A Fitness Video Blogging Guest Post by Zach Even-Esh
For fitness trainers who don’t like to write, or would prefer to use video, video blogging is the way to go… in fact some say it’s superior… Zach Even-esh is one of the dudes who would say that, I mean, his video blog is responsible for most of his income ( and he does very well ) … so he’s DEFINITELY a guy you wanna listen to…
Here’s Part 2 of what Zach Even-Esh has to say about video blogging

I’ll let Zach take it from here…
Ok… Right now my email list is around 14,000. But I have two kids. My wife hasn’t worked for two years. I’m selling my house and I’m buying a house double the price. Literally I’ll be able to ride my bike to the beach.
I’ve done that with a pretty small list.
But number one thing I do is those people on my list, those people that watch my blog, I love them.
Like, no shit.
I love them and I really want to give them all my best. And that is something that you have to do. I mean, this goes way beyond fitness for me.
For me what’s deep in my heart is I don’t want people going through what I went through.
I don’t want them depressed.
If they’re in debt like I was, I want them out of debt.
If they’re like me, having to work so much the past few years, it put a huge strain on my relationship with my wife and my kids. I don’t ever want people to have to fight through that. I want to kind of intervene before they get to that point and teach them to really get out there and go for it and do it.
So I’m kind of — it sounds crazy. I’m not trying to play God or anything. But I just don’t want people going through the pain of what I went through to learn this. And I kind of feel like this is what I was put on earth for….
I was put on earth to teach people how to be strong and to give people the tools to do what they love.
And they may not want to open a warehouse gym, but they may want to go and achieve this one thing that they always dreamed of. And rather than dreaming the life, they live the dreams.
Because my big thing was I always wanted to open a gym and I always wanted to live my life like summer vacation where I was kind of playing all day and I didn’t have the alarm clock.
You know what I mean?
I look back to those days of being a kid over summer vacation and now I’m doing it again. So I want people to get that experience.
Chris, you know one of the cool things about you and me… We’re two guys that make a full-time income from a blog have no technical skills whatsoever.
And now about list building and making money…
A lot of people are coming to me from Facebook these days.
A lot of people are sharing the videos. I notice that whenever I share my videos, other people are doing it. And I also have a very good — a very powerful gift. So when people sign up they get a free e-book and three free videos that are really kick-ass videos.
And I’m constantly encouraging people to share what I do.
I don’t say it like that; I don’t say “share what I do.” I’m like, “We’ve got to build the Underground movement. Let’s get people out of those f*ckin’ pussy gyms and welcome them to the Underground Strength world. So if you’ve got a friend that’s going to New York Sports Club or RetroFitness, tell them to cut their gym membership and send them right here.”
And basically — whenever I’m lost, Chris, you know what I do?
I go to YouTube and I go watch “Fight Club,” where Brad Pitt’s telling that dude — he’s like, “This is f*ckin’ Fight Club.” He’s like, “The eight rules of Fight Club.” And he’s telling the other dude, he’s like, “You’re too fat. Stand outside.” They created that subculture.
So whenever I’m trying to figure out what I’m doing and how to monetize it, I’m creating the family. And what I want is for dudes to be — there’s going to be like f*ckin’ people at playgrounds like ripping stones apart. And from the corner of their eye they give each other that nod because they know that somehow, boom, Zach Even-Esh of the Underground kind of opened up their eyes to that stuff.
And obviously through every blog post — not every one, but the majority of them — I might embed a link or there’s a P.S. kind of letting them know that the product or the course or the seminar that I’m offering is going to answer their question or give them the answer to their problem.
So for the person that has that shitty job I say, boom, “And if you want to learn how you could walk away from a full-time job with health insurance and start doing what you love, the way to start doing that is you say ‘f*ck it’ and you come to my seminar, because now is the time.”
So I’m very motivating and encouraging and telling them, boom, these are the steps you need to take. I’m learning in a way to give them — empowering them and giving them instructions on what they must do.
So people are attending my seminars. I’ve got a lot of DVDs. But mostly I focus on one e-book, my membership website, and my seminar/certification/mentorship program.
The message is always pretty common as far as where they’re going to get the answers to live the life of their dreams from.
So that’s basically how I monetize it.
And I’ll tell you, the sales — like, I have images on the side of my blog. I think people, they watch my videos more but they don’t buy stuff or do stuff until you tell them, “This is what you need to do. You need to click on this link, sign up for my mentorship course, and I will see you there. I’m going to give you the tools to change your life or at least triple your income.”
So I give specific instructions as to what they need to do.
And also, most important, Chris, is you’ve got to walk the talk. I wouldn’t be able to sell what I do if my athletes weren’t kicking the crap out of people, if I wasn’t having a real successful life. I can’t promote how to become a millionaire really if I’m not a millionaire yet. You know what I’m saying? So you have to be able to walk the talk.
And that’s what I tell trainers. Hey, if you’re going to train people, you’ve got to look the part. You’ve got to look the part. You’ve got to walk the talk.
Chris McCombs teaches people how to freakin’ make a shit ton of money. You make a shit ton of money and you don’t even work a full day half of the time. So it makes it easier for people to trust you when you’re the real deal.
And here’s one thing for most people starting out — and preferably I’d like to say for like six months you should do this, but at the least three months — is Monday through Friday you have a blog post.
I would say that at least three of those days should be video, but five days a week you’re blog posting and it’s all free content.
You’re not creating programs or ads or anything — or affiliate marketing, nothing.
You are focused on delivering awesome content, answering questions on your blog and being just the coolest chick or the coolest dude in town and killing it.
And a huge thing — like, Joe DeFranco had that Ask Joe section on his website for years. And he was very nervous when we recorded our seminar. I said, “Dude, we’re going to sell that for $297.”
I don’t think he ever sold anything more than like $47 or $49 on his website. He was like, “I don’t know if we can do that.”
I was like, “Dude, for I don’t know –” I said, “Tell me how many hours you think you’ve spent on Ask Joe,” which is free. He starts thinking.
He’s like, well — he starts looking at the years then two hours a day on the Internet. He’s like, 10,000 hours. Ten thousand hours, he tells me.
I go, “10,000 hours. Has anybody paid for that awesome content?” Not only is it awesome, it is inspirational, educational, a lot of times it’s funny.
He goes, “No.”
I go, “Shut up, then. It’s been like five years you’ve been killing it.”
We released the product. It was $297. What did he say? He took 50 of them. So, man, in like 72 hours he made $10,000. It was the first time he made five figures. And I said, “See, dude? Now you can go f*ckin’ take care of all that shit you had to do with your condo.” But he was so sweating it out.
But for me, I had also been giving so much killer content, so much awesome information, that when I came out with it I said, “No, there is no payment plan.” The sales copy was super short. It was a video of me and Joe in front of his gym.
I held up the DVDs in front of us. We spoke for five minutes what it was about. Then we toured his gym a little bit. Then we did a highlight of the seminar with some kick-ass music. Then the other video had testimonials. And then I had a couple paragraphs of information. And that shit sold like crazy and I made the $10,000 and then I f*ckin’ bought a big-ass fence to go around the house.
The whole thing was everybody that comes to me — not everybody, but beginners – they want to sell, sell, sell. No. Number one, care.
Show the love. I know it sounds gay and it sounds like a bunch of woo-woo shit, but I genuinely care and I want to see people succeed so bad.
Oftentimes I want to see other people succeed more than they want to succeed. Like, I really get on people that attend my mentorship and my mentorship weekend. And they’re not paying me to coach them or anything but I’m e-mailing them like, “Dude, did you put up your three videos this week? Have you gone out and hustled? Have you gotten in front of people?” People need to have — you’ve got to create that family.
You’ve got to show that you care.
And if people think — a lot of times, Chris, people are like, “Oh, who wants to watch me? Who’s going to relate to me?” Trust me. People will relate to you.
When I started my blog I was coming out — my personality was very crazy. I’m like, I play a lot of jokes. I joke around a lot. I’m very hyper. I get extremely emotional about stuff. I saw other people tried doing that. They saw I came out with Underground Strength Show so they were coming out with the XYZ Show. And they’re like, “Hey, it’s John Smith,” and that wasn’t them. And because that wasn’t them, their blog bombed.
You’ve got to be you. And trust me, people will connect with you, whatever personality you are. And they should be — so if you’re the new guy or the new girl, I’m talking a minimum of three months, preferably four, five, six months of just tons of free content, engaging on other people’s blogs, dropping comments all the time, and engaging on other high-activity forums, delivering kick-ass content.
Not like, “Hey, if I were you I would do five sets of five. If you want more info, go to ZachEven-Esh.com.” No. I’m talking you to go that forum, you drop like three paragraphs of awesome information. And then in your byline it says ZachEven-Esh.com, or whatever your byline is.
And then five, six months down the road you’ve got your blog pumping and you’re like, “Yo, dudes. These are the kettlebells I use.” And then you link it up and you’re like, “I keep getting all these questions for you guys and, hey, man, I’m being dead honest with you guys. This is the kettlebells that I love. It’s the best price, the best quality. These are the ones I use. If you want to tear it up, boom, you could take a look at that link below.” So you’re not doing — everything is a soft sale. But in the first three to six months you should not be trying to sell anything.
You should be focusing on building that community
If I was training at the gym, I would record my entire hour workout and say all kinds of shit to the camera and that gave me video for two weeks. So it was very easy to create video for it. I’d just save all the videos on an external hard drive that I bought from Costco and I used Windows Movie –
I have a Mac for two months. All I know how to do on that Mac is surf the Internet. I can’t even f*ckin’ figure out anything else on that thing. So people are smarter than me. Guaranteed.
But you have to care. And I can’t do the caring for you. You’ve got to genuinely want people to win and you want to help them. And if you could show that, you’ll stand out in this industry because, dude, there’s a lot of boring stuff out there.
***People need to bust out their personalities.
Chris, I said it before and I’ll say it again… you’re my brother… I’m really indebted to you and I really hope that everybody listening — if you follow Chris’s advice, there’s just no way that you can’t win.
And Chris is a big reason why I was able to leave my job, which was a real high-paying job, and he gave me the confidence.
Listening to Chris and everything on his blog and invest in his program you will win absolutely.
And anybody listening, if they want me to do any Q&A with Chris to help out — whatever Chris asks me to help you guys out with, I’ll do it. You mention his name, it’s like gold to me.

Just a few days ago I launched a new A – Z program for fitness pros who want to build their business, their brand and their bank account’
For the last year and a half or so I’ve been getting slammed with questions by fitness trainers, boot camp instructors, studio owners and fitness info-gurus about blogging.
And it’s no wonder, they’ve all seen what blogging has done for my business and the lifestyle it’s provided for my family, it doesn’t take very much time, and it’s the closest thing to getting paid for goofing-off that I can think of

Hey man this is terrific! I got this sent to me from someone after I read a blog post on Tim Ferriss' blog and left a comment about being my authentic self online. I had posted something that my dad had said was inappropriate for facebook. So, I removed it. I didn't feel right about removing it because I truly got a kick out of it and was laughing from it. He thought otherwise and said that people would look down on me as a business professional for sharing that.
It's a fine line and i've been trying to walk it, this definitely helps me realize that I am who I am and people will love me for it, and people will hate me for it. I'd much rather spend my time with the people who love me for it.
What a great post- Zach is the man and it shows on his blog how much he cares about what he does. Gotta be YOU and just stop giving a shit what other people will think. I need to do MORE video and just keep putting out content, instead of worrying about writing the coolest/latest article, etc.. Videos are way more fun and require less time.
If I can take one thing away from this post; just keep hustling and genuinely care about your readers, clients, athletes, etc.
Great post Zach and Chris. I will begin filming on a regular basis and majority of blog posts will contain some form of video!
Excellent as always, Zach. Great job.
