The New Age Of Craigslist – 5 Things You Must Know

A Fitness Marketing Guest Post By Zach Hunt

Hey, there, hope you’re having a great day.

I have something pretty cool ninja Craigslist strategies to share with you..

I’ve heard from a lot of trainers lately that “Craigslist Is Dead” or not near as productive / worthwhile as it used to be.

  • In a way this is true (if you don’t know the ninja secrets I’m about to share)
  • In a way it’ not true (in fact even better then it used to be if you know these techniques)

Check it out…

One of my competitors posted this on Craislist later last year. This was when Craigslist was about as easy as tying your shoe. You could post several ads daily from the same account.

Best part was, that wasn’t even half the ads for my Biz that were posted during that time…

You may have read my 9 Aggressive Craigslist Marketing Tactics (Part 1 AND Part 2). Where I shared exactly how aggressive my Craigslist tactics were when this post when up. Although I have to admit I do love the subject of that post:

“Boot Camp is as retarded as Zach”

…that really made my day, And just one of many ads people posted on craigslist trying to take hits at me. But I just take it as a compliment.

So here’s the lowdown. Craigslist these days is getting more aggressive on it’s side about taking down so called “spammers” on their site. Personally, I wouldn’t go as far as what we do is “spam”. We just share our message more often then most people do on Craigslist.

Basically what this means is that, you can’t just use one account to post multiple ads daily anymore. In fact you can’t even use 3 or 5 accounts unless you’re posting only minimal number of posts weekly.

To make things worse, Craigslist will keep track of the following and often ban accounts if any of the following are found similar between posts:

  • URL’s or domains used in the post (also for image click-through’s)
  • IP Address of computer used to post the account (kinda hard to fake)
  • Similar wording in the post (any type of similar lingo, words, phrases or bylines)
  • Phone numbers used in the post
  • Image hosting in the post (where the image is hosted) – often craigslist will ban an entire image hosting site from allowing ads if you’ve used on of yours too much.
  • Same account used to post more then 1 ad every 48 hours

Some of these might be a little technical, but have no fear, they’re actually all pretty easy to get around when you know the stuff..

In essence, Craigslist is mean, dirty and tough. Yes. But this is actually good news. Cause most of your competitors and other low-level spammers that make it harder for visitors to see your ads will be filtered out. Meaning your ads will show up bolder and brighter then before.

Keep in mind if you’re only posting a few ads weekly or even several, these may not apply to you as much. This is only for aggressive Craigslist marketing, meaning 6-12 ads DAILY in multiple categories 5-7 days weekly. So sometimes upwards of 80+ ads weekly.

Continuing with the good news, each of the above limitations can be gotten around with ease if you just know how. Here’s the simple list of what you should do..

  1. Use multiple accounts – I mean multiples of multiples, sometimes as high as 48 accounts. Somewhat depending on how many posts you use. You can’t just use your families phones, your phone and a few others to get those. How do you get that many accounts? Search “phone verified accounts” on google and you’ll get a few ideas on how you might do that. It’s super simple to buy pre verified accounts that you can use already with craigslist.
  2. Use a rotating IP address – this might sounds confusing, but again a quick google search for “rotating proxy software” or “rotating ip proxy” will put you in the right direction. It’s pretty easy to post ads and posts through proxies. Meaning the actual request to Craigslist will come from a different IP address then your own computer. Eliminating one more layer of Craigslist protection.
  3. Use multiple URL’s for redirection to your site – the best way I’ve found it to just buy 20 or 30 domains for cheap, some as little as 2.99 yearly. You can then just use these for that year to redirect  to you main site. (Extra hint: you can use .biz, .org and other cheaper domains just fine to forward to your main site)
  4. Only list your phone number in images – since you can’t really click on a phone number like you can a link. There’s no harm in just putting it in the images. The only issue here is you need to know how to host from multiple image sources. Otherwise   will know something is up, so onto the next point.
  5. Host your images on multiple sites / domains - image ads are great, but if you continually use the same host for your images (ie your own website), that will be a sign for account ban. Another solution, use an image hosting site. Not sure which ones work, just go through other CL posts and see where those images are being hosted, you’ll soon find one that’s still being allowed through craigslist. From there make sure you use different image names, different image sizes and different image file sizes. All this might sound confusing. But trust me well worth it to stand out these days.

These 5 hints should really help you out with Craigslist and to avoid being “Ghosted”..

Sometimes The Big C (no I don’t mean Chris) likes to play mean and dirty. Rather then ban your account they’ll make it will appear that your post has been “posted” at least to you, but no others will see that ad. A possible reason why your Craigslist Effectiveness may not be so effective. But use these 5 techniques and you’ll not only avoid ghosting, but also account banning.

Anyway, there’s quite a bit to this when you dive deep into it. But those are the 5 main points that will keep you safe and sound and happy with Craigslist. It’ll make your ads and postings a lot more worthwhile.

Let me know your experience with Craigslist in the comments section.

  1. Currently I have 2 barter clients posting 6 ads each a day from 2 accounts (3 in morning and 3 in evening) haven't had any problems yet but never even thought about the 'ghosting'. Will be checking up on that more regularly. Also never thought or even knew you could have a rotating IP address so if CL in my area starts shutting us I know what I'll have to start with! Thanks Zach

I have to agree with what both Chris & Zach are saying. I've
used craiglist in both major cities & it's a pretty good since it's
free. I have noticed I'm using too much time creating these ads
and I have a hard time with img links to my site. Also I struggle with
the HTML coding. Buy as far as the ad posted competition can't be
mentioned as trainers are still stuck saying the wrong things. "I have xyz
experience & xyz certification blah blah.."

any suggestions on how I can speed this process up?

wow man what timing! I was just about to email you, my assistant said today she was asked to reverify phone numbers today and we weren't allowed back into most of our accounts…brilliant stuff bro, thanks!

  4. Zach,

    Thanks so much.

    Great info.

I am going to send this to my VA.

Benson, I would just a simple image ad where you change the name, size, and dimensions of the ad slightly every few weeks. Then just host them on photo bucket. I believe that is still one craigslist accepts for image hosting.

  6. With Craigslist (CL) I really feel that you have to go HARD or not do it at all.

    .
Not sure about other places in the world, but in Los Angeles it's getting real complex.

    .
Last year I was posting 26x day with Gogopin + Phone Verified Accounts (PVA's). Got me a TON of clients.

    .
However within 3 months all my PVA's were blocked, and CL stopped accepting Gogopin for image hosting.

.Now I need to not only rotate IP's, I also need to make sure these IP's are US-based AND the phone #'s with which my PVA's are verified, need to be US based as well.

    .
I looked into every possible solution the blackhat forums. Tried everything, ranging from autoposting software + hiring 20 individual posters in India + all sorts of PVA suppliers.

    .
The problem is that I can't rotate IP's efficiently since I'm behind a cable modem. And the guys in India can not use US IP's or PVA's since Craigslist will ghost these.

    .
So if you ask me, really the only way to get around everything… like EVERYTHING CL can ever throw at you, is to:

-1- Make 50 unique image ads that don't even look like each other.

-2- Get 50 seperate domains to link to, mask-forward them to a landing page.

-3- If you really want to kill it, get 50 landing pages.

-4- Hire 50 seperate US-people, all with PVA's based on their cellphone, to post once every 48 hours.

-5- Be a total OCD maniac and keep this up for as long as possible :)

    .
I really can't think of anything else – Zach, what do you think?

  7. Benson says:

Right on Zach I really appreciate it.

  8. Zach Hunt says:

Michael, awesome post! That's pretty thorough. Everything you said is spot on. Let me respond to a few specific points you made as well.

As for the IP thing, that is kinda tricky but if you look into it there are IP Rotating solutions, that don't have anything to do with your modem or other. And you can even specify where the IP originates from.

My admin uses a program called "Private Proxies" I believe. And it routinely rotates the IP you post from without changing anything. You can even specify where in the US the IP should originate from.

Although there are several Proxy based solutions where you don't have to rely on hardware configurations or the like to change your proxy..

It gets pretty technical from there. Michael looks like you're on top of it.

Everything else is pretty simple as you mention there. But still a pain to some extent.

But once you get it going it surely works well.

  9. Leah Wynne says:

Wow…I use kijiji instead of craigslist because it's more popular here and they have the same rules basically….I figured out pretty quick to get around the images/accounts BUT….I had no idea just how aggressive you can be…I need to step up my game, I've been posting maybe once a week lol….thanks for the ass-kick

  10. Hi Zach,

You're right – it DOES get very technical at a certain point… so much that I have to draw the line from being a fitness business owner to some sort of software engineer :)

It takes a ton of work, but once you're busting out 25 ads/day you can get some serious leads!

(P.S. from what I recall, private proxies are only good from certain vendors – I remember packetflip being one of them…)

  11. Tye says:

Same as Leah here, I dont post as much as I should, but I will now!
