37 No-Cost and Low-Cost Ways To Make More Money in Your Fitness Business

A Fitness Business Marketing Post by Chris McCombs

Hey there… hope you're doin great… kickin ass… gettin' people into shape… and finding some time to chill here and there… I LOVE chillin'… in fact, one of my favorite ways to chill is to kick back on the couch, watch some TV and write a blog post ( like I'm doing right now) … tonight it's Sons of Anarchy… love that damn show… the Sopranos on Harley's

In this post I wanna talk about some of my favorite no-cost and low-cost ways to make more money in your fitness training business… now keep in mind, before delving into these ideas I want to make it clear that I don't know of one successful business owner… be it in fitness or otherwise.. who doesn't invest in their business on a regular basis.

If you're not willing to put something in, you probably won't get much out…  but I understand some new trainers don't have much ( if any ) money to invest at first… I know I didn't… so at first my investments were minimal and I used a lot of these low-cost/no-cost techniques… and then after the money started rolling in I was able to re-invest more and more into my business… as long as the ROI is there… invstmenting money into your business is a no-brainer… but sometimes it's nice to make money without spending any

So here ya go…

1. Train people for free using the human billboard strategy to get referrals

2. Instead of training one-on-one, train groups and/or boot camps

3. Bomb the hell out of Craigslist on a consistent basis with solid direct response ads

4. Put your clients on EFT ( sure you'll pay a small percent in fees, but you'll end up making WAY MORE)

5. Improve your sales process

6. Improve your retention systems

7. Improve your referral systems

8. Improve your prosperity mindset

9. Improve your social skills / personality

10. Grow your circle of influence and become a better influencer

11. Call your clients up on a regular basis and pump them up

12. If your demographic is right and you train groups, fill your group workouts with attractive and flirty females .. this'll get guys signing up like crazy ( strategy not for everyone)

13. Use Hochmans plastic card referral strategy ( the cards do cost a little, but not much )

14. Raise your energy

15. Make your workouts more fun

16. Be funnier

17. Do crazy things in your workouts to give your clients something to talk about around the water cooler

18. Put people on longer agreements ( I like one year agreements that continue on a month to month basis after the year is up)

19. Come back to this blog on a regular basis ( hey… this blog is free!)

20. Read Steve Hochmans blog on a regular basis

21. Read Bedros's blog on a regular basis

22. Get the Auto-Delegation Tool Box for a buck

23. Use Hochman's 10 x 10 method

24. Get your site in Google Local ( free) and get a lot of positive reviews from your clients

25. Do something TOTALLY OUTRAGEOUS to get local media attention

26. Barter out as much work and marketing as you can that helps you get more clients

27. Get more people into better shape

28. Collect before and after pictures obsessively and display them all over the friggin' place

29. Spend 5 minutes everyday day sitting quietly thinking about how you can better serve your clients

30. Put on free Saturday boot camps.. and convert members into your paid programs

31. Contact old clients on a regular basis just to say hi and make sure they're still moving in the direction of their fitness goals

32. Do some free public speaking events

33. Recognize your clients on a regular basis for their achievements

34. Be grateful for the clients you have and show them that you appreciate them being your clients

35. Get more certifications… AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HA HA HA… just joking.. actually that probably won't make you any more money at all.. but it sure as hell will cost ya ( read more about that one here )

36. Build a large friend basis of local residents who fit your demographic on Facebook and give them lot's of good content on a regular basis

37. Build a large following of local residents who fit your demographic on Twitter and give them lot's of good content on a regular basis

There ya have it,  37 No-Cost and Low-Cost ways to get you started making more money

In the comment section below I'd love to hear about any of these that have worked well for you… and maybe even some other low-cost or no-cost methods that you like but I didn't list here

And if you'd like to find more ways to implement this stuff into your business, more time to do it, and create systems in your business that can actually do the work for you… I HIGHLY recommend you grab the Auto-Delegation Tool Box for just a buck… when you get it, you'll also get a complimentary month of the Kick Back Lifestyle Club… these programs contain the same systems myself and Zach Hunt use to get more done in our fitness business in less time… while most trainers are spinning their wheels and working long hours for so-so pay, we've created systems in our business that actually WORK FOR US… and you can put these exact systems to work for you in your own business… all the details are on this page:

Jonas Deffes @ 8:42 pm

you sure do have a talent for choosing pics!

Michael Duivis @ 9:32 pm

Yes, very awesome post!

I would add #38. Going the extra mile in everything. Do things without asking anything in return.

I just started doing that and the payoff has been TREMENDOUS, particularly through Monsieur Hochman.

Great post Chris. Have you looked at our software to handle all the EFT, scheduling and member management-www.myvolo.com? Check us out we'd love to talk with you more about it. We originally designed it for our own Personal Training studio, our studio is still going strong after 9 years and we are helping change other people's fitness businesses by giving them tools to streamline their biz. It is awesome to get to talk with so many professionals every day!

Haha, I love the joke about getting more certifications! Hahaha! Seriously, what a waste (kind of).

I think out of that whole list, the thing I know I need to work on the most is my retention systems. My turnover is pretty high (in my opinion, but I've never worked for a chain gym or someone else and I don't know what other trainers' turnover rates are). I'm starting to get a lot of new client, which is great, but I really wanna keep em…for a long time. So that's something I need to get all over (among other things).

And I agree with Jonas! Damm that last girl is cute as hell! And what a nice midsection!

Anyways, thanks again for the great advice Chris, always keepin me thinkin!

Great post, bro!

Here's one of my favorites: Grab another trainer and give them a bunch of the extra clients you're getting with Market Annihilator, then split everything 50/50. You don't pay them until their clients start paying, so it doesn't cost you anything to get started!

I just started doing this and it's really cool, the hardest part was emotional, having someone else represent me was difficult at first, now I dig it!

And the friggin' best part about having a training crew? You can raise YOUR rates. "Jake uses my training systems and is $30/session. If you want MY small group sessions it is $50/session."

Thanks Chris, I just watched your "Mack Daddy Communications" presentation in the Fitness Marketing Manifesto. I'm turing it into a guide for the trainers I'm going to have work under me!

Muchas Gracias,

~ Luke

Hey Chris
Another kickass post from you. Short and sweet. I like #8.

Casey @ 8:01 am

I like #25 "Do something TOTALLY OUTRAGEOUS to get local media attention"

Give us an example? What have you done?

Chris McCombs @ 8:36 am

Casey - It wasn't me, but two trainers from Steves gym went out and worked out for 36 hours straight on a busy street corner… it was pretty crazy… all kinds of news crews came and stuff
