Switching Your Clients From Private Training to Group Training
By now most trainers know that the real way to get ahead in the industry is to do either group training or boot camps… since there's just not a lot of money in one-on-one private personal training, unless of course 80 hour work weeks are something you're into.
Well, recently I've had a lot of questions from trainers about how they can transition their current clients from private to group training… here's a few tips…
1. Make your group training about 20%-25% less than your private training prices, so if you normally charge $60 for private sessions, charge an average of $45-$49 for your group workouts ( this is PER PERSON for groups of 4-6 people, for boot camps make your prices around 30%-50% of your private session prices)

2. Position group training as the "best" kind of training around, you can touch on points like how much more fun the workouts are, the camaraderie of the groups, how the energy lifts everyone up, the competitiveness which makes it hard to slack off, how they'll have more flexibility in their scheduling and how they'll be able to train with their friends if they want to.
NEVER position it as budget training, even though it does save them money, position it as the best way to get into shape. ( You need to believe this as well, not just them)

3. Don't ASK your clients to do it, just tell them this is how you're going to be doing it now… remember, YOU are the authority here, and just like a doctor PRESCRIBES a solution, you too PRESCRIBE the solution… if you lose 5% of your client base, no biggie, you'll end up making WAY more in the long run WHILE working fewer hours.
( You can always outsource some of that 5% to another trainer if you want)

4. Whatever you need to do to make it happen, make your group workouts super fun, so people will enjoy them much more than your private sessions.

5. Remember, YOU need to believe in your group workouts, cuz if you don't they won't either… NEVER apologize for training groups, always be in the "vibe" of this is the best way to get into shape.

6. Get the Group Training Exploder System to help build your entire six-figure group training business, you can get it here: http://www.GroupTrainingExploder.com

Comments on Switching Your Clients From Private Training to Group Training
Hey Chris
Nice info and by the look of it another great product. I think the best point of this post is not to ask but to tell your clients what the solution to their problem is.
People come to us wanting a clear direction. By having the balls to look your clients in the eye with conviction and tell them "this is what you need", you WILL develop a clear respect and authority.
Much better than finishing a sentence with "so what do you think is best…." You would be surprised how many times I hear trainers tack that onto the end of their half-arsed sales pitch.
Keep the good stuff coming.
Rick
Umm…nice pictures?!
Man I am there! Will be purchasing the Group Training Exploder program next week and very much looking forward to making the switch.
Chris, I posted a couple of questions on Zach's recent post… Would it be possible for you to check them out?
Love the photos too man, makes reading a blog post much more interesting, although I am slightly concerned with your apparent obsession with photos of scantily clad chicks!
Just kidding mate, the more the merrier…
I realised this morning while training a couple of clients that I am getting bored with 1-on-1 (as Zach mentions in his post) and group training and small private group training is definitely the way forward.
Have a wicked day mate.

Being a CrossFit gym owner I really dig the pics Chris – that's good stuff bro. 'Cept for the fat dudes – yikes!
Group training is so much better for several reasons.
1. It's a lot more fun to have many people training at once. If youre a coach with great energy then everyone feeds off of you.
2. It's a great way to leverage your time and thus earn more money doing what you love.
3. It breeds healthy competition between clients that drives the lower performers to step it up and also keeps the fire-breathers on their toes because they never know who might catch them.
For me group training has been where it's at. Group training isnt for everyone and I know Im not trying to appeal to everyone. I make it clear from the start our's is a serious group lookin' for great people who want great coaching and I dont have time for people who are driven and really want to be there.
Great post Chris keep it up bruddah!
Hi Chris,
This post comes just at the right time for me. I'm the trainer who's been slogging 80 hours a week and still barely getting by. Today's events emphasized exactly why I'm transitioning from one-on-one to small group training – we had a horrible blizzard in Winnipeg this morning and of course, several clients decide to cancel out on me. With small group, even if one doesn't show, I still get paid.
That's reason enough.
Keep up those great posts.

This sounds like a great product, can't wait to see more testimonials!
Hmmm interesting info Chris.
Particuarly as I have been thinking of starting something like this recently. I run bootcamps and everyone is asking when the next one is but until the weather gets better and the evenings get lighter (in the uk!) it's just too damn dangerous.
I do however have access to a friends PT studio/powerplate studio so thinking this may bide my time for a while plus give me something new to try. i like new challenges.
The concept however confuses me and I think would confuse my clients. For a start group training doesn't have the same ring to it as bootcamp does it? How should I market this differently to bootcamp if I am to charge a higher rate? coz surely both concept should achieve great results?
If their are any trainers out their running successful group training sessions I would be very grateful for any tips!!!
and likewise pass on any bootcamp tips.
Will look into your new product too Chris!!!
Hey Chris
Thanks for the great post! I am certainly slowly moving one-on-one training to group training. It's just so much more effective in terms of results and income.
When I set out to become a trainer I found Chris over a year ago and from day one I focused on group training and it has made my business what it is today. I have only trained a few clients one-on-one over the past few months but I'm still making more money than most trainers in my area. Everything you read in this post is 100% true and you should follow Chris' advice. Thanks Chris.
