Hey there, hope you’re doing awesome
When I first built my fitness training business back in around good ol’ two thousand and three… I did ZERO marketing.
All I had was two clients, a place to train them and a passion for getting people into shape.
I didn’t even have an email account, a website, a computer or even one single advertisement ANYWHERE.
I was worried I was gonna have to give up on my dream of owning a successful fitness business and have to go get a regular ol’ day job.
And that’s when I met my bruddha Steve Hochman who was making over $200,000 a year and got every single one of his clients from referrals. He shared his secrets with me and I put em’ to work in my business.
Plus I went and read every book on ‘referrals’ I could get my hands on.
I tried just about every way to get referrals you can possibly try, if it’s out there, I tried it. I had to weed through a ton of B.S. but was able to find a handful of reliable strategies that produced some pretty incredible results.
And in just a few short months I went from just two paying clients to over fifty, creating a strong six-figure training business for myself …
And it was built 100% from personal referrals. ( This is long before I figured out how to use the internet to pull in clients… and like I said, at this time I didn’t even have my own computer… in fact I’d have to go to the local library every Friday to check out the newest updates on T-nation )
Personal referrals are the fastest, easiest and most affordable way to build a six-figure fitness training business…
And they usually cost little or nothing to get, plus referred clients are usually better clients then ones that come in from advertising AND they tend to be better at referring people themselves.
Make sure not to leave your referral marketing plan up to just chance, hoping for the random referral.
You should have a systematic strategy that allows you get referrals pretty much every single day, and if you aren’t getting referrals almost everyday, then there’s a good chance you’re doing something wrong… it’s ok, it’s not your fault
It’s not like the big certification companies teach this stuff or anything
Here’s just 12 of my favorite referral getting strategies…
1. Pre-condition your clients to get you clients from the very first workout
2. Make getting referrals for you a condition of doing business with you… meaning you’ll ONLY work with people willing to get you referrals… this also ads a level of confidence in your pitch that most trainers just don’t have, so it will help separate you from all the other trainers other there.
3. Systematically ASK for referrals on an ongoing basis… and make sure to ask at the right times… timing is everything here
4. Train a minimum of 30 Human Billboard Clients
5. Implement the weekly “Bring a Friend Day” … like “Bring a Friend Fridays”
6. Reward your clients when they to refer to you
7. Publicly recognize your clients when they refer to you
8. Send clients balloons at work whenever they reach milestones in their fitness goals ( works best if they work in a busy office )
9. Use Hochman’s Magnetic Card strategy
10. Make your workouts fun, like insanely fun
11. Expand your circle of influence, the bigger the better
12. Build your own referral karma bank account up as big as you can get it
Those strategies, when done properly and in a systematic fashion, along with about a dozen other strategies, should get you referrals just about every single day.
