5 Minutes a Day To More Fitness Training Clients… Who Will Stay With You Longer and Get You More Referrals

Here's a super quick tip that works great for…

1. Getting referrals

2. Keeping clients longer

It's really simple… call each one of your clients each and every month… so if you have 30 clients, everyday call one

Call them and tell them how proud of them you are for making such positive changes in their life

Tell them how grateful you are for trying so hard during the workouts

Ask them what they ate today and what they plan on eating the rest of the day… give em' a little quick guidance in that area if needed

Thank them again for that referral they got you the other day

Tell them you can't wait til their next workout… cuz' it's gonna be a great one

Pump em' up and tell them how excited you are to be helping them along this journey, and if they just __________ ( eat a little better, do a little more cardio, whatever it is they need)… that you know they're going to be looking great soon

Leave a voice message if you don't get em' on the phone live… I used to call when I knew they were at work, I'd call right before lunch, because I knew they'd wanna play the message for their co-workers after they heard it which helped get me a TON of referrals ( more of a female thing… telling the coworkers that is)

Doing this will separate you from 99% of the trainers out there

This simple thing will take you like 5 minutes a day, or maybe 15 minutes if you run large boot camps and have over a hundred or so clients… but you get the point… it hardly takes any time at all.

Your clients will stay with you longer and you'll get more referrals… both of which equal more money

Leave a comment below letting me know if you use this strategy or plan to use it

It's one of my favorites I relied on for years

Oh yeah, and be careful, this will cause a few more of your clients to get crushes on you… but that's just part of being a trainer

Hey Chris
Have been calling my clients and showing concern. It's so simple and yet overlooked. The clients will know you're concerned about them and will work out harder and eat better.

beyond bootcamp @ 3:06 am

Yes I sometimes use this stategy but I don't want to come across as too needy and don't want to stalk them.

joyce moore @ 4:01 am

Hey Chris…great tip! I was supposed to start doing this last month and totally forgot to implement it. Thanks for the reminder :)

Andy Jeffries @ 4:31 am

that great advice, we also give them a few health bars or a free session, for hit there targets.
one of my clients just can't help himself , we've had 5 referrals from him.

Casey G @ 4:53 am

If you want to leave them a message without talking to them there is a service called SlyDial ( http://www.slydial.com/ ) which automatically connects you to their mobile voicemail. Nice if you just wanna get to the point, leave a message, and move on.

Scott Williams @ 5:37 am

sounds like a good idea mate, but with over 450 people going each week between Boot Camp and PT i would never get off the phone. Might get my NEW P.A to do some thought when she starts next week.

Martone A Fuller @ 5:45 am

That is great stuff and I look forward to using it more than I already have

Josh Berthold @ 6:01 am

I like it!!! I do do this and find that it does work! I used to always call my one client at work and talk to her assistant for abour 5 minuetes about training before i'd talk to my actual client…it was like phone flirting!

Chris @ 6:10 am

Have always done this naturally out of genuine interest… and the natural result is definitely trust, appreciation, and certainly continued training with you.

Joe @ 7:00 am

This is good stuff! Google Voice aka Grand Central has been a life saver for contacting my clients! Now I text and call my clients all the time right from google. I can't wait until they release it to developers, can you imagine what Google Voice and a software like ACT! would be like. Good stuff Chris!

Bryan @ 7:24 am

Great post!

I call 2/3 of my my clients every day or they call me and i have a quick chat, have a bit of 'craic' and even if im not scheduled to meet them for a few days i give them tips on what they should be doing/eating etc…

I even call old clients and just chat about how they are gettin on, how their holidays were etc. Its always appreciated and then you are fresh in their mind when the opportunity to refer comes along :-)

Karen Pettie @ 7:24 am

great idea Chris! Aside from pumping up the client, it is nice for them to know their trainer is thinking about them and their progress when they aren't face to face.

Thanks for the tip- I definitely plan on using it!

mike salvietti @ 7:30 am

i probably cant do this one. i had an issue a couple months ago where a client of mine was calling/texting me daily multiple times a day and trying to flirt with me and it got a little out of hand. she was saying that she was having dreams about me and wierd stuff like that. so if i do this, which i would liek to, i would probably not be able to do it to ALL my clients. but that might not be so good because i dont want to show favoritism as well.

Luke Wold @ 7:30 am

Yo Chris!

I do this with my clients (as per your advice).

But when I call I also makes sure to tell them how everyone else is impressed with them.

"Deirdre, John and Susan have noticed the extra energy you bring to class and they freakin' love having you here. Thank you sooo much for being a great example"

Then they work on being consistent with this view and work harder in class and really build rapport with their fellow bootcampers.

Thanks man!

Ty @ 7:36 am

Hey Chris I haven't tried this one yet but it seems like a good one. Thx for the tip. I'm still soaking up on that 43 tips post u sent out a few days ago. Goldmime in there.

Saman Bakhtiar @ 8:45 am

So simple but yet so effective. This is definitely a gold nugget Chris.

Brandon Campbell @ 9:17 am

Thanks Chris! Great post! I was doing this at the beginning of summer after FBS, but I hadn't even realized that I stopped. Thanks for the reminder! You are dead on with how important it is. It may not seem like it, but I really think this falls into that top 5% of things that we should really do personally because it is so powerful! Keep up the great posts!

Phil Gephart @ 10:45 am

Referrals are the way to really grow your business! Phone calls work!!! I call all my clients once a month

Doug Seamans @ 12:52 pm

Good advice as usual Chris! Now I just need to find that 5 minutes! I'm sure I can come up with it somehow, even just sending a text message is nice and that only takes 1 minute. This should be added to the "daily to-do list"!

Gold Big man, gold. This is an awesome way to let clients know you CARE. That's what they want, to know you care and you will have a long term client.

Nikol @ 9:26 pm

I really like this idea. I actually send my clients cards when they make progress or reach a new goal. Takes a little more than 5 minutes, but is an awesome way to show you care!

Keep up the good work, Chris!

Mike Bach @ 11:17 am

All part of constant contact. I also do it face to face in more detail every so often to tell them how well they're doing or when they've reached a goal.

Mike Bach @ 11:19 am

Good poinnt by Luke! Telling them what others have said about them really hits a high note : )

William Colburn @ 5:27 pm

Chris you gota check this out. I dont know if you permitted this or not but this guy plagerized your whole website.
Check it out

Thanks Chris, Awesome tip. I started doing that today and will continue to do so. You're the man!

Temecula Personal Trainer @ 10:01 pm

Chris, Great tip. Like you said, its one of the things that separates the top 1% from the other 99% of trainers.

Lou @ 9:58 pm

Chris, I couldn't believe what my eyes were seeing when I saw that San Diego website that William pointed out. Frickin' amazing!! Talk about plagerizing to the max! I cannot believe that people have got the sheer audacity to that, especially when you have at the bottom of the website…"All Rights Reserved. Reproduction without permission prohibited." Interesting how he hasn't got that at the bottom of his website! Everyone shold leave a phoney name with number on his contacts and when he calls back to absolutely take the mickey out of him. What a tosser!

Nathan Cragg @ 10:42 pm

My plan is to call around lunch/afternoon or evening after the first workout whether paying client or free trial, to see how they're doing. I think this will work pretty well in conjunction with a monthly call and weekly or so text.

William, funny thing about that website is there is an EXACT before and after picture on my main competition in Colorado….Looks like one or the other just got caught ;)

Jeremy Schaeler @ 1:42 am

Good reminder for something we should all be doing on a regular basis. I also brag publicly via my face book, which a lot of my clients are on, as well as a lot of other friends, friends of friends, etc.. not only do my clients enjoy the recognition, it creates a bit of a competitive spirit when they see other peoples achievements, and for those who don't train to become interested.

Awesome advice. I started doing this last month and it really works. Thanks.

caleb @ 10:01 am

this is awesome Chris! Free retention is the best retention.

Robert Foster @ 7:23 pm

I think you had mentioned this before and we so quickly can forget. I appreciate the reminder. This will totally help with getting more referrals!

January 10, 2010

travis @ 9:43 am

Chris,
