An Important Question
I have a SUPER important question for you… and I'd love to hear your answer in the comment section below…
In your fitness training business, what is your main 'contribution' goal?
Example, in my business… not my local personal training business, but in my info-marketing / coaching and consulting business, my goal is:
Help 1000 fitness experts make six and seven net incomes working where they want, when they want and as little or as much as they want
It's attainable, it gets me fired up and helps keep me focused on what's really important, cuz I'm as susceptible to focusing too much on the money as the next guy ( the money is important too, but it's FAR better if the goal is tied to helping others)
My goal has a far greater reach then just the 1000 fitness experts I'm helping… I'm helping fitness experts to help more people get into shape, which not only also helps THOSE people… it also makes the lives of their family's and others close to them better ( the family's of the clients the fitness trainers are helping)… and on top of that it helps the fitness experts to provide a better life for THEIR OWN families and make a larger contribution to society… so the goal goes FAR beyond the 1000 fitness experts.
I hope this makes sense.
What a great industry we're in where we're able to touch so many lives on so many levels… it's one of the main reasons I TRULY love the fitness training industry… not a lot of people have the kind of impact you do… and for that, I tip my hat to you.
Bottom line: It's really important that your goal is focused on others, it's important to have financial goals for yourself and your business, but what's your goal in terms of contribution?
Being in the fitness industry I know this is something you've probably given a lot of thought to and I would just love to hear all about it
Let me know in the comment section below, I'm really looking forward to reading it.

I would have to say my goal is to help people understand their power through exercise. After conquering my own demons from my past with getting rid of the victim mentality and finding my passion through fitness and getting a formal education in it…I would like to reach those who don't feel they have it in them to get fit, to like exercise, to quit beating themselves up and get them MOVING!
It's changed my life and I want to reach others and give the same message.
And…of course I'd love to get wealthy doing it too. More for freedom than anything.
My goal is to help people who are overweight/unhealthy realize that it is NOT hard to achieve whatever level of fitness they desire.. whether it be achieving the body of their dreams.. equipped with six pack abs and arms like arnold… Or maybe it's just to drop 5 or 10lbs so they look better in their favorite outfit…
Whatever their fitness goals are, it's my goal to help them reach it.. and basically make them realize.. It's NOT as hard as they think.. Too many people think it's impossible.
And hey… I'd love to make this my main source of income as well.. Getting paid to do what I love would be the ultimate form of success for me.
chris- make that 999 fitness experts lil homey, haha. you've def already changed my life for the better…and it's not a stretch at all to claim that you're therefore helping out those extra clients that i'm now reaching out to b/c of your work (if that makes sense).
i never made a specific number, but i'm always reminding myself to help out as many ppl as possible in as many different countries as possible…and in extreme fashion that goes far beyond fat loss.
we all know that focusing on helping/giving FIRST will inevitably lead to more money, more freedom and a better life for us (and everyone around us) in the long run.
nice post to keep things in perspective.
keep sharing your passion bro…

Hi - This is my very first post….I really enjoy reading all the posts and learning what I can.
The name of my fitness is business is "SIMPLE Fitness" - the word "SIMPLE" stands for "Simply Investing in Many People's Lives for Eternity" - this has been my goal since I began in 2000 and remains this way today.
Thanks for all you do Chris!
Anita
First of all thanks Chris for all the info you dish out. I have learned a ton in the 2 weeks since i found your site.
I'm from a small town in western Nebraska with the total population around 35,000 including the surrounding cities. My goal is to improve the health of the community/area that I live in and become the "go-to guy" for health and fitness in the region.
People here aren't too receptive to new ideas and big changes but with your marketing info, some of which i have already use with success, things will change.
Thanks again Chris and keep up the good work!

Well, I got into this, at first, for selfish reasons, because my Mother had to get a pacemaker in her mid-sixties and I was struggling with some extra weight myself and was determined to NOT end up like her. My journey led me to standing on stage with some of the most fit women I've ever met and competing in a figure competition in my early 40's and actually bringing home 2 trophies!!!
Then, as I started helping other people, even in subtle ways by giving them a tip here and there, or a bit of encouragement, I realized that this truly made a difference in people's lives. And now, this is my passion; helping others to get their health back, helping them to see that there are no limits when it comes to their physical health and then seeing how it improved their mental health and self esteem, and finally, helping them to reach goals far beyond what they ever imagined!
I don't have a set number of people, but have already seen how helping just one person to get fit has trickled down into her family and friends! It's amazing!
Thanks for sharing your dream, Chris!
hey Chris, Aaron here…My main goal in the fitness industry is to motivate and inspire as many people as possible…After being able to lose weight and get inshape myself fitness has taught me much more about myself than just losing some weight….I want to help people unlock their inner greatness and strive for excellence…I truly believe that exercise is a tool that teaches us so much about ourselves than people give it credit for…It teaches motivation, goal setting, time management, self sacrifice, it builds work ethic, and much much more….Bottom line I want people to be the very best that THEY can be..We are only given one life and one body so make the most of life each and every day.. And every one has a different idea of what living life means to them…thats what is exciting for me is with every new client brings new experiences and gives me an opportunity to learn and grow as a person and at the same time I can help impact someones life in a positive manner.

I've been in this biz for about 25 years now. My main wish for everyone of my clients was to push them past the fear factor..the barriers which prevent people from meeting or exeeding their fitness goals..most don't because they have dealt with a chronic injury and ailment..and fear having it come about it again and are afraid to go against what their doctors recommends. I would never overstep their physicians recommendations, but do notice that physicians are not fully educated on todays methodologies of fitness and nutrition. I have been able to help so many in my life, achieve a better quality of life..by making them realize their true potential. Unlike most of todays trainers, who are into for the $$$, which I'm aware we all need to eat, but I live, eat and breathe fitness as a lifestyle and passion. I am lucky enough to have transitioned from just being a Personal Trainer..to something more to my clients. As they state..I'm their sanity check, their stress relief..their rock. By the end of each session, they have clarity, they feel great, they feel destressed..my goal for them has been met. Money is not important to me, though I do pretty well compared to most, I will always accept anyone who seeks my help even if they cannot affor me.
Which brings me to my next "contribution" To open up a nonprofit studio and provide 3 month fitness/rehab/nutrition programs to the underpriviledged or to those who just can't budget personal training in. I hate to turn anyone away..and my trainers and I can only provide so much free training. Which is why I am working on a business plan to set this goal in action.
I currently do follow many of your methods for marketing. I have been utilizing direct marketing for a very long time, web marketing, seminars, you name it I have done it..and its always been a success..More importantly, one thing I stress among my trainers, is to practice what we preach. WE ARE OUR OWN MARKETING TOOL, nuff said!! LOOK THE PART. You represent a fitness lifetyle, carry that representation out of the gym. The last thing you want is to have a client see you at the local sports bar..downing shots and eating greasy chicken wings or nachos.
Through the years..my business has grown through word of mouth, as well as, I have established excellent relationships within the medical community too, which has provided much more credibility for what provide.
I could go on and on..but I just wanted to finally get an opportunity to get the word out on what I have been doing to reach not only financial success..but more personal success and fulfillment.
thanks!!!

IT ONLY TAKES ONE PERSON TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE"
Hi Chris,
I chose the fitness industry as my means to make a living, not because I thought I would get rich, (would I like to make a ton of money and have the life I dream? Of course!) but because I am passionate about helping others. I love people and I love fitness. My goal for business is to continue to grow and reach as many people as I can. To motivate and inspire and help them succeed in whatever their goal may be physically and mentally. I want them to be the best they can be, I want to help them obtain the highest quality of life in health, fitness and happiness. I want to learn to work smarter not harder so I may continue to fulfill my mission and be able to live the highest quality of life in health, fitness and happiness myself as well. The healthier and happier I am…. the better I am for everyone else.
Training, educating, and working the mind, body and spirit as a whole. That's what its all about!
Peace & Strength to you and yours dude!
I want to help people feel good about themselves and their bodies, by teaching them how to exercise. I also beleive having a sound body they'll have a sound mind and make better decisions. As with most other trainers and people in this world I would love to work in the fitness industry and make a substantial income.
Hey Cris , I hope to be earning enough to be able to use my knowledge to help those maybe can not afford it. Changing Someones body/ fitness level can have profound affect on the rest of their life.
I am currently running a beginners Kettlebell course call Bells 4 Boobies. I donating the money from the course to Breast Cancer Charities. This is because my mother and Aunt where effected by this illness. If anyone else would like to run a course please contact me. Http://www.bells4boobies.com
I would also like to help bullied children regain their confidence and self belief through fitness.

Constant improvement. For my athletes, a consistently higher level of performance. For general pop., helping them exceed their expectations.
Chris,
Great question! I want to be nationally known as Americas fitness expert for moms. I want to transform the lives and bodies (physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually) of 1,000,000 moms!
I have no doubt in my mind I will get there!
Dustin
I believe in being flexible and stable… So I am creating an entire system using nothing but "stretchy bands and stability balls".. It's gonna revolutionize the fitness industry…
oh, sh&t, I think I spelled revolutionize wrong!
I want to create my own little empire in my part of the world in a successful business that improves the quality of life, bring sunshine and happiness to the dreary people (isn't it amazing how miserable people can be), create a place that employs amazing people happily, and provide an incredible opportunity for my wife and kid….
Hey Chris,
Awesome question. My training philosophy is that of our ancestors, and the natural biomechanics of the human body. I train my clients to be prepared for anything… whether its picking up heavy furniture, carrying the groceries, throwing a ball, etc etc.. basically everything the human body was designed to do. It might sound silly, but I believe the body works in its prime when presented with challenges its meant to take on. Anyways, my goal for my clients is to present an idea of an active life, making use of their fully functional bodies. "Take advantage, never take for granted" - Me
Thanks for your awesome work Chris. Your wisdom is a blessing to me and many other people. Keep it up!!!
-Jin
Chris,
Great post. Very thought provoking. We all need a greater goal than just money.
Thanks,
Brian
I really want to bring to other women like me the changes that I have made in myself. I have 6 kids (yeah, I know - OUCH) and I gained TONS of weight and got too "lazy" to go workout. I couldn't walk around the block a year ago and I used to be an athlete. TODAY - I can run a 5K, Do pull-ups and am down 8 pants sizes from where I was a year ago. all that baby belly fat is gone! and I am finally using my experience as a Personal trainer (13 years ago) and past Marketing Director and staff trainer for a couple of local Curves franchises (I left them 6 months ago) to do my own business.
I am still in the process of adjusting my business plan to fit my family and financial means. since I am a mother and wife and this is a difficult time for most of my past clients economically - I had to rethink my past business structure and timeline of growth.
Looking at the long-term goal I would say it is to empower Women like me. Mothers - as someone else stated. give millions of women the empowerment to take on a harder and adjustable workout. to break the "routine". to find fitness solutions that work. I want to help 500 women this next year that are going to lose ALL the weight they need to and to help them build strong beautiful bodies. I want 500 women that can go from Zero pull-ups to doing 3-5 and running 5K's.
I also want to devlope a franchise that takes little equipment, little start-up cost and grows larger than Curves - better program, better management, smarter workout plans.
I want to take what I have learned from all the resources out there and create something sustainable, affordable, and doable around my large family.
I appreciate so much all the tips and helps you give - thanks!!!!!
I love this industry…
I love being able to make a positive impact on people's lives. Nowadays, I find that it is so easy for people to have a negative attitude…such as from work stresses, family stresses, etc.
As fitness professionals, it is our duty to always find the positive aspects of life, and have that attitude transfer to our clients, family and friends
I just want people to stay positive, no matter how hard life gets. It can always be worse, and we should be grateful and take advantage of each day. What better way to get the most of each day than to be healthy!
Thanks for this Chris! I started off my day on the wrong foot, and just writing this out helped me get back on track!
Chris,
It's sooooooo true. Personally, I can't believe we get paid to train people! It is SUCH a rewarding experience helping others to reach their fitness goals. They did a study that when people see other people helping others their endorphins go up more than the person doing the helping…if that makes sense!
Chris,
My main contribution to those who come to me is to help them achieve their fitness and weight loss goals and set them free from their "old" life so they can maintain their new body and move in with their "new" life without me. I train people to exercise right, get the best results and be proud of themselves. My goal is to help these people and make money doing it.

Chris,
I would have to say, I want to help my clients reach there max. Health level ever. I also want to open a chain of gyms. That's my two main goals.
Nic Mapes
I want to be able to provide for my (future) family…and I want to people to see the VALUE in developing healthy habits and living a healthy life, understand those habits aren't that difficult to put into practice and a healthy & fit life is theirs for the taking if they want it.
Man…………it's so important to remember the 'why'.
It's SO easy to do it 'all for the money'. Especially when you outsource the training and solely focus on the marketing.
I kinda find myself there right now, with 3 trainers under me my main focus is to build my bootcamps up and have my TRAINERS make a lot of money and get the life of freedom (which brings me money as well).
And I often lose sight of the actual 'changing lives' part. Does anybody else have that? Am I a total devil now? (just being honest)
