Three Fitness Presentations Guaranteed to Fill Your Boot Camps
Guest Post by BJ Gaddour
Here's another guest post by the Boot Camp Guru himself BJ Gaddour…
BJ DEFINITELY knows a thing or two about building mega-successful fitness boot camps and I'm stoked to have him as a contributor… check out some of his strategies…
I'm lucky to know some of the very best business minds in the fitness industry.
One guy that I can't seem to get enough advice from is Jim Labadie.
I'll never forget a statement he made during one of our Boot Camp Blueprint calls, a statement that changed the way I have approached marketing fitness boot camps forever:
"If you train groups, then you ought to sell to groups by offering free public speaking engagements."
This is really such a simple concept, but it's one that most fitness professionals never seem to take to heart.
Why you ask?
Because trainers are either:
a.) Scared Shitless to speak to large groups
AND/OR
b.) Too lazy to do the hustling necessary to land continual speaking engagements
Well, if you ever want to make it big with boot camps (or in the fitness industry in general), then you are just going to have to break out of your comfort zone and build yourself into an engaging and dynamic presenter.
You don't have to be a poet- but you do have to be someone who displays a unique passion for special knowledge that is of high demand to a large number of people.
Land at least 2 speaking engagements per month.
It's really not as hard as you think when you regularly use the following tried and proven strategies:
How To Book Endless Speaking Engagements:
1.) Contact local businesses to offer free lunch and learns
2.) Contact local networking groups, civic organizations, affinity groups
3.) Host live events- special occasion or otherwise
4.) Ask your personal network and client base for speaking opportunities and provide them with some referral reward incentives for doing so
So you now know to how to land a speaking engagement if you didn't already, but what the hell are you going to talk about once you get there?
Believe it or not, the answer can be found in literally every fitness boot camp workout that you have ever run.
Think about it- fitness is a really high-energy field and trainers are high-energy people that can't really fathom sitting down and listening to some schmuck talk for 30-45+ minutes about their topic of choice.
And frankly, nobody really enjoys sitting down listening to anybody talk for an extended period of time… it's friggin' boring!
Since fitness boot camp instructors are typically in their element when demonstrating unique exercises or sample workouts and then motivating the hell out of people (just like they do at boot camp), this is exactly what they need to make the focus of their fitness presentations.
We refer to it as an "active fitness presentation" and we always employ at least one short 4-5 minute sample workout in all of our speaking engagements to break the ice and provide a unique and entertaining experience for the audience that makes them want more.
It's what we do best and it's what strangers respond to best- a win-win for everyone.
Now, I am even going to go one step further and share with you our very own top 3 fitness presentation topics that drive more leads into our boot camps than a special guest appearance by Richard Grieco would.

Richard Greco LOVES When Boot Camp Instructors Land Public Speaking Engagements
Fitness Boot Camp Presentation #1- The Lies and Myths of Fat loss
This is the only presentation we offer that is more lecture based using power point. The fact is that it's always good to have at least one more formal presentation in your arsenal to come off as the consummate professional. In addition, some audiences or venues are more suited to this format. However, we still incorporate a mini-workout at some point during the presentation.
Bottom line- tell them everything they are doing wrong when it comes to losing body fat, show them that you have all the answers they are looking for, and then provide them with a limited-time call to action to work you NOW!
So we start by shitting on aerobic training, the food pyramid, abs infomercials, and all of the other bullshit out there.
Then we explain how our program works via interval training and metabolic transformation and we SHOW the crazy results our clients get via visual testimonials like before and after pictures and video submissions.
Then we do a brief sample interval training workout using a 4-minute Workout Muse 20-10 Tabatas interval training mp3 soundtrack (see 4-minute fat loss at work below for more info) that rocks the house!
I press play, the music tells them exactly what to do as I coach them, and 4 minutes later people are literally feeling the fat-melting power of our program.

Fitness Boot Camp Presentation #2- 4-Minute Fat Loss at Work
This presentation is short and to the point and works great for lunch and learn at local companies.
It's the perfect 20-30 minute quick hitter to get people excited about your program.
Essentially, we start explaining the benefits of interval training and body weight based exercises. We go on further explaining that even if you only have 5 minutes a day per workout you can still make some positive changes with the right protocol.
And then, after a brief warm-up, we make the group do a sample 4-minute Tabatas workout to better explain what we mean. Trust me, though I am biased as the co-creator of a fitness music and media production company, the right workout music will take your presentation to the next level!
I crank the Workout Muse Tabatas soundtrack and we go to work with body weight strength, core, and cardio exercises like stationary running, push-ups, squats, lunges, mountain climbers, front pillars, etc.
At the end of the workout, while every body is huffing and puffing and feeling the adrenaline rush, we explain that their metabolisms will be elevated for up to 48 hours after this workout that involved nothing but their body weight, all-out effort, and a 4-minute investment of their time.
Then we raffle out 1-3 one-month boot camp giveaways (after obtaining all of their contact info before the start of the workout) and hand out a bunch of free trial giveaways to everybody else.
Fitness Boot Camp Presentation #3- The Anti-Crunch 6-Pack Abs Blueprint
ABS.
ABS.
ABS.
Give them what they want baby!
But tell them exactly why doing hundreds of crunches and sit-ups per day won't get the job done.
I know, as crazy as it sounds, some idiots still believe spot reduction works!
So show them a host of crunch-less abs exercises that will make them feel their gut for days (in a good way) with a brief 5-minute total body core circuit.
Below is a sample 50-10 five-exercise body weight core circuit template that we have used to rave reviews time and time again:
- Exercise#1- Front Pillar Variation
- Exercise#2- Left Side Pillar Variation
- Exercise#3- Right Side Pillar Variation
- Exercise#4- Upper Body Twist Variation
- Exercise#5- Knee-In Variation
Obviously, the exercise combinations are endless, but that's not the point!
Show them how to train for 6-pack abs the right way, make them feel the difference and get them wanting more, and let them know you have the rapid fat loss nutrition plans necessary to remove the fat covering their abs.
Finish by raffling out 1-3 one-month boot camp giveaways (after obtaining all of their contact info before the start of the workout) and hand out a bunch of free trial giveaways to everybody else.
Continual use of these 3 high-demand public speaking topics will generate just as many, if not more, leads for your boot camps than any multi-thousand dollar paid advertising campaign could.
So, it's time to kill it with fitness presentations baby
Crank it!

Hi BJ
Nice marketing examples, but I have a question related to EPOC.
You wrote: "we explain that their metabolisms will be elevated for up to 48 hours after this workout that involved nothing but their body weight, all-out effort, and a 4-minute investment of their time."
My understanding of EPOC is that it requires both intensity (you got that covered) and *duration*. If you say "up to 48 hours" then I'd expect at least a few people to get 48 hours, while most get a lot less. Do you really have some clients who get this effect for 48 hours using only a 4 minute duration? That really surprises me!
I am just curious, cos I read all about this recently, and what you are saying doesn't jive with everything else I read.
Are you perhaps using the old marketing trick of presenting extreme results as "to be expected" or do you have a little fine print that says "individual results may vary"?
Cheers,
Tim Graham

Hey BJ,
Great post. I've been up in front of a classroom/lunchroom many times and often forget how powerful music can be. Thanks for the tips.
Chris - great guest bloggers…keep the content coming….not that we don't want to hear from you, too!

If you are timid or first time presenter..you would obviously start with a smaller group. I did my first time with my current bootcamp clients it was good practice..then moved on to other small groups..at chiropractors seminar, local college summer classes, small group of high school teachers..and being a person who is shy initially this helped.
Hey BJ,
I agree with Tim Graham from Australia. To say people will experience EPOC for the next 48 hours after a 4 minute circuit is flat out misleading. You have a good thing going. Don't fall into the tramp that many fit pros do and make outrageous claims to just get people to buy in.
It is a big problem in our industry not only with trainers but also with "Fitness Internet Marketing Guru's"and other so-called fitness experts out there trying to make a quick buck off of our fellow peers and consumers.
No knock on your Chris. You keep it real.
Honesty is the best policy!
Public Speaking is awesome man. I love doing these lunch&learns (and I heard about them through Jim Labadie as well).
I can see how many are afraid of it, but once you have it down you can be the #1 Alpha-Male in any Social Setting.
Hey Guys,
The way we run our full tabata boot camp workouts, there are 4 different 5-minute stations that last for 20 minutes total..
and yes, there is a metabolic elevation for 24-48 hours after this without a doubt, I have the real world results to prove it
I apologize for the confusion, but I assure you that my intentions are not to be misleading
in addition, I also believe it is possible to feel some afterburn 1-2 days from a 4-minute workout of this kind with the right intensity at advanced fitness levels, that's been my experience
crank it!
BJ
Great Info!!
I have thought about doing lunch and learns but am unsure how to find them. Any advice other than toastmasters, guys?
BJ -
Great post man!!!
Hell of a lot of content here for anyone to plug and play right now.
See you in Philly in a couple of days!
Chris - Not sure if I told you yet but I love the blog over-haul.

hey BJ
Thanks for replying.
You did write this: "we explain that their metabolisms will be elevated for up to 48 hours after this workout that involved nothing but their body weight, all-out effort, and a 4-minute investment of their time."
While I am sure it is not intentionally misleading… it is.
First you are actually talking about a 20 minute workout not a 4 minute workout (and I would still question the duration at 20 mins).
Second you are talking about advanced (conditioned) clients who are able to work at the required intensity to get EPOC benefits. So the marketing message should be very clear that you are pitching to advanced individuals, not beginners.
I do not doubt that you may have seen a certain result before, but taking isolated, extreme cases and presenting them as possible for general population is just plain sloppy.
It may be possible to get new clients and make six figures this way, but I think that it will leave a trail of ex-clients whose expectations were unfairly raised and then dashed. For me, that is not a sustainable business model.
Cheers,
Tim
I gotta throw in my 2 cents here.
Yes, EPOC happens from short workouts. Some of my best sessions are workouts that last 10 minutes - 15 mins max and I'm smashed need the next 5 minutes to sit down and just recover.
Intensity is the key to the short workouts. You won't get EPOC from doing crunches and arm curls for 10 minutes.
Tim, mate you've got a choice - run with BJ's info and see results with your biz or continue to argue about what works and what doesn't with short workouts.
Guess what I'm doing now - looking into speaking gigs.
cheers BJ for another great post.
BJ great post once again. I really think correcting the myths in fitness and conditioning is essential. A lot of times we can say what is wrong with the industry but if we can also give people concrete ways to change it, they will respond much better to our programs. Once they see that it's all about efficiency they are sold!
Thanks again.
You are sooooooooooo AWESOME! I am going to send out a mass mail to all of my clients and ask to do presentations at their companies-I am super excited I love to use music in my boot camps and I will use it for my presentations as well!
