Naming Your Personal Training Business

So you’ve set your mind on putting up a personal training business. You know what you want and who you want to help. You already found a perfect location for your gym. You have the equipment and the expertise to make your business succeed.

But here comes the tricky part: naming your personal training business.

It may not occur to you immediately but your business name can make or break your business altogether. For example, you may regret naming it Steel Belles if you’re also looking to attract male clients.

Actually, naming your business or any business for that matter is not an exact science. But let me throw in a few suggestions that you might want to try out.

If you are fairly popular in your local fitness circles, then by all means, use your own name for your business. The great thing about this is that people already have an idea of your training method and you have your name to back your business up. The only downside here is that you actually need to be popular to be able to pull it off.

Now if you decide not to use your name but something else for your business, here are other suggestions. First, begin to define who your target market is. Remember the Steel Belles example a while ago? That’s really a bad idea if you’re targeting both sexes – worse if you’re targeting men.

If you’re targeting hardcore athletes, then you may consider hardcore-sounding names. The key here is to make your business name evocative enough to give people an idea of the kind of training they should expect from you. Be familiar with your market’s jargon and see if you can get ideas for names there.

Although you should make your business name descriptive, make short and sweet. Short names are easy to remember so if you can pull a short name off, do it.

However, keep in mind to make your business name flexible enough just in case you expand or change your services later on. It’s much easier to expand your operations than change your name especially if your business name is already popular. But if you can’t do this, you might be better off putting up a separate business altogether with a different business name. Help your new business gain some leverage by associating it with the more established one.

But don’t be stressed, though. Naming your business is like naming your baby – it can be fun, just make sure you don’t regret coming up with that name later on. Make a list of all the possible names you have. Once you have come up with an exhaustive list, ask your friends and colleagues for their opinions.

To sum it up, feel free to use your name as your brand name if you’re a popular figure in your area. People will remember your business easier that way. But if you can’t try finding a name that’s descriptive, easy to remember and flexible.
