Personal Training Insurance Basics

A Personal Training Insurance Guest Post by J. Brown

As a personal trainer your focus is on your business, the success of your clients and their health and safety, but every now and then despite your best efforts something goes wrong, and you need to make sure that you have personal training insurance to cover you so you don't get slammed with medical bills or a lawsuit.

Now, a lot of personal training insurance programs require that you be certified before they will sell you insurance.  Obviously they have an interest in not insuring some "trainer" who knows nothing and is causing a bunch of injuries so they are limiting their liability by only insuring trainers with certain certifications.  Most of you already have those certifications, but if you don't and you need personal training insurance, there are a few fitness insurance companies out there who will sell your insurance without a certificate.

Things you'll want to consider when purchasing a personal training insurance policy is where you are covered.  Is it just for a gym facility, a specific gym facility?  In home?  Outside at a park?  Check with your personal trainer insurance company to confirm that you are covered everywhere you are training

Also know the insurance options you will need.  There are a lot of different coverage options for you to choose from and you want to make sure your personal trainer insurance policy covers a broad range of issues in case something comes up.  You can be as careful as possible, but you can't always watch what everyone else is doing, so you need to protect yourself and make sure to get enough personal training insurance.

Coverages you should consider are ones that protect you from:

  • Claims by clients who injured themselves
  • Injuries you may suffer while working
  • Sexual harassment law suits
  • Law suits based on a product or supplement that you sold to a client

Don't skimp on your insurance either, make sure that your insurance limits are high enough or you'll still end up carrying the brunt of a claim.  Personal injury claims can be SUPER HIGH so check out the average amount that the winner of a personal injury suit against a trainer in your area would receive, and keep that in mind when purchasing your insurance.  It's not too hard to find these statistics, and your personal trainer insurance company can help you with that as well.  You may also want to consult an attorney to ensure that you are fully protected and your personal training insurance coverage is adequate for your business.

You always need to consider ways to protect and improve your business, and besides personal training insurance you will also want to think about other ways that your business could be improved. Are you signing up and billing your clients as efficiently as possible?  Is your marketing targeted so that you're not wasting your money on ads that aren't effective or reaching your audience?  If so be sure to check out the rest of this site for tips on how to improve your business and protect your freedom so you aren't spending every hour of the day slaving away to make money.
