Local Fitness Rockstar Strategy

A Fitness Blogging and Internet Marketing Guest Post from Jonas Deffes

Enjoy this guest post from one of my first ever coaching clients, six-figure trainer and “out-of-the-box” renegade Jonas Deffes…

How does a guy in a band become a local fitness Rockstar?

I have no freaking clue… because I’m not in a FREAKING BAND and I look nothing like a Fitness Pro!

But oddly enough I became a six-figure trainer with hundreds of women in my boot camps because I broke the mold on what 99% of the fitness industry thinks trainers should look like, talk like and market like

Here’s how I did it…

1. Break the mold…

Even though I never had a big fat gut or been “out of shape” … I was very hesitant to getting in the fitness industry as a trainer because I don’t have those big bulging biceps or road map veins all over my body.

Well, good thing because none of that stuff really matters… unless you make it matter to yourself… Shit, I got messy hair… a scruffy face and look NOTHING like a fitness pro.. and to be honest, I get more people asking me if I sell weed or if I’m some sort of cult-leader

People will find something to relate to you about… It’s best to let them think whatever they want about you and when they found out that you are really a undercover businessman with a 6 figure operation going on.. they will be that much more impressed.

2. Don’t do what everyone else is doing…

Be creative on how you structure your fitness program… find a portal or way to connect to your clients even more with a free membership site or kick ass fitness blog. ( Blogging has been HUGE for me)

Create different programs for your clients to join that give them a greater since of value such as VIP, Gold or Platinum levels or better yet… start to theme your programs that make even more people connect to you!

3. Be a marketer, not just a trainer…

Big Chris has always laid the hammer down on this one…

You could be the next big thing since swiss cheese but if nobody knows who you are then your shit outta luck.

Watch the expert marketers like Chris and see how he does it… Follow those in your industry who are killing it and simply model yourself after them… remember… success leaves clues, and lots of them.

4. Be YOU…

…Don’t try be that under armor pro trainer…. If you wear body armor all day and you are not a pro football player then please stop… it’s probably causing more people to run away then you think.

And don’t want to give a shit what anyone thinks, this goes for me as well

Hell, I spent many days worrying my ass off about what people think of me and how they try to copy everything I do when running my fitness program.

It’s going to happen regardless if you are successful or not, and the more successful you are, the harder they’ll try

Other trainers will TRY to copy you… but the cool thing is they can’t…. while they’re super busy trying to copy you… you’re already 10 steps ahead creating something new or developing a new marketing funnel.

5. Develop marketing systems to funnel people into your program and retain them for as long as possible…

Systems are amazing.

They make things work, they make things automated, they can also make you a good amount of money if you do it correctly… but you need to realize that even systems need to be updated and tweaked to fit your growing business.

Here’s one of my favorite systems…

First, using your blog as well as squeeze pages, offer an ethical bribe to build a responsive email list of people who are interested in your solutions to their problems

Then, email your list with high-quality, entertaining, informative content… the best way to do this is by having this content on your blog

Then, have your blog posts do different levels of selling ( soft and hard) for your training/boot camps… whatever it is your selling

Your blog will help people to know, like and trust you… and that’s super important if you wanna make the sale

6. Another thing is you learn how to blog FOR your clients… not for you…

Learn how to talk to your clients… talk their language and talk about what interests them… help solve their problems and make their life better… this is a big one..

It’s good to have a little attitude and personality when you speak to them and make sure not to sound corporate or too professional

Be human

Be complex

Be a mystery… the mystery with all the short-cuts and secrets

Being a mystery is always more interesting them being a overwhelming bundle of open box joy… that’s cool if you teach woo-woo stuff and are in the metaphysical market, but it doesn’t work for most trainers… cuz it’s not real

Give them chance to put the pieces together on who YOU are… because if you let them do it… they will see you as a high-authority Fitness Superstar Guru… and will pay you lots of money to solve their “fitness problem”

Your blog is the place to do this, it’s by far one of the most indispensable tools a fitness trainer can have these days… any trainer without one just isn’t that serious about reaching the high six or seven figure level.

Trying to be an in-demand fitness expert without a blog is like trying to watch Avatar on an old black and white screen tv… it just ain’t gonna do the job

7. And last but not least… Learn how to use big f*cking arrows (figure of speech) that point people in the direction you want them to go.

It’s been my experience that people need to be directed

Tell them exactly what to do ( click here, buy now, register here, etc.)

And show them where to go ( like with a big red arrow) – arrow’s are powerful in getting the job done without even having to feel pushy or salesy.

I’d love to hear your comments below in the comment section.

______________________________

Hey there, it’s Big Chris…

For the last year and a half or so I’ve been getting slammed with questions by fitness trainers, boot camp instructors, studio owners and fitness info-gurus about blogging.

And it’s no wonder… they’ve all seen what blogging has done for my business and the lifestyle it’s provided for my family, it doesn’t take very much time, and it’s the closest thing to getting paid for goofing-off that I can think of

There simple is nothing out there that can give you the credibility, authority, and ability to get and keep clients and customers like a blog can… IF it’s done properly.

The problem is, most people have no idea how to do it… no worries, it’s super easy and I’m more than happy to help you out.

And if you don’t like writing, you can always make your blog video based ( Video blogs are super fun btw, and hardly take any time at all)

Nothing can help build your brand, your business and your bank account like a high-authority fitness blog… and I’m gonna help you every step of the way…

You see, for the last six months I’ve been working on a step-by-step, in-depth, walk-you-by-the-hand-program to help you use a simple yet highly effective Authority Blog, to become one of the most well known, highest-paid, most sought after fitness experts around

It’s called Fitness Blogging Profits and will be opening next Tues May 18th at 9am PST

One question I have is do you write your own blog posts or do you outsourse it and how do you keep it entertaining without boring your readers with the same old fitness shit.

    Greg

  8. Jonas is THE man, the most humble dude I ever met. We chilled for a while in Disney after Bedros' event and Jonas and I chatted on life and biz and family….

The guy is as genuine as they come and it doesn't shock me that he kicks major ass.

I'm honored to know the bro!

Damn it Big Chris I want the Fitness Blogging Profits NOW. I can't wait to get my hands on it bro. Seriously, you are the "blogging" master.

I have all your products Chris and every single one has surpassed my expectation and I am sure this one will be not be different.

  11. Systems are huge and one of the most important aspects of your business. If you don't have systems you are always running around like a chicken with its head cut off. Plus when you have the systems set up you can pay other people to do them or just barter with people and give them free training. I've started doing that and it leaves more time for me to either put more time into money making activites or just sit back and relax.

Be a marketer and not just a trainer has always been a big one for me to get past and its turning around very quickly now. Always heard Bedros say the same thing as well, you are a marketer, your product is fitness. Thats made a big difference in the success of my business.

  12. Great post Jonas. Some really good pieces of advice. It's ironic that as trainers we spend most our time marketing. But that's the only way we can get our "great content" in front of millions of people!

  13. Drew Baye says:

I've known Jonas for a few years and he's the real deal – a genuinely nice guy with a sharp mind for business. And awesome sideburns.

  14. Great stuff Jonas!

  15. Mike N. says:

Jonas, this is great information and sharing it openly and freely says a lot. To everyone else, Jonas is the real deal and wants you to be successful! He spent over an hour late one evening mentoring me on how I could leverage my professional experience to start my own business. Although I am not in the fitness industry his insights and guidance are helping me take control of my future. Thank you Jonas I truly appreciate and value your mentorship.

    Mike N.

  16. Thats a great post, especially the part about being "you". I have people try to copy me every day, even putting classes on same day and time and calling them the same thing…CRAZY!

    Dale

  17. Hristo says:

    Zach…he got you fooled:)

@Christian..I checked out your blog.. it's NICE and got some great content, but make sure you tell people to Comment at the bottom of each of your blog post..doing that makes a huge difference in getting comments…use those arrows and tell them what to do ;)

@Casey..thanks for the complement. you got some good marketing tips on your your blog!

@Greg Crawford.. a lot of times my boot camp clients will ask you questions in person right after class about health and fitness, exercises, life, problems ect. Turn those questions into blog posts and emails..free content brudah

@Drew Baye.. good to hear from you bro! You have a intense blog and niche following..you could literally blow it off the charts with Chris's Fitness blogging profits…especially with your new book coming out!

@Dale Buchanan… hey bro I believe it! It sucks when it happens and it's hard just to ignore it when it's right in our faces.. you're a original dude and rocking it Dale..I love your site man!

@Hristo…don't hate because i got better hair then you ;)

  19. Nice one Jonas! I like the arrows part, people do need direction, shit even I do. Good point, if you push people in the right direction, you make more money, you just have to do it without people feeling like they are being pushed.

    Doug

  20. Jonas!

Awesome post man – you're one of the coolest dudes that I've ever met over the phone.

And it's funny seeing that 3rd pic in your post. When Leanne showed your picture during her FBS presentation… I heard someone next to me whisper: "he looks like Jesus"

  21. Jonas says:

@Michael Duivis……….. Thanks Mike, I always like hearing about how much you been rocking it our boot camp mastermind..very motivating!

About that 3rd pic of me…I dunno man..whenever i grow my hair out I just happen to get that "Jesus" look..I though it would be a cool pic to show my daughter when she gets older lol..

You know whats Crazy….when you think about it Jesus is probably the best marketer that ever lived..that guy had some serious mass control :)
