Oh Yeah, Well I'm a Movie Star

carey_coleman.jpgAs human beings, we all naturally crave attention.

I remember early one morning; I was training two women in their mid-twenties.

One of them starts to show me some bruises on her shoulder that she got because her boyfriend had beat her up over the weekend.  Kind of sad, it's now 5 years later and I bet she's still with the guy.

As soon as she starts telling me this sad story, the other one jumps in about how she is a porn star and specializes in lesbian and medical fetish porn, and starts telling me all about her career, the highlights of it, the horrors of it, the nasty things she had to do to get where she's at. the name of her website and how she's been doing S&M films as well but hopes to break out of that niche because she doesn't want to get typecast.

Keep in mind I had no idea this client of mine did porn until that moment, she was a loan officer as far as I knew. She did show up drunk to a few workouts and I had to send her on her way, but as far as I was concerned, she was a good old stereotypical Orange County alcoholic loan officer.

While she's telling me about the ups and downs of her porn career, the first girl is telling me how bad she has it getting beat up by her boyfriend all the time and how she always has bruises and is scared to call the cops on him because if she does, she'll pay for it.

They we're literally going back and forth trying to one up each other to get my attention… It was amazing to me to see these two women I'm training both trying to get attention for their horror stories and drama.

That's when it hit me. Most people really want attention, they want to be seen and heard. That's why people want to get into incredible shape, they want to be noticed and appreciated. And many people, if they can't get attention in a positive way, they'll get it in a negative way… as long as SOMEONE is paying attention to them… even if it's their under-slept personal trainer at six in the morning.dangerous_attention_pill.jpg

Use the knowledge of peoples need for attention in your marketing and sales pitches.

Honestly, if you're a personal trainer I doubt many people are coming to you because they want to be healthier, there's a few, but I bet the majority of the women I trained would take a pill if that pill would make them look hot tomorrow, even if I told them that pill would kill them in 10 years. If they know tomorrow all eyes will be on them in their sklinny jeans, they happily except the fatal consequences without as much as a second thought, just to get some attention.

If you're niche is fat loss and/or muscle toning, use this knowledge in the way you speak to your prospects in your marketing, and you'll be speaking to something that will tap into a deep emotional part of their being.
