What You can Learn from Successful Personal Trainers

A Successful Personal Trainers Guest Post by Joe T.

The deeper you study the business of personal training, the more familiar you will be to the names of some of the most successful personal trainers in the business. And you will then ask yourself why these people are successful. Are they marketing wizards? Are they dedicated personal trainers? I’ll tell you what I think their ingredients for success are.

At the top of the list, I think, is that these trainers truly care for their clients. Surely, they also want to make a decent income and a successful business, but having happy clients is the key to longevity and success in personal training.

If you really care about the welfare of your clients, you will devote much of your time finding ways how you can help them achieve their fitness goals. You take the time to listen to them, to see what frustrates them and be there to pat their backs when they achieve a certain goal or milestone.

Your clients will see and appreciate the little things that you do for them. And by doing these things, you convert them into loyal clients. You can’t beat having loyal clients. They are the ones who will stick with you through the different phases your business will go through, and they are the ones who will gladly spread the word about the great job that you do. So by all means, keep your loyal clients happy.

Another thing that makes these trainers successful is their understanding that they are also running a business. With that in mind, they continually develop strategies to streamline how their business works, how to keep the business earning more and minimizing money wasted.

Trainers who understand that they are running a business don’t necessarily compete on price but on the value that they can deliver to their clients. Wonder how some trainers can demand hundreds of dollars per hour on a session? It’s the value that they deliver with each session.

And since these trainers understand that they are running a business, they market aggressively. One pitfall that a lot of business owners fall into is their failure to appreciate the fact they must market their business continually – even if they already have a good number of clients.

This is even more important if you’re planning to expand your business eventually. However, keep with your marketing efforts no matter what phase you are in your business. Hubris or laziness will surely kill your business off in the long run.

Finally, successful trainers are tireless learners. Everyday, people come up with better ways to run the business and help train people better. So if you don’t want to risk extinction, keep your business and your methods up-to-date.

So you see, being successful in the personal training business is a mix of business savvy and the love of you do. Business savvy enables you to find the best way to run your business and market it, and the love of what you do keeps your desire to help people burning throughout the lifetime of your business. And because things are always changing in the world of fitness, these trainers keep their knowledge up-to-date to keep them up with the trends.

  1. Hi Joe,

Great post!! I love the first thing you said about that they really care about their clients. I tend to think that I really love my clients. Love wants what is best for the object of it's affection, love wants them to be happy. The client is happiest when we really care for them. They know it. Are you paying attention to them or talking about the latest NBA game.

Somewhat of a similar theme is that I believe that the trainer has to love/enjoy helping them. It can't be a duty. "If they love what they do then they won't have to work a day in their life." You can quote me on that.
