If I Had To Start My Personal Training Business All Over Here's 20 Things I Would Do

Hey there… hope you're doin' awesome… all's great here… this post has some great fitness business building tips

Been hitting the weights pretty hard lately after a 3 year lay-off

In the last month I gained 15 pounds but lost 4 inches in my stomach ( went from 327 up to 342 but I'm definitely quite a bit leaner… I'll have a six pack at around 250lbs or 260lbs… guns are 20.5 inches and already have some veins poppin' out in them)… I'm stiff-legged deadlifting 375lbs for eight, shrugging 475lbs for fifteen EASY and strict bent-over barbell rowing 275lbs for ten… no bounce at all… not the kind of big weights I used to hit, but I've only been back a month and hell, I almost 40… thank God for muscle memory, it looks like all those years I focused on powerlifting weren't wasted after all

I think my hernia popped out again though.. the little f*cker… had it fixed surgically around 3 years ago… and not that thing is back dammit… but I'll deal with that down the road

This post is about what I would if I were to start my personal training business today from scratch knowing what I know now… these are pretty much the things I did do.. some just took a few years to figure out… so this time I'd do em' much earlier in the game

Right now it's 1:18pm on a weekday and I just got to work… what does today consist of?

  • About 20 minutes of emails, which I just banged out
  • Then I helped a coaching client dramatically increase the conversions on his website, before he was getting about 1% of web visitors into his training program, the improvements we made should get him up to between about 5% and 10% conversions, probably closer to 6-7% … this took around 30 minutes ( Here's the program he's in by the way: Click here to learn more about the coaching program )
  • Now I'm writing this blog post and will soon load it up into email broadcast management system
  • Next I'm writing an article and creating two videos for next months sold out Fitness Marketing Manifesto
  • Then I'm gonna through this months to-do list and prioritizing things… mostly focusing on my critical 5%… which will mostly be helping my coaching clients blow up the living sh*t out of their personal training businesses and boot camps… working on two product launches I have coming up within the next month of two… and raising a million dollars for the Make-A-Wish Foundation with my buddy Bedros… we're doing this through the documentary we're making on the sub-culture of internet marketing

I'll be done around 5:30

Thank God my personal assistant is so on top of her stuff, don't know what I'd do without her… and my wife Sarah has been handling a lot of the important administrative parts of the business as well… they make my life a lot easier… I trust your delegating out as much as possible as well

Today I'm up to about 10 sources of income and really don't work much more than part time hours ( that's the beauty of proper internet marketing)… but let's say I had to start over today from scratch what would I do?

Here's the most important things I would focus on…

  1. Set specific goals with timelines, and have a plan to reach those goals
  2. Make sure wherever you train it's an awesome environment… luckily I trained at Hochmans gym and that place had possibly the best energy in the world and was EXTREMELY fun ( I still have about 6 or 7 of the trainers who work for me over there)
  3. Do group training and boot camps
  4. Read this blog, Bedros's blog and Steve's blog everyday or as often as possible
  5. Focus on helping people, start with taking on about 30 free people who can pay with referrals ( I explain the process here)
  6. If your heads not right, get it into a better place by studying and applying stuff from Napoleon Hill, Bob Proctor and Maxwell Maltz
  7. Read Dale Carnegie's "How to Win Friends and Influence People" and treat everyone like that book says
  8. Survey your market and find out exactly what they want, then sell em' that and sneak in what they need along the way
  9. Collect a display a MASSIVE stockpile of before and after pics
  10. Get a direct-response "greased slide" sales site and optimize it for the search engines, with LOTS of optimized pages
  11. Send a TON of links to the site using your main KW's as the anchor text to the appropriate pages
  12. Focus on dominating Google Organic with "double listings" for every single one of your keyword phrases mixed with every single location that people would reasonably drive from to see you
  13. Get listed at the top in Google Local and get lots of positive reviews
  14. Get 10-12 Craigslist adds up a day on an AM / PM rotation using good solid direct response in the ads
  15. Get Facebook ads up an rolling and make sure you track it and tweak it all correctly so you can turn a big profit
  16. Get good at using the local based strategy for Google Adwords, paying as little per click as possible while still getting as many clicks from targeted traffic as possible
  17. Set up referral systems
  18. Set up retention systems
  19. Document and systematize as many aspects of the business as possible AND find the right people to do as much of the work for you as possible
  20. Network with people who you can create win/win business relationships with

Well, there ya go… 20 things I would do right away if I had to start all over

If you'd like to learn more about a few of these areas, here's what I recommend…

To dominate all the internet stuff like Craigslist, Facebook, Google Local, Google Adwords, Google Organic as well as having a client generating sales site… then you'll definitely want the Market Annihilator… just click here to learn more about it

And if you'd like a little more hand holding and want me to help you personally in a one-on-one environment then I recommend this program right here … however it's not for people who are cheap or dead beats … but if you're willing to invest in your business and are a go-getter, then check it out

And if you already kick butt at all the internet stuff and are getting lot's of new clients on a regular basis from online, but your overwhelmed with the client load and wanna systematize and outsource as much of your business as possible, then I recommend this right here

Alright, well that's about it for this post, let me know what you would if you had to start your business over from scratch today in the comment section below…

Good post as usual, Chris.

Good stuff Chris!

That's my favorite question to ask successful people in this industry as it changes so fast.

"What would you do NOW if you were just starting?"

Can't wait to see Add to Cart! Any idea on when it will be available?

Keep hittin' those weights man;-)

Greg Justice @ 5:35 am

Chris,

Your list is very good and it's been so long ago that I started my business that it's hard to even think about starting over…but I'll try.

The first thing I would do is to put myself in front of the right crowd…you know, the 'best' clients in town. If you get just one of those 'best' clients early on, it will make your life a lot easier and expedite the whole process…referrals from the 'A' list ROCK!

Second, and this is an extension of the first step, I would join the Chamber of Commerce and other networking groups, once again, putting myself in front of the right people. Networking, and I mean face to face networking, is one of, if not the single most important element in this type of business.

It's 'old school' but it works. Face to face networking still has an impact second to none, in my opinion.

Chris,

great stuff. Concise and to the point. All are key tips to being successful if one is consistent and follows through.

And if folks here haven't checked out the Market Annihilator yet and are sitting there wondering why your sites don't rank high but the competition down the street is, well…he's probably in Market Annihilator.

If you can't get one new client a month with that system to pay for the cost of membership, check to make sure your computer is plugged in, cause you're doing something seriously wrong.

I was able to get ride of an SEO consultant that was charging me big money each month with minimal results and manage to rank first page of Google for the majority of our top key words - not just one listing, but often 2,3,4 and on some, even 6 listings in the top 10!

Great tips, Chris! Keep an eye on that hernia and be careful…we love the Guinea pig!!

Chris Rogers @ 8:32 am

Chris,

Quality post, I'm about to take a month out of my business due to an injury (herniated disc) and this has just given me an awesome to do list while I'm lying on my back in Spain! Just from joining the kick back lifestyle club (which kicks ass by the way!), reading this blog, PTpower and Steve's blog I've gone from 1 revenue stream to 3 in the last 6 months doubling my revenue, enabling me to take the 4 weeks off and still earn while I'm rehabbing!

Thanks so much Chris!

John Thompson @ 11:02 am

Awesome Post Chris-

These are definitely the key factors in running a successful personal training business.

Keep em coming

John

Chris,
Great ideas! Our training studio is 9 years old and I am going to get some of these concepts implemeted by our manager to take it to the next level while I focus on growing our 2nd company, fitness management software. I think your concepts apply to both companies.

good job on the workouts! Will I be seeing you in Kentucky in Sept for Boot Camp Boot Camp?

Callie Durbrow @ 1:39 pm

Thanks for another AWESOME post Chris. I always like these posts that are so simple and to the point that it puts me back on track! Craigslist ads have been killing it for me lately!

David Bohmiller @ 1:55 pm

Chris,

You, Bedros, and Steve consistently deliver better free information than most other people are charging for.

This list alone should allow everyone reading it to dramatically improve both their business(es) and quality of life.

I'll be taking a few tips that I hadn't picked up on before and applying them to my own website(s) and business(es).

Thanks again,
Boh

Good stuff Chris. I would most definately had before and afters of clients over the last 30 years. Dang I do regret that. Would fill a flipping scrapbook. Also all the press and magazines and tv clips from years ago to use on website. never thought about keeping the stuff–stupid.

Sara Hutniak @ 3:42 pm

Hi Chris.
I just finished the audio book 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and your monthly to-do list and prioritization of the goals was discussed - this is something that I'm starting to do as well.
Your kick back lifestyle sounds amazing: working part time hours and getting income through 10 different sources. I want that more than I can express in words.
I must take part in your coaching programs, but are you going to still be offering them by October? (when I'll finally be on the 6-figure income path through my boot camps via the Steve Hochman formula). If so, reserve me a spot as I'm committed to making my fitness business succeed beyond 6 figures.

Good post as usual. I like number six, "getting your head in the right place". Sometimes I'm just not "in the mood" to deal with stuff or workout (I'm a little moody and not always the nicest person) and when that happens nothing gets done which is terrible. My tip for this is to just start doing whatever it is you don't feel like doing. By that I mean start small or start slow, once you take that first step you will start rolling in no time and then BANG, you're done. So yes, "getting your head in the right place" is key for people like me.

Thanks Chris!

Awesome post, Chris!

Following your ideas, I have been able to grow my personal training business from just being a "chain gym" trainer to actually being out on my own and making things happen. Thanks for the great info!

Luke Wold @ 5:30 pm

Yo Chris!

Thanks for reminding me I need to get on my Craigslist Domination System!

A lot of people are noticing that I hardly seem to work but am making more cashola than them and so are asking me how to become a trainer.

Now I usually send them to your blog, but now I'll send them straight to this post!

Thanks man, saved me some typing.

Peace!

~ Luke

Daniel Munday @ 10:02 pm

cheers mate, that's a good 'un.

I can definitely say that by following just a couple of the ones above I'm already ranking a helluva lot better on Google than I used too.

Funny but really interesting! The guidelines are just great and beginners should take note of those.

* Results are not typical. Advertised results are only typical of people who worked their tails off and followed every one of the fitness marketing strategies and personal training tips that I outline on my site to really explode their fitness business. Also, if you click on a link on my site to someone else's product, there's a good chance I'm makin' a profit off of it, probably even a steep one.
