Here's Zach Even-Esh's Rules for Business….
1) Low Hassle, High Profit – I learned this when I first began getting into the business from Ryan Lee & Jimmy "Pickles" Labadie.
I HATE headaches or in plain English, anything that isn't fun or doesn't make me happy I don't care how much money it brings me, I kick it to the curb and give it a "NO."
I still remember having a $3,000 lunch with a VERY popular business man. I told him I wanted my gym to make 10 Grand a month and he said I should bite the bullet and train some high paying house wives, I said "NO F**ING way!!" He was shocked.
I told him I experienced enough unhappiness and pain in my life to last a life time, I don't need one ounce more of it.
This is also why I turn down engagements to travel around the world and hop on planes. I am not a fan of flying and neither am I a fan of traveling extensively away from my family. The town I live in is a vacation town anyway so why travel. I'd rather make less money, say NO to others and YES to my family.
2) Create Synergistic Businesses – I NEVER create a business that only brings me a return in one form.
For example, my gym, The Underground Strength Gym allows me to leverage all the activity inside of there, in turn, giving me multiple businesses as a result, requiring very little extra effort on my part.
My gym allows me to provide content for my blog, it has allowed me to provide content for a niche web site where the followers are CRAZY hungry for my information, I can produce training DVDs, Manuals, E Books, My Certification, Business Coaching and Mastermind Groups ALL from what happens through the success of my gym.
3) Breakfast with my Wife & Kids – When I was working my ass off, struggling to go full time as a biz owner, I would wake up while everyone was sleeping, make breakfast and eat while working in my office, BEFORE I went to my job. By the time I got home, after running my gym, it was LATE, sometimes so late that my wife and kids were already asleep.
I HATED IT!
I felt like a dead beat Dad and I was getting furious with myself. I was on the verge of losing my mind and the pain I felt as a father and husband not being able to spend time with the people I love and cared for most hurt like hell.
There is NOTHING better than waking up to my kids and taking care of my family in the morning.
4) If it's NOT Fun, I'm NOT Doin' It! - I used to LOVE teaching. BUT, as administration changed, parents changes and teaching as a whole changed, there was NO fun in it anymore. The big pay check, health insurance, pension and all the bells and whistles didn't cancel out the fact that it was NOT fun.
Whatever I do, there must be Fun, Happiness and Good Times ALL rolled into one or I'm not in it.
I used to drive to my job blasting the radio and singing. My job became a depressing place because of administration and all my co workers walked around mopey and depressed. It SUCKED so I said F**K it, time to GO!
5) Don't Wait for Perfection - I NEVER wait for perfection. I go when it's good enough and make things better as I go. I act faster than everyone else and I learned this from my younger days of not approaching hot girls and then some ugly Dude picked up the hot girl.

The clock is ALWAYS tickin' so if a good idea comes around it's time to GO for it!
6) NO A**Holes - When I was a wrestling coach and a teacher I was at the mercy of all these rules and was FORCED to give rude people, lazy people, mean people and all types of assholes 2nd, 3rd and a million other chances.
I hated feeling like a slave to people who showed no manners and no respect yet they felt everyone had to bow down to them.
F**K that
I run a tight ship at my gym. If you're lazy, rude or intrusive or bother me or my athletes in a negative manner you are OUT.
I do the same from a business perspective… if I work harder and always out hustle you yet you gave me your word in business, I bail, no matter how much money is left on the table, assholes just can't pay me enough.
7) NO Weekends – I don't work on weekends unless it's one of my certifications or mastermind groups. I spent enough time away from my wife and kids so my weekends are NOW spent at the beach, or kicking back, hanging out and spending quality time with friends and family.
This also pushes me to get a LOT of sh*t done during the week.
8 ) Start Small – I am a BIG believer in keeping overhead of all types LOW and starting small.
I want to be cash positive from the get go.
I have heard of gym owners and business owners who are NOT cash positive after one year. NOT cool. I prefer to start small and give 110% awesome attention to that business and make it GREAT as I grow, rather than having a HUGE business where the service is average at best. I call this living on "nuts & berries" – Gene Simmons simply calls this living below your means.
Although I start small, once I get the ball rolling I move extremely fast and aggressively allowing me to grow my business very successfully and fully under my control.
9) Scare Yourself - If I'm not scared of my goals, aspirations and what's ahead of me them I ain't pushing the business hard enough or fast enough.
I believe in having BALLS and being a bit risky in business and doing what others won't do.
Babe Ruth was the Home Run King but he was always the strike out King…. Ya gotta swing for the fences!!
10) Lifestyle Design FIRST - Alwyn Cosgrove taught this to me FIRST, before Time Ferriss!
He told me to outline all my expenses and bills and then create a business that supported my lifestyle.
Sure, we all wanna make a million dollars but we don't need to make a million to live a kick ass lifestyle.
On the flip side, I have VERY clear cut goals about what I want my life to look like, how much money I want to earn and how I plan to make that income.
Because of these very clear goals I have done EVERYTHING I have ever wanted. I LIVE by these RULES and have NO fear pushing the envelope and making it ALL happen.
11) Genuinely, 110 % CARE About YOUR Clients – Welcome to the REAL world. In a nut shell, the kids I train at my gym I treat as if they are my own. I am tough on them and show tough love, so when I have to lay the law down I do it. I do it because I care, not because I wanna demonstrate macho bullshit jock talk.
Ask the guys who attend my certification.
It's a small course, and we become a very tight knit group over the course of 2 or 3 days. I have the cell phone of some of these guys and call them at random and speak the honest truth to them about what they need to do to kick ass in their business and represent for their family.
I don't care if I train pro athletes or not. I prefer the kids who are weak and getting their ass kicked yet have the most intense desire in the world to train and go through hell.
With my internet business I LOVE the stories of guys who pulled themselves out of depression or addiction and made a come back by training themselves and others and reconnecting with their family.
To this day, probably my favorite video comes from one of the guys who won the first ever Underground Strength Coach Inspiration Contest. I was not a big fan of who had 6 pack abs, instead, I wanted to see who turned their life around through training and was able to Pay it Forward.
If you REALLY deliver and REALLY care about the services you give your clients, you will get videos like this one:

Hi Chris, hope all is well.
Great post by Zach. I love how he emphasizes "Family" and "Fun". These should always be among the top of our priorities. Also, his point #2 about creating Synergistic Businesses (around the primary business) is very helpful.
Thanks again for sharing great content.
Dr. George
Excellent info and inspiration, Zach! But from you, I wouldn't expect anything less. No matter how long it takes, work hard towards your goals. Make it real! Make your reality!

Hey Chris/Zach thanks for the post.
I am a big believer of No. '6) NO A**Holes'

This rocks. Especially #1 and #6. Might be the best post ever
Dale
Nice info Zach. I find the lifestyle design comes first and then the business systems are definitely built around it. Helps keep me directed when i need to make important decisions. Thanks for sharing.
Hey Zach, great post man!
Sometimes I get stuck in the old mindeset of feeling guilty if I'm not training 8-10 clients a day, but need a reminder that life is too short and we got into this business to do it on our terms!
Thanks bro!
Awesome post Zach. I gotta stop working on weekends, CRAP!
3) Breakfast with my Wife & Kids — A VERY BIG one for me!
My entire day is energized when I set my children off with a strong breakfast (eggs and fish oil mmmm…).
Great post Z & Chris
Hey Chris, thanks for hitting Zach up for this post.
Zach – all your points are true and honest. I especially love that you are about "paying it forward." We all have to start from somewhere and need help along the way. Those who give back are the ones remembered and respected.
Thanks for wanting the best out of all of us.
Zach,
You are a no BS dude. I can only hope that I have the same successes you have. I wish I knew what you did step by step to get where you are.
great post!
hey Zach
Thanks for this great awesome post on how you live by your own rules.
Awesome video! Thank you both for reminding me what is most important in my life too.
Dale, damn bro, BEST post ever!!?? Chris is gonna be jelaous!!! ha ha
Thanks, bruddah!
@Greg – it's tough dude, BUT, if you leverage the organization and trian 5 – 10 dudes at a time, we don't need the 8 hrs a day gig
I go 3 – 4 hrs a day, and we try to get 10 dudes in at a time
The atmosphere is always better in groups!
Lifestyle Design, bruddah!!!
@Robert
ONLY time I work weekends is if I am holding my USC cert
AND…. it used to be saturday AND sunday, I changed it to friday and saturday to make sure I have ALL day sunday with the family.
We hit the beach or take a day trip and I feel like a good Dad when I do this
ALSO, even better, I know I am NOT keeping others from family
F**K it, they call a sick day on friday if they still work for others
–z–
@karate – focus on giving your clients best service ever tied in with your lifestyle design, it is VERY doable, sometimes it means saying NO or turning down opportunities
@Dr. George – The synergistic businesses can multiply your income 5 fold!!! NO joke
AND, hells eya, why not have FUN doing what we love, others get pissed off but WE understand that is how life works best!
Zach-
Thanks so much for being a leader, innovator, motivator and pioneer!
As usual this is pure manna! What I love about your writing is that even though you serve the exact opposite clientele (I run women's bootcamps) the principals are the same and I learn from you everytime you open your mouth and an Fbomb comes out
You da man!
Monty
