Personal Trainer Marketing Guest Post by Clayton Webber
Need more clients really quickly?
Want to get some back that are no longer training with you?
And give your clients value at the same time, without breaking the budget on marketing and advertising?
This is how I do it…
At the start of this year I was determined to give back more to my clients, for no other reason than I am grateful for their business and that I have a sincere belief and attitude that says you can never do too much for your clients.
This short paragraph from Jim Rohn pretty much sums it up better than I could ever do:
“All in all, what we want to do is to help others. Zig Ziglar says that if we will “help others get what they want, we will in turn get what we want.” If we want to be successful, we should consider ourselves servants of other people. What can we do to help them and make them better? This is the true path to greatness and success, not only in business but in life!”
Here are some simple but very effective offers that truly are win/win situations that build your client base quickly:
Offer #1. Existing clients – Gift voucher to give away to family or friends.
I did this just last month and signed up 6 new clients within a 2 week period. The offer was for a 1 hour consultation plus 5 x 30 minute sessions for just $50. They could either give the voucher to family or friends or they could pay me directly and give it as a gift. Simple.

Offer #2. Previous clients who have stopped training with you in the last 6 months or so.
Very similar to offer #1, but just a different price point. This time, I offered 5 x 30 minute sessions for $100 with no consultation required as they had trained with me previously. Again, 3 more “new” clients in a week or so.
Offer #3. Birthday offer for the upcoming month – I get this ready towards the end of every month.
This is pretty much the same as offer #2 but not all clients are created equal and you need to know how to approach some of them from a different angle.
You could just use this offer alone to bring back previous clients with minimal expense.
I offer this at $100 for 5 x 30 minute sessions instead of the normal $225 price.

Offer #4. Free sessions for those clients who referred a friend or family that have signed up for full paying sessions.
2 free sessions for each person/referral. This goes back to the quote from Jim Rohn and a well known business and life principle – give stuff away for free. If you are struggling in your business or life in general, find a way to add value to someone else’s life and just see what happens.
Big Chris talks about this all the time for good reason. It works!
Offer #5. Dinner offer for all those who have referred someone whether they signed up or not. This is a random draw and winner announced by newsletter, something I do every month to spoil my clients.
This applies to offer #1 and also to new clients who in turn refer someone also, which does happen all the time. For this month I am giving away a $300 dinner to one of the best restaurants (and my favorite) in the area. In fact, the food is so good, you could fly here, sleep it off as you would need to after an 8 course meal with wines to match, and then get back on a plane the next day a very happy customer indeed.
I haven’t really asked my clients for referrals in the past as I haven’t really needed to, but this year I planned to take my business to another level and clients were more than happy to refer friends and family when I offered.
I used some basic templates for marketing offers (see above) that are given to members of Fitness Network Australia and added some text in Photoshop. You can Google something similar or get someone you know to make them for you if you aren’t too tech savvy yourself or don’t have time.
Results
The results were that I signed up 10 new clients in a 2 week period plus several more who are still completing their trial offer, and I train mostly 1-on-1 (not for much longer!) so that amounts to a pretty significant increase in my client base and of course cash flow. And as these were “bonus” clients, I offered them all 24 week block payments up front to inject some cash into another business I have. Perfect.
You could modify this to suit your boot camp or group training business in any number of ways, and to suit your own prices, etc.
Would love to hear your results with something like this or other ways you are marketing to your existing or previous client base… just leave a comment in the comment section below.

Great post Clayton! And I agree you definitely have to give to get!
Hey Chris, do you recommend any good marketing books? I read feel the fear and do it anyway, along with all dale carnegie books you referred. I want to learn more about what makes people tick. I'd appreciate it.
Thanks
Chuck
Hey Chuck, here ya go: http://www.kickbacklife.com/2009/05/24/my-favorite-books/
Always great to see Aussies leading the way with great ideas. Thanks for sharing Clayton, given me a running head start.
Cheers.
Thanks for the great comments guys, I really enjoyed putting together this post and appreciate the feedback.
Chuck: That post by Chris is pretty spot on and you would be hard pressed to find a more comprehensive list.
One book that really sticks in my mind, while not specifically related to marketing is "Trading in the Zone" by Mark Douglas. There is a chapter in his book that relates to the energy behind a persons beliefs, and why people are literally compelled to do things most of the time even without knowing it.
I day trade and psychology is the most important part of it, although pretty much everything we do is, so well worth checking out.
Cheers, Clayton
Hey Clayton
Awesome post mate

Hey Clayton,
Awesome post mate and some great ideas indeed.
I am also in Aus, are you heading to Filex next week mate? I am heading up to present this year which is cool.
Be great to catch up, I am wanting to set up a group of like minded Fitness Professional Aussies and maybe look at a Fitness Summit like what Bedros and Chris have done in USA at some stage, and it would be great to have you be part of the team I want to assemble.
Let me know if you are coming just shoot me an email to scott@succeed.com.au
Cheers
Here's one thing: give any client who QUITS a free gift…just send them an e-mail that gives them a link to an opt-in free bonus e-book as a goodbye gift…then you've a LIST to go after "previous clients"…
Cheers,
Ben at http://www.trainfortopdollar.com
