Getting Your Fitness Training Site to the Top of Google

Hey there… hope you're killing it today and kickin' some serious ass… in this post I'm gonna show you some of the things I do to get my sites to the top of Google.. but first I wanna tell you about something that just happened here at headquarters ( headquarters is actually my house… where myself and my small team work)

For the past week or so I've been putting in a lot of extra hours lately cuz I'm getting ready to open the doors on Market Annihilator 2.0 next week… so I've been working my tail off to get everything ready… ( that's the life of an info-marketer… long periods of short work days… with short periods of long work days… works for me)

My wife Sarah and my assistant Del have also been working their butts off getting ready for this launch… and in all the hustle and bustle Del just accidentally ate a bunch of moldy beef jerky

Not just a little bit… but a TON…

…You see I order beef jerky in bulk…

I order like five big ole' kilo sized bags at a time from some little general store that makes it in the foothills of Tennessee… well one of the bags was moldy and I put it on the counter so Sarah could return it… and Del saw it and started diggin in… which is kind of funny, cuz she does a lot of modeling and I hardly ever see her eat… but she must've been SUPER HUNGRY or something cuz she polished off like a half pound of the stuff… and she TOTALLY overlooked the funkalicious growth it had multiplying all over it by the minute… she friggin' ate a sh*tload of it … I guess she thought the white stuff growing on it was some kind of weird Cajun spice or something… damn.

Check it out, here's my wife Sarah working away on the launch…

Here's the moldy beef jerky that my assistant Del ate… loaded with millions of hallucinogenic lil' mushroom shaped mold spores… see em growing?

And here's Del diggin' in… wondering what this new funky flavor of jerky is… and why she doesn't feel so great after polishing off like a half pound of the stuff…

Classic.

Anyhow… ya know what? … I LOVE Google… I mean I Friggin LOVE EM'… Why?

I LOVE Google because they've been VERY NICE to me over the years… sending more new clients than I can count… and making me a lot of damn money… in fact, in my local based fitness business, Google is one of my BIGGEST streams of new clients…

It's one of the big spokes on my wheel ( remember though, it's important to have many spokes, so if one breaks, you don't eat it and fall flat on our face… NEVER rely just on one or two spokes)

In case you missed the teleseminar I did with Bedros the other day and missed the video we sent out a few days ago… my favorite places to get new clients from are:

1. Google Organic

2. Google Pay Per Click

3. Google Local

4. Facebook

5. Craigslist

Now… there's lots of other ways to get clients online, including list building, blogging, Twitter, Yahoo and so on… but the above are five of my favorites.. and they're the first five that you should focus on online.

Below I'm gonna share with you a few of my techniques for getting to the top of the free Google Organic listings… and these techniques WORK… my sites come up in positions 1 and 2 for literally hundreds of my keyword terms… often times dominating most of the page… and the same thing happens when my members and students apply this stuff as well… just check out a few others guys sites who use my techniques…

For example, here's Sam Bahktiar's site… he was the very first Market Annihilator member as well as being my second coaching client ( right after Zach Hunt)…  here you can he see he owns position #1 in the Google paid listing as well as positions 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9 and 10 in the free Google listings for his main keyword terms "Chino Personal Trainer" … Sam's site is in the red… and as you can see, he friggin takes up the whole page… and it's like this for almost ALL his keyword terms…

Here's Luke Wolds site… Luke actually won a year of the Market Annihilator in a contest I did a few months ago on this very blog… and now he owns the top four positions in Google Organic for his main keyword phrase… check it out here….

And here's Zach Hunt's site ( My first coaching client and one of the original Market Annihilator members… turned business partner… that's right, I was so impressed with how much action Zach was taking on what I was teaching him that today we're partners on multiple projects)… below you can see he's position #1 in the Google paid listing, position #1 in the Google Local listing and OWN EVERY SINGLE POSITION on page one of Google in the free organic listings for his main keyword term "Spokane Personal Trainer" … his phone rings off the friggin hook these days…

If you wanna get high in Google, there's a few things I would do today…

Remember, you want to be at the top for TONS of keyword terms… not just one or two…

There's really no need to rely on fancy keyword tools …  most of em' are actually pretty useless when it comes to marketing a local fitness business

Here's what you want to do… simply combine your location ( city, county) with your service type (and similar services)

By "service type" I mean the type of service that you offer ( like "boot camp" or "personal training")

Here's some of the service type names you'll probably wanna come up for… STARTING with your most important and targeted ones first and then working your way down the list…

  • boot camp, boot camps, bootcamp, bootcamps
  • personal trainer, personal training, personal trainers
  • fitness trainer, fitness training, fitness trainers
  • weight loss, weight loss center, weight loss clinic, weight loss program
  • health club, health clubs
  • gym, gyms
  • fitness center, fitness studio
  • workout
  • exercise

Next,  you'll wanna multiply the locations you serve by the service phrases.

So say for example you serve Fargo North Dakota and you offered personal training, boot camps and a fitness studio, you would want to come up high for…

  • Fargo boot camp, boot camps, bootcamp, bootcamps
  • Fargo personal trainer, personal training, personal trainers
  • Fargo fitness trainer, fitness training, fitness trainers
  • Fargo weight loss, weight loss center, weight loss clinic, weight loss program
  • Fargo health club, health clubs
  • Fargo gym, gyms
  • Fargo fitness center
  • Fargo workout
  • Fargo exercise

(Be sure to include the appropriate zip codes to the appropriate pages)

Now, these can't all be on the same page… you need to have a whole bunch of different pages on your site for all these different terms... one for each of your main kw phrase combination's… for example, one for all the combination's of 'Fargo personal trainer, personal training, personal trainers' and so on

Let's say for example you serve Fargo and five towns around Fargo, you'd want a minimum of 45 optimized pages - now I have no idea if there even are five towns near Fargo, I just dig the movie so I'm using it as an example.

I would have these optimized pages written by someone else ( you can get it done pretty cheap… even free if you barter it out like I've done)

Now, on these pages make sure…

  • You have your main 1-3 keyword phrase variations for the page in the title tag of the page
  • They're sales pages and are micro optimized versions of your core sales message
  • Have your main kw's for that phrase in the body copy of the page making up around 3-6% of the text on the page ( give or take)
  • Slip your main keyword phrase into the headline
  • Point links from some of your other pages to that page with your keywords as the anchor text
  • Add your keyword links to a site map on your site and link to that site map from your home page footer

Next, be sure to get as many links as possible pointing to all your deep optimized pages ( NOT just your home page) and make sure that a lot of these links have variations of your main keyword terms as the anchor text… but don't use your keywords in ALL the links cuz that's not natural… and 'not natural' is 'not good' in Googles eye's.

Now, here's some of the best ways to get links… ( not all links are created equal… the first and the last on the list are my favorites)

  • Put out high quality content that people will WANT to link to ( link bait) - these are Googles favorite kinds of links, but unfortunately for a local fitness business they're usually the hardest to get
  • Get listed in the best of the paid directories ( like the Yahoo Directory, BOTW, JoeAnt and Gimpsy)
  • Add high quality content to Squidoo and HubPages ( avoid your links being "no followed" in HubPages by making your content as high quality as possible, linking to it, and getting a nice amount of fans) - link to your site from within the body of this content
  • Add articles to the best of the article directories like EzineArticles and Isnare … and then add your links to the author resource section at the bottom
  • And my favorite… offer high quality guest posts to popular fitness blogs ( these links can be extremely powerful… but you're content better be good)

Well, there ya go, some of the ways I get my sites to the top of Google for hundreds of keyword terms… the key is to a lot of this stuff, don't just get a couple links or put up a couple pages and give up.

I also highly recommend outsourcing as much of this as possible, that's what I do.. it's what Sam does… and it's what Zach does… you can get this kind of work done at a pretty reasonable price… and the investment will typically pay itself back off 10 to 100 fold in new clients.

I'd love to hear your comments in the comment box below… and remember, the Market Annihilator 2.0 program where I dig super deep into all my ninja internet marketing tactics for local based fitness businesses … will be open for a very brief period of time first thing next week to the first 100 people to join

In Market Annihilator 2.0, here's a few of things we cover…

  • Getting to the top of Google's free organic listings ( getting clients from here is like shooting ducks on the pond)
  • How to own practically the ENTIRE first page Google
  • Getting to the top of Google's local business listings ( my technique for this is a little sneaky, but it works and is a great source of new clients)
  • Rising to the top of Google Adwords while paying less than your competitors… most fitness pro's lose their tail with Google Adwords, but I'll show you how to put it to work FOR you
  • Building a large opt-in email list so you can convert visitors on your site to new clients in cool way, where they see you as a trusted friend
  • The Myspace Domination Formula - Myspace is actually the first place I got clients from online… and while today you need to use a completely different approach, it's STILL a great place to get new clients
  • How to turn a boring website to one that'll have people practically begging to train with you
  • Video marketing secrets (any fitness pro's who aren't using video to their advantage these days is shooting themselves in the foot)
  • How to get TONS of clients from online classified sites… and how to automate the process
  • How to use your blog to build a MASSIVE following of people ( in fact, yesterday I did a post here on my blog with some techniques to get you started - it's right here: Fitness Blogging Secrets )
  • How to get clients from Facebook… for practically pennies
  • And a whole bunch of other cool stuff to help you get a ton of new clients that I ONLY share in the Market Annihilator and with my private coaching clients

And we're also adding in a program called Market Annihilator Simple, where I simplify the most important things to do first so you can start getting new clients as fast as possible… we're gonna ship that one to your house in a set of discs…

Plus we're adding two 'Q and A' call-in days a month for you to call in and ask your most pressing internet marketing questions

If you're a subscriber of mine, keep an eye out on your inbox for more details about how you get into the Market Annihilator 2.0 program before it sells out… as well as for more free tips, tricks and tactics for getting more clients.

Wow! This is really good info. Recently my blog just dropped completely out of Google. Traffic from all other sources is going up except for Google which crashed. I'm slightly peeved at that. Thanks Chris for putting this timely piece up.

P.S. Your assistant, Del who can eat moldy beef jurkey will probably be able to make a lot of money from doing dares. Lol!

Jonas Deffes @ 9:28 pm

wow DEL!

Michael Duivis @ 11:54 pm

I LOVE Market Annihilator.

In fact, Friday night is Market Annihilator night for me.

I just need to stop inviting girls over to my house when I know I'll be watching Market Annihilator. They come over all dressed up while I'm in my "I'm with Bedros" shirt watching Market Annihilator.

I LOVE Market Annihilator.

Very useful article. I'm gonna try these strategies for sure!
I just recently got my first blog up and running, but traffic is still slow. But only been about a week and a half.

It usually takes some time until Google lists my site, right?

Sup Chris Ive seen your link on my myspace page for a while now. And Im really glad I finally did. Ive been a trainer for about five years and I recently quit my job at golds gym because I was sick of the hours, 9 and some time 10 hours days. I recently had the Ideas to form Apt fitness. which starts for Apartment fitness. MY company will offer on site personal training for every apartment complex with a state of the art gym. Im really driven and would love to be taken under your wing.

That sounds like a lot of work…

Steve Morris @ 12:18 pm

See, I get confused when it says "pages." For example, you have 7 or 8 main pages here, Chris. Obviously not over 100.

But, if you count every time you post a blog, which leads to a page this one is http://www.kickbacklife.com/2009/09/23/getting-your-fitness-training-site-to-the-top-of-google/

Is that what you mean by all these pages on the site?

-Steve

Steve Morris @ 12:23 pm

Also, where would I find someone who could write them?

I was considering using Website Formula…anyone have any experiences with them?

Thanks again

Chris McCombs @ 1:49 pm

Hey Steve - I'm confused by your question

Most sites have more than one page… a home page, about page, site map, category pages, articles and so on… the more pages the better for seo, as long as they're unique and especially if they're optimized

FWF kicks butt by the way
