Tips on Running a Personal Training Business

If you need advice on how to run a personal training business, then I can easily sum it up for you. Running this kind of business is a combination of what you already have and what you can still acquire through learning. That’s pretty short, I know, but that’s really the sum of the personal training business or any business for that matter.

Now let me explain that further. Let’s begin with the things that you already have. First of all, if you want to be in the personal training business, I would assume that you love health and fitness. Why? Because why would you be in this business in the first place if this isn’t something you care about?

Aside from that, since you love health and fitness, you also love telling people how they can achieve those things themselves – sometimes to the point of being preachy. You truly love helping people stay fit and healthy, and you work hard to help them achieve their fitness goals.

Of course, this business isn’t a one way road. You also should have the ability to listen to your clients. Find out what they’re concerned about, what they want to achieve with their workouts, etc. That’s the only way you can formulate an effective strategy to help them achieve their fitness goals. Otherwise, you’ll end up writing a one-size-fits-all strategy that may not work for them.

You also must be a people person. You’re interacting with people everyday, so I suppose you’re not afraid of talking to them and asking them questions. And that doesn’t end with your clients. If you want to gain a greater network of friends and colleagues in this business, you shouldn’t be afraid to make friends with these people.

We now move to the things that you may not be skilled with right now but you can acquire through learning. Let’s begin with the business skills. Sure, you may be passionate about fitness and health, but running a business may not be your forte. You may be clueless about getting clients, networking and marketing but you shouldn’t worry.

You can buy books about marketing and other business related stuff, but if you really want to learn as much as you can quickly, then I suggest you take courses from schools or mentors. Taking courses of course costs a lot of money but the knowledge you will acquire will help offset those costs as you start earning a lot of money. Keep in mind that education is an investment and not a cost.

You should also learn marketing. Marketing is very important even at the early stages of your business. That’s because marketing helps spread the word out about your business, it helps you learn how to handle your clients and more. Again, books can help you with the basics, but taking courses will definitely fast track your learning.

Although I mentioned earlier that there are qualities that you should have as a personal trainer, not everyone of course will be blessed with all those qualities I mentioned. So if you’re not a people person, for example, keep on making an effort to be one. After all, the changes you make about yourself will only be for the better of your business.
