Hey Chris,
Love the video post. With a face like your you should do video more often….besides you communicate well with your voice and mannerisms.
I love this tactic. It's like picking chics up at the mall in high school to see who could get the most numbers….lol
I try to talk to everyone in NYC and its easy with women especially since I do boot camps.
PEople said I talked to much as a kid now my mouth is my best asset.
IT is about a numbers game most people FLAKE on FREE training but it is a number game.
Due to my BIG MOUTH I get free drinks at some great NYC restaurants, cigars from business owners, and discounts on lingerie for the wife.
I love relationships and I love building them.
I need to do more of this on my BLOG but I am really trying to kill it offline.
Thanks for this video Chris and hope to see more video from you.
Very cool site and great video
Check this out, The Ultimate Anti Health Plan http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2lrRYbUHuso Makes you think. What do you think?
I've been having trouble getting people to commit to "FREE" training. I started looking for "Billboard people" a few months back when Steve Hochman made his video series. Who would have thought that finding people who would be interested in training for FREE would be so damn hard! I've been sending out text messages to everyone I know and I sent out emails to everyone I know with my free training offer and I posted ads on Craig's list as well as backpage and on Meetup. I got about 50 qualified responses. Then I had my "Orientation Meeting" and only 5 people showed up. This was a major bummer so I went through the whole process again and got the EXACT same results. So at this second "orientation" meeting I then decided to make these "Free" workouts conditional. Condition 1 is that these people must try to get me a referral, just like Steve suggested. Condition 2, I told everyone that they must purchase one of my journals and an access code to an online nutrition program. Which totals just $49. I sold 10 of these and now have a total of 15 people in my boot camp. At least I know that the people who made this small purchase are somewhat more committed. Now I'm going to take this next step our suggesting as well and I'm about to call everyone in my phone book until I get 20 more people. I coudl care less what people think of me! Hell I won't quit until I have 50 people paying me full price…DAMN IT! For all the work it takes to convince people to come and train for FREE I should be getting paid for something!
Great advice.
Before I left my slave job at a big commercial 24 hour club, I saw a trainer there make a commitment to talking (listening) to 20 people a day on the workout floor.
Believe it or not, he set a record for personal training sales in what is normally one of the slowest months of the entire year. And that was just talking to people on the workout floor.
Crazy I tell you.
BTW: This is my first comment on your blog.
I love it.
All of it.
Thanks for all the awesome stuff you put out there.
BTW: Nii, how do you find all the time to do anything besides read and comment on these and other awesome blog posts?
I see you everywhere I go and I'm in Hawaii!
Chris,
I love this mate. It is an awsome idea and one we could definately do here in Canberra Australia. We run many groups weekly, around 300-400 people a week and we could just drop these people into our existing Bootcamp programs at no extra cost to us. We will start tomorrow. It is late at night here and only the wife to talk to and she already trains.
Love it….
I'm getting more aware that offline is the way to go and an area that we all can forget about!
Sure – you need a good website, blog and great SEO to be seen online and get the business there but when I worked in a gym all I did was approach people and give them free advice and sessions and bang….in a month or two I was as busy as I needed to be.
Just because I'm my own boss now shouldn't make it any different and I've used stuff like this with some success and in the bootcamps it looks like its really working!!!!!
I think it wa Adam that said it best about using your best asset…yourself and get out there and see people. Spending stacks of time in front of the PC ain't gonna get you seen.
Thanks Chris – I'm gonna take it a step further!
Oh and you get the right people and the thanks you get back off them is unbelievable. Treat them well and they will reward you back in doubles!
Hey Chris….Great vid!
this "old" school strategy IS and always will be THE best way to get clients and build relationships. Thanks for reminding us of how powerful this is!
In today's day of distractions and interruptions and technology…sometimes people forget the power of the telephone and 1 on 1 contact….
We all need to get some kahunas….talk to more people…and realize every "no" is 1 step closer to the "yes". I bet less than 5% of the people who watch this vid will use this strategy. (I will personally delegate it to my manager and team with accounatbility and tracking tools:-)
Feel the fear and do it anyway…
Borat quote – Niiiice!
Hey Great Video,
This is certainly something any trainer can do. I love the video blog post can see your passion.
Right Got to go got 20 people to talk to .
John
Hey Chris ,
Great Video , Sure alll trainers can use this tip . Loved the video Blog post .
Got to go got 20 people to talk to .
John
Hey Chris Thanks for that.
I was just putting it out there for debate with everyone that Is getting human billboards atm.
First of all I started out with the Ill train you for free if you help me get referalls.
That has worked ok, I have got a handful of people from that.
I am now trying a differnt approach saying that I am sponsoring people, leaving them a sheet of paper for them with pics etc. and getting their email and coming back a week later. Started that today and have 13 email addresses. I will let you know how that goes & **travis going strong mate, thanks for the call bro!!
Just putting it out there to all the trainers that have been getting billboards for a bit of a debate
What has worked the best, what has worked the worst etc. maybe steve you could help me out on this considering you are the human billboard miestro
I am looking to track results for the best converting pitch
Let me know what has been working best for everyone ???
Great idea Chris, it is true it is hard to put yourself out there like that but you are giving them a gift and you shouldn't feel embarrassed. You love what you do and you want to share it! IF you happen to get some new clients out of the deal GREAT. No really I know that is the point but if that is the only thing you think of and not that you love what you do and want to share it you can come off on the wrong foot. Remember why you do this and share that passion with everyone you meet and I agree with Chris your business will EXPLODE!
Surge Ahead!
Great Post Chris
I am planning on implementing this strategy asap – the only problem I have is that I don't know WHERE to train all these people.
If I train them in the gym I work out of then I will have to pay the session time and that will cost me a lot of money out of pocket with no cash flow coming in from these sessions, which I can't afford to do.
And as for doing it in parks and such, I've found that most parks are tightasses about their permits and permission to train groups and it ends up being even more expensive than the gym!
How did you solve the problem of finding a location to train people, especially at the beginning when you don't have a lot of cash and can't afford huge up front expenses?
Would really appreciate some help with this. Thanks!
Chris,
Thanks for the great advice. I'm definitely gonna do this!
Thank you so much for this video, everything you say make a lot of sense!!!!
Hey Chris,
Greetings to you from the UK. Awesome stuff!! I`ve been reading your`s, Bedros`s, Steve`s, Kaiser`s and Craig`s stuff for the last 3 months now as I just happened to come across you guys by accident.
It really is brilliant stuff from all of you. I`m just reading one post after another on all your blogs and haven`t had the chance to comment.Just so much to absorb!!
I`m just starting my own PT business and I couldn`t have stumbled upon all this great info at a better time. I`m implementing some of these strategies that I`ve read and have generated quite a bit of interest already, WITH NO PAID MARKETING YET!!
It really is just getting out there and talking to as many people as you can. At first this didn`t come naturally to me, but I thought "what the hell, how successful do you wanna be??." My confidence is growing by the day through the great feedback I`m getting and applying the WIIFM approach. It always has to be about them and it`s working a charm!!
Keep it coming guys!! These blogs are the best find for me this year!!
Hey Chris,
Just to let you know….I HAVE BALLS! Awesome tip. I'm in the coaching program with Chris and I hit my first 5 FIGURE MONTH.
If he has spaces open you should definitely take it up.
Dan
Chris,
Yet again another great video! It's a simple strategy and that's how I actually started my bootcamp business. I trained 4 people for 2 months free. I now have 30 bootcampers in 3 months and each week I now get an average of 3 signups.
Great Strategy
Fit Coach Mike
Chris~
Great post!
Simple steps; POWERFUL results. I just took a training course on selling, and it is all about getting yourself out there and taking consistent action.
You made an excellent point about training groups and not individuals. I tried that and got killed!
I've been thinking about starting a women's fitness bootcamp specializing in women who have been injured, and this is the perfect way to get it going.
Thanks!
Teri
Hahaha, I hear you Chris on people not willing to do it. I saw something on your page from Steve Hochman saying a similar thing. I took it and hung around a fitness club asking people and even using his
line "Hey can I ask you a quick question….do you think boot camps really work?" Surprisingly enough it was a great way to pass out a flier.
However, I will give this a 30day shot. Wow 20ppl a day any and every where. I was no where near speaking to that many hahaha I was sporadically at about 5-7. hahaha
Thanks for sharing.
Chris,
you never let me down!!!
Chris, great advice as usual. Been doing this since we started our bootcamps. We now have 4 camps running and making some coin. Even in Detroit area with 20% unemployment. You always deliver Big Man.

Hey Chris,
Thanks for the video mate..
I have started doing this today
Here's something extra that I have added to it in order to give people even more value and even more incentive…
For each person they refer (who then signs on) they will get $50 in cold hard cash.
What we can then do is be in constant email contact letting them know that Hey Jane here has made $600 for referring her friends
' make it almost like a competition..
or even turn it into a competition .. offer a Free Big Screen TV to the person who makes 1000 first…
now if you're giving them 50 per sign up… thats 20 new people… and if you have even 5 people participating you now have 100 paying bootcampers…
its actually scary when you use leverage…
look forward to some more videos mate
cheers
AT
Chris dude,
I am totally doing this!!! I don't have anything to lose right now…why not do this? When you are backed up against the wall trying to get your business going in the right direction you will do just about anything…and this is something I am doing right now!!! thanks bro…
Chris Blake
Thanks Chris! You are really inspirational! Unfortunately, group
training is tough in FL summer-it's like 105 out and I don't have a studio…but I do know some cool gym owners-who allow us to train independently, so I am going to ask them about what they would charge me to comp. a group…I do talk to alot of people, and you're right-it's still the best way, and it's basically free…
Love, Aly/atppalmbeach
I'm going through the same thing that JJ is… Chris you hit the nail on the head. I was a broker back in the day and I would make 100 cold call per day. I wasn't good on the phone at first. I got bad ass because I had to.
I never considered the numbers in regards to boot camps. This is the best video that you have done. I liked the set up to.. like a good old heart to heart, raw and to the point. This is what I needed to hear today. Thanks!
Time to pick up my skirt grab my balls and do work!
Chris dude you're the man. My camp is starting in about a week or two and all thanks to you!! I owe you, im doing exactly what you say and so far its been amazing. Thanks again.
Adam:
I LOVE the bonus $50 and competition; FANTASTIC idea! I agree this ups the ante for everyone involved. Thanks for your input!
Teri
SORRY CHRIS I COULD ONLY HEAR YOU HALF WAY
I'm up for the challenge. I'm going to start right away. That's one of my biggest fears…talking to random people, so I'm going to get over it now!
OHHHHH SHIT SON!
The challenge is ON!!!
Chris McCombs is NOT human NOR is he from planet earth!
–z–
WE are going to put this on overdirive!!!!
How?
By making the offer infront of larger groups of people, such as business networking groups, parent and toddler groups and womens meeting groups such as the WI (Womens Institute)… going to add some scarcity to their offer and Bang… warps speed baby… well hopefully anyway!
keith (UK)
Hey Teri.. no worries
Here's another great way to do it… let's say you haven't got the $$$ to get a big screen tv…
Try this…
Again let's say you have 5 or 10 people on this deal… $50 per person for each that signs on..
For the Month of August (often a slow month for may trainers) or September is a good one bcuz everyone is back into routine and have often had too many bbqs over the summer..
Give them $100 per sign up.. what you MUST do is have an email that goes out say 3 times per week to these people.. and in that email you have a Leaderboard..
eg: John Smith – $400, Jayne Stakes – $400 – Bob Turner $200 and then have it all the way down to $0
Now what this will do is give huge encouragement to those that are killing it… they're top of the leaderboard and making the big bucks… it will also give ppl at the bottom a kick in the butt…
the key here is the recognition and the social proof… hey if John can make $400 then I can too… gives them the drive to get more referrals in for you..
hope that helps
Adam
Hey Chris,
I love your blog and your attitude.
You said that you' re very good at persuading prospective clients.
I would love to see a video done with you giving examples of how you approached people and what you said that made them think… I gotta go check this guy out.
What about giving people a card (after they have said yes they would love come do a free session with you) with a teaser, your info, expiry date for the free sessions and an sign up for the free ebook or newsletter at http://www... Then at least you can get people you are interested but they're not ready to take action yet you snag their info and they may choose to buy a product instead or join your boot camp in a month or two or even pass info on to friends or family.
Thanks for the great info,
Tamara
Hey Chris,
I love all of your powerful video posts and thanks for the help!
What about special made business cards advertising a FREE 2 WEEK membership to BootCamp and handing these out along with talking to 20 people a day? Giving them something to take home with them and to remind them of our conversation later on…
Keep up the great work and thanks again.

Chris man AWESOME stuff dude!!
I am also one of those people who will not naturally go out and talk to people, im more of a layed back quiet individual.. but F**K THAT!!!! that changes right here and now! Ive taken massive action and advertised my Boot Camp to open next week! and im going to go out tomorrow and keep talking to as many people as i can!!
Old skool always wins!
thanx chris!
Aidan
Chris, GREAT stuff! just getting back into the Bus and have developed my own unique spin on boot camps. CIBER BODIES. Cardiio / Intensive / Bodyweight / Exercise / Routines. Launching it next month and this sounds great. Thanks for the advice. Once again great work!
Mark
Great stuff Chris,
we are all so engrossed with the computer stuff, website, blogs etc, that we often forget about good ole face-to-face time with prospects. I'm on it Chris, thanks again for lighting a fire under my lazy ass!
BTW, to your other readers looking for palces to hold their bootcamps, I am currently on the beach with my group, but will need to come indoors for the winter here in Jersey. I am looking at dance studios, martial arts studios and roller skating rinks as possibilities to stage indoor camps in the early morning hours. I will let you know how it turns out buddy. Peace my friend!
Thanks for the idea Chris. I did this with our cross fit program and it worked very well.
I also did it with personal training for 30 min sessions and did a launch looking for 20 people who wated 50% off pt.
Brien
THANK YOU CHRIS IVE STARTED DOING THAT ALLREADY ,OFFERING GROUP TRANNIG FOR FREE . IT HAS WORK REALLY WELL IM GETTING TO BILUD IT UP BIG TIME.
I got my cards ready!!
Sounds awesome Chris, but what about trainers like myself who do HOME training? Could this still work?
Wicked man, love it! Been watching some of your other videos and I love the concept of your "train them for free", etc. I have a quite a few personal training clients that are no longer training and I am just in the process of getting in touch with them to see if they would consider training again for free based on referals.
What do you consider to be an appropriate arrangement for this? For example, I do mostly 1-on-1 and 2-on-1 training (although after watching and reading your content I know I must get into more group training) and I was thinking of offering them a month of free training say for 2 x 1/2 hour sessions per week and then if they get me a referral then more training for them. What if they don't, is that something you lay down at the start?
What have you done in the past and the way you teach it now?
Also, just a suggestion to install "subscribe to comments" plugin for WP so we can subscribe to your reply, others' comments, etc. if at all possible?
Regards, Clayton
