Lisa Nichols Interview - Create the business and life you want
Here's an interview I did with Lisa Nichols, you may know her from the DVD "The Secret" or seen her on Oprah. She explains how to reach your business goals while enjoying the journey and helping as many people as possible in the process. Enjoy…

Chris McCombs (CM): I’m here with Lisa Nichols. Lisa, what is it that you do?
Lisa Nichols (LN): I am an inspirational speaker and transformation coach - life coach. And I provide experiential learning workshops for adults and teens in the areas of personal management, personal and professional development. I’m more like an entrepreneur in the area of creating more successful lives, both personally and professionally.
CM: What is the law of attraction?
LN: The law of attraction, summarized, really simply says, what we think about we bring about. What our lives physical manifestation, and the conversation that’s going on in our head, in that we have the ability to draw to us what we want and what we don’t want simply by our thoughts. And that the universe is working in cooperation with us, in that, as we place an order through our thoughts, the universe begins to fulfill that order.
CM: How important are our thoughts when it comes to the results we are getting in our lives?
LN: Our thoughts are the beginning. Our thoughts are the seeds that are planted that determine what’s next. Our thoughts are extremely important. They are critical. They are crucial. They are the primary, the main ingredient, in everything that’s created in our lives. Our thoughts begin our experiences. And experience in our lives, the way that we deal with the experience, begins with our thoughts in relationship to the experience.
CM: How important is the way we feel when it comes to the results we are getting in our lives?
LN: Our feelings are extremely important because our feelings are how our experiences are affecting us. Our feelings either have a relation to the things that are happening in our lives, or the things that have happened in the past in our lives. Our experience becomes the – our feelings become the experience that we have. Let me give you a clearer example. If something makes us sad, or something painful happens to us, and we go back and think about that again, and we have that same feeling again, we virtually just re-experienced that painful situation. On the flip side of that, we have something absolutely amazing happening in our lives and we go back and we re-visit that thought, we re-visit that experience, and we have that amazing feeling again, we literally are creating a great feeling that can be projected forward into another moment. So, our feelings really become a key part of our life experience, and our navigational system for what we call the quality of our lives.
Let me just summarize it like this, if you have a often bad feelings, or you feel bad enough, you would say that your life was summarized to be very poorly. Flip side of that, if you feel good often, awesome all the time, 90 percent of the time you’re feeling good, you’re feeling excited, you will find the quality of your life as being excited and a good life. So your feelings really are the way in which you measure the quality of your life.
CM: How can a fitness trainer use the law of attraction to grow his or her business?
LN: Oh, my gosh. Fitness trainers can use the law of attraction to grow his or her business in many, many ways. I’ll just give you a few. Number one, visualize what it looks like with the pot of gold in your favor, in your possession. Not a physical pot of gold, but what would that look like in terms of the number of clients that you have. Begin to visualize those clients completely. Don’t visualize [interruption beep] what your working toward, visualize what the outcome looks like. So if your client looks like, I want 15 physical clients and 25 online clients, and clients that are also just coached intellectually, they’re not physically coached, they’re intellectually coached about management and lifestyle, what would that look like? What would those client numbers look like? A fitness trainer can [interruption sound] attraction as far as their business to also state, and to help their clients visualize because normally the client – and I’m a client to a fitness trainer. I’m not a fitness trainer, never have been. I have a great respect for them because they have helped me to really take back control of my life.
However, I know one of the key things that was really important to me was, the fitness trainer in my life asked me to speak about what did it look like and, more importantly, what did it feel like for me to be at my optimum health. Not my ideal weight, because that’s just a visual thing, but my optimum health, creating a feeling for me. So, my fitness trainer got me so attached and so committed to staying inside the program because she had called me to visit the feeling that came with being in optimum health. And I felt joy, I felt excitement, I felt peace, I felt empowered, and I wanted to really live that. So, my motivation was much stronger. So, they can use that in visualizing, vision board with their clients, having their clients really create a visual picture of what they’re wanting in their lives. One other way that a fitness trainer can utilize the law of attraction to expand their business is to really speak to other trainers with a level of confidence and a level of [indistinct]. A lot of times in the field of personal training, what it seems to me – and again, I’m a consumer – but it seems like the industry goes up and down because people buy the commitment for a period of time, and then they lose the commitment. I would say that the law of attraction can support a fitness trainer to grow their business by engaging clients in such a manner that their longevity lasts longer, and also re-engaging old clients and keeping clients longer, and [indistinct] term will be a bit shorter, by using the law of attraction with clients. I would actually stand on a different level and have more clients, as a part of their training, watch the secret, live the secret, and then apply the secret inside of their health.
CM: What are some other tools, like visualization and things like that, that trainers can use to get into the habit of thinking thoughts that will serve them better in their vision?
LN: I always say – some other tools they can use – I always recommend to do a visioning board. I’m a big believer of the visioning board, and having a visioning board, and making a visioning board a part of their day. There’s certain things we do every day. We brush our teeth, we wash our face, we take a shower. I would think that of a visioning board for a minimum of five minutes, and really claim it and see it and believe it. Ask for it, and believe it’s going to come, and be willing to receive it. I would also recommend that trainers begin to speak to the results they create in the world. Not to what they do. That’s a big distinction that people are still learning, in that, I’m not a trainer, but what I do is I support people in creating healthy lifestyles that they choose and that they’ve been looking for. So, instead of just saying, “I’m a trainer,” it’s what’s the result of what you’re creating, beginning with the end in mind. Starting with the end and [indistinct]. You know what you create, so I will begin to become a stronger marketing tool for myself by sticking to the results.
My trainer can say that I help people find joy through healthy living and weight management, or healthy lifestyle, because when I met her I was much heavier than I am now, and much less happy. Through her training and her guidance, I’ve now managed my healthy lifestyle. My weight and my challenges, any physical challenges, don’t matter to me. So, I would say begin to speak with the end in mind on what you create in the world. I think as a trainer, you’re far more than a trainer, and to the consumer ear, hearing the word “trainer” doesn’t necessarily excite or motivate us. We know what it does, as much as if you said, “What I am is, I’m an instructor that becomes an avenue for individuals to maximize their life through their health, weight management and healthy lifestyles. Whatever that looks like. Whatever those things are, that’s what I do. And I do it by training them physically.”
CN: Let’s say a personal trainer has not had a lot of success in the past and has not really been able to getting into the feeing place of knowing his or her desired business outcome will come true. What would you suggest?
LN: Well, when you look at the secret and you look at the law of attraction, you have to absolutely move to a place where your past is no longer paying for your future. I’m sorry, where your future is no longer paying for your past. So, if there’s a trainer that hasn’t had a lot of success in the past, then number one, I would say, what are you thinking about, because thoughts have a lot to do with the reality that’s coming up and what’s being chased. So, again, you have to shift your thinking to want something better. Then the second part, the first part is easier than the second part, the second part is the challenge to believe that you have the right to receive something better. Then, expect something better. Then, take action to create something better. So find out what you’re doing that’s not supporting you and then begin to shift to make something else happen.
CM: The practice of being of service is a paramount part of many philosophies of teaching, yet it is sometimes overlooked by many law of attraction teachers. I just talked to a dear friend a few days ago, who happens to be a fitness trainer, by the way. This guy has been in the law of attraction for many years, yet seems to be getting little in the way of desired results and he’s allowed himself to slip into a state of depression. One thing that seemed apparent to me is that he’s not practicing being of service in his life. Can you tell us how law of attraction and being of service can relate to each other and where we can bridge a gap between the two?
LN: Well, that is a needy question, and it’s a good question, and a necessary question. Law of attraction is saying what we think about, we bring about. Service says that our life is a value as we create value in the lives of others. So, when we look at connecting both of those, that I know that I’m for my greatest good when I’m one, expecting the best through the law of attraction to come into my life, and two, I’m positioning myself to be a blessing, to be an instrument, and to be a tool for others to utilize. So, I’ve created a life of service. My life is of service. I create and produce emotional healing and emotional healthiness for individuals, and through servicing them, I expect for the universe to deliver to me exactly what I need because I’m in alignment by one, doing well while doing good. Those are very close. They’re not far apart at all.
The better we do at serving and supporting others, the better we’re provided lifestyles as well. However, people often see one or two extremes, either has to be all about me serving me so that I can serve others, or it has to be all about me serving others at the cost of me serving myself. Well, no, there’s a balance between the two. When we get to say that I’m going to fill my tank up and expect the best so that I can serve people from a full tank, as a matter of fact, I can serve people from my overflow. I think that’s the magic. We speak of your friend wanting to figure out how and where’s the gap between service and law of attraction, please know that law of attraction says you have the right to request from the universe anything you want. However, the universe is also a place that requires seeds to be planted in it so that it can keep giving back to you and giving back to others. So, it’s a cyclical process. “To whom much is given, much is expected,” that’s a verse from the Bible, and to expect that way, that the more I am blessed the more I am expected to be a blessing unto others, to live the example of the law of attraction. Expecting it to come into my space even before it’s alive. I think one of the things I would recommend for your friend is to find out where could I be more active, because the antidote for despair is to be in action.
Often, when something’s uncomfortable, when it’s not working, normally we could be in a lot of thought about it, or we could be in a conversation about it, but normally there isn’t enough action being applied to it. That doesn’t mean that there isn’t some action, but if it’s painful or uncomfortable, normally there isn’t enough action. And I understand that prior to action you need direction, and so, I would say seek that first, but action is imperative in order for the discomfort to be released. More action, or a different form of question. I want to make sure, Chris, that I apply that question. I’m back inside a more private environment now. I want to make sure that there’s a piece of that you want me to speak more on, because that was a hefty question. I want to make sure I can address it, because it seems like that one can really serve your peers that are listening to this interview, or read it, or whatever format will come out, so I want to make sure that there’s part of that question that you want to re-ask because I may have answered one part, but you want me to answer another part, then please let me know.
CM: Actually, that’s a very complete answer, and a great answer by the way. Do you have any tips for anyone new to this kind of stuff?
LN: Yes. First realize that – don’t flip in and out of believing it. Either believe it, or don’t. Number one. Either you believe it, and hold on to it, and live it, or say I’m not ready for it, but really be honest with yourself on where you are because being in limbo is more uncomfortable than having decided something doesn’t work for you. So, one, make a decision on if you truly believe in the law of attraction, and when you choose that you believe in the law of attraction then don’t beat yourself up. Take off the gloves. Don’t beat yourself up with the reality that you’ve created a lot of the results in your life, including the uncomfortable ones that you have thought other people were to blame for, when you really learn that you had a huge part to play in that. Be kind. Be loving. Be encouraging to yourself. Love yourself through every single decision you’ve ever made. They were all necessary, they were all okay, and they all got you to this point. So be loving, be encouraging. Celebrate yourself for every single decision, at every single level, and every single result that you’ve created and that you’ve made that have helped your life, or simply taught you lessons. So, that’s the second thing I would say.
And the third thing I would say is to begin to design your life as if you were an architect designing a new building. Literally design what you want it to look like. Now, there’s some things in the universe that will simply happen that you had no idea about. However, the things that you can design – because what you’ll do is you’ll begin to design the direction of your life. You’ll begin to design the colors and the backdrops that you want to see life with. Are you seeing life through a bright yellow lense? Are you seeing life through a magenta dark lense? Begin to design the way you see it, because you have the power to do just that, and to create what the next season look like in your life. So, I would say, begin to operate inside of it. Begin to be more sensitive and watch how your thoughts manifest so you can become an unwavering believer.

CM: That’s great. Is there anything else you would like in a byline, Lisa? Any other info or anything?
LN: Well, one of the things I want to say before I do a byline, any commercial for what I’m doing, is I want to invite the people that are in your community to begin each day finding how they can set their champion free. They can unleash a little more of the champion in themselves. My life today is huge. I lived the life I love, and I love the life I live. And I simply – I got this way by simply allowing a little bit of my champion to play each day.
And it didn’t happen in one great swoop. It happened in bit sized, palatable, digestible moments, but I’d love to preach to your community to take in that way. To not try to digest all of it, but to take the parts that’s palatable, chewable, and digest that, then take on a little more. I am committed to growth. I would for you to – online we have a product called “When You’re Ready for the Real Truth,” and that product is very personal to me. It’s the work that I had to do in the dark of the night in order to show up in the middle of the day as powerfully as I’m able to do now. It was the way that I had to fill my tank up first so that I can come out and help and support others by helping them fill their tank up. So, I have tons of product online, but “Ready for the Real Truth” is the most personal piece of work I’ve ever done, most candid and most authentic, I believe, and me just sharing Lisa and her journey. So, if there’s some one inside that, like your friend, that really touched my heart what you said that you’re a man that feels like, look, I’m applying all of this and it doesn’t work and feels like [indistinct] or the other, and if I apply one, it’s hard to reach the other, and I totally understand that journey. “Ready for the Real Truth” talks about me fighting to get through that place as well. I’m not a stranger to depression. I’m not a stranger to sadness. I’m not a stranger to feeling hopeless and feeling out of control. I’m not a stranger to any of that. I’ve simply done some things and applied some techniques to help me get through those moments, and then I’ve developed some muscles so when I know I’m slipping into that place, or I’m visiting that thought, I’ve developed some muscles so I can immediately fling that back to the place of power.
But the distance between your community and me is not huge, it’s simply some tweaks and some muscle that I’ve developed. I think that I have a lot of products, but “Ready for the Real Truth” really depicts the journey, and some of the other products depict some other things, but that’s what I would first recommend to your friend, and then from there.
