Group Training Strategies
A Group Training Strategies Post by Chris McCombs
>>> Question from reader <<<
"Chris I love your blog, it's definitely helped my training business. You're always talking about group training, but I'm not sure it's the way to go…Why is it better than private one-on-one training and if I do decide to do, how in the world can I talk my clients into it?"
>>> My comments <<<
Hey thanks for reaching out…Training groups is a much better business model than doing private training for many reasons….You can make a whole heck of a lot money by getting 5,6 or even 8 people to pay you every hour compared to just 1… most private trainers make $20 to $80 an hour… with groups you can easily make a few hundred an hour.
You can free up a ton more time by condensing your training – typically you can train upwards of 70 clients training just three mornings and three evenings a week. And group training is much more fun than training private or other models, after a while one-on-one training can get pretty boring, with group training strategies it's almost always fun, there's just so much more energy and excitement. You also get more referrals… face it, since your client base will be that much bigger, you'll have that many more clients to refer you their friends and family, ESPECIALLY ones who will want to workout together.
Plus, it's much easier to convert prospects into clients as you can offer more affordable programs (plus longer stick rate) as they can afford it longer. Basically you can give your clients all the benefits of private training AND MORE while still in groups – Not only is it better for you to train in groups, but it's also just as beneficial for your clients.
Make sure you present group training ideas as THE solution to their fitness problem. You keep them accountable, ask them about their nutrition / eating and everything else you would do with private training as well. You just don't waste time by watching people rest or shooting the breeze talking about the latest crap on the news… it's as easy to train 4 or 6 people as it is as one… and the money is just so damn much better.
As for converting your current private clients into groups, that's easy…First, make your group training program about 20%-25% less than your private training prices, so if you normally charge $60 for private sessions, charge an average of $45-$49 for your group workouts ( this is PER PERSON for groups of 4-6 people, for boot camps make your prices around 30%-50% of your private session prices)
Position your group training strategy as the "best" kind of training around, you can touch on points like how much more fun the workouts are, the camaraderie of the groups, how the energy lifts everyone up, the competitiveness which makes it hard to slack off, how they'll have more flexibility in their scheduling and how they'll be able to train with their friends if they want to. Just because it costs a little less, NEVER position it as budget training, even though it does save them money, position it as the best way to get into shape. ( You need to believe this as well, not just them) And whatever you do, don't ASK your clients to do it, just tell them this is how you're going to be doing it now… remember…
YOU are the authority here, and just like a doctor PRESCRIBES a solution, you too PRESCRIBE the solution… if you lose 5% of your client base, no biggie, you'll end up making WAY more in the long run WHILE working fewer hours.
(You can always outsource some of that 5% to other trainers anyhow … if you need help with outsourcing then you'll wanna grab The Auto-Delegation Tool Box ) Also, whatever you need to do to make it happen, make your group workouts super fun, so people will enjoy them much more than they would private sessions. And remember, YOU need to believe in your group fitness training workouts, cuz if you don't they won't either… NEVER apologize for training groups, always be in the "vibe" of this is the best way to get into shape.
I highly recommend you get some help in setting all this up, the best thing you can do is grab Group Training Exploder System to help you set-up your entire six-figure group training business from the ground up. Also, if you want to be a real client-getting ninja I suggest you get good at internet marketing. The internet is by far one of the best places to get clients from, and if you do it right you can even get new clients on a daily basis… lemme tell ya, there's just about nothing as exciting as getting new group training client EVERY SINGLE DAY… pretty soon you'll be able to hire a bunch of trainers to work under you.
I strongly suggest you grab The Market Annihilator 2.0 to help with your online marketing.
If you'd like to earn five or more times as much as the typical fitness trainer and be able to work part time hours, then I HIGHLY recommend you get into group ( semi-private ) training
Group trainers can make $100,000.00 to $250,000.00 per year and can often do it working only 20 or 25 hours a week. Along with boot camps, it is by far the most profitable way kind of fitness training business to have.
