9 Ways To Cast Off The Curse Of The Anti-Training Business

Hey there … I hope you’re doin great…

The other day I sent out an email titled “The Anti-Training Business” … Anti-Training Business is a phrase I used for being off path from your goals of owning a successful training business, and what you’ll most likely end up with if you’re not careful about a few things.

Like many trainers and training business owners, I’ve often struggled with being off course myself and have had varying degrees of success defeating certain challenges at different periods of my life…

And fortunately over the years I’ve learned a few key things that can make your journey to owning the successful training business of your dreams a much shorter and smoother ride.

After sending out the “Anti-Training Business” email, my customer support was floored with responses from trainers from all around the world for whom the email really seemed to resonate… their responses were things like “That was the exact thing I needed to read right now” … and… “This has helped to change the way I see my entire situation, THANK YOU” … and …  “Perfect timing, I needed this”

We all have things come in life and business that can throw us off track… sometimes it can be a huge “life” things… and other times it’s just the daily little hurdles and obstacles that can get in your way… this blog post is about how to stay on path towards your vision… no matter what kind of rocky roads you may run into along the way

There’s certain things that might throw you off track from anywhere from a little to A LOT during your day…

- A client breaking a big contract for no good reason
- Clients flaking
- Clients payments bouncing and declining
- An upset client
- An injured client
- Money problems
- Relationship problems
- Health issues… being sick, training injuries and so on
- Fear
- Uncertainty
- And about 20 Million other things that are the realities of life and of owning a training business, but have no right to throw us off of our path, unless we LET them… which as humans, we commonly do

I remember one time I found out that a trainer who I knew and liked was trying to steal my clients.. he was flat out soliciting them behind my back to come train with him for a huge discount at new gym he was moving to… they came up to me and told me about it.

At first I was so angry about it, and I mean ANGRY… but after settling down a bit my cooler head prevailed and I got back on course… I didn’t give him another thought after that… because every minute I’m focused on him stealing my clients I’m living in fear and resentment, focused on what I don’t want, in a bad mood and moving in the opposite direction of my goals

And any client who would go with him is a client I didn’t want anyway… that’s what I made it mean it to me at least... and I moved on and kept my attention on the task at hand … No clients went with him by the way… like how I had to throw that in there? ;)

I re-framed, shifted my focus and took action in the direction of my goal of owning a successful training business

It doesn’t matter what your version of success is…

Whether your version of a successful training business is to always be helping at least 20 people in your local area to be in the best shape of their lives… or to help to lower the obesity rate in your community by 1% …or to have 100 clients … or to make $50K a year… or $100K a year or $500K a year … or maybe it’s some version of a lifestyle business… where you work very little hours on your own terms and still make a decent or good or even a GREAT living

We live in world full of stress, fear and uncertainty…

It’s all around us wherever we look…

And everyday it’s nature for some things to go wrong… you know how it goes… little stuff comes up that ticks you off, or stresses you out, or is kind of a pain in the butt to deal with.. that’s just the way life is

I’m calling bullshit on anyone who is all smiles all the time, always says they’re doin great, and has butterfly flying out of their butt… unless of course it’s one of those guys who’ve died for a few minutes like on the operating table or something, seen the light and came back to life with a whole new perspective… in that case I’ll buy the 100% happy attitude 24/7… otherwise it makes my BS Detector go off crazy

As a human being your gonna have seasons… seasons in your days, your years and your life

Good stuff and bad stuff. Good times and bad times. Good moments and bad moments.

… But every day… especially TODAY… .this day you’re in right now… which is the only day we really ever have anyway…

…No matter what hurdles, obstacles, challenges or disappointments you face….

Think about the bigger picture and your mission and keep your eye on the ball

Whether that’s helping 100 people in your local area get into the best shape of their lives, or it’s helping 1,000,000 people across the world to become healthier, happier and more fit.

Or maybe it’s a new house for your family… or a second location… or 25 trainers working under you… maybe it’s a financial goal… I don’t know what it is… but WHATEVER it is….

Keep your eye on the ball and your focus on the task at the hand, the one thing that you can do right now to get you one day closer to your vision

Don’t let an upset client, or relationship problems, or the economy and doom and gloom from the news bum you out, if you let it, that stuff will take your eyes OFF the ball and move you, your focus and your direction AWAY from your goals

Obviously I’m not telling you anything you don’t already know…we all know this and have had our asses kicked by our own minds a few times before, myself no exception. It’s a battle that never ends.

I’m just giving you AND ME a little well needed reminder ( AWARENESS is the first step to improving anything)…

Life is a moment to moment journey, like a raw nerve exposed everyday to the elements …. you never know what’s gonna pop up and when… it’s what makes life so beautiful and fun… but can also make it scary and annoying and frustrating as hell at times

You may wake up with the intentions of the day goin one way… but sometimes the day has other plans for you.

Do you stay centered and focused?

Or do you let the storms of life kick you down and hold you back?

In everyone’s life there are micro and macro problems, and during everyone’s life some straight up intense stuff goes down as well… I’m talking about those big problems that can throw us way off course… like major health problems or loss of love or financial stress…

No one is immune and we’re all seemingly guaranteed our share of small and large problems.

Keeping focused on your goals and doin what it takes to reach them is an ‘in the moment’ adventure, there”s no dress rehearsal for this one… just live unscripted in-the-moment experience… it’s like doin imporv all the time

And sometimes the ride gets weird and you need to adjust your course a little bit

Here’s a few things you can do that will keep you on course…

The 9 Ways To Cast Off The Curse Of The Anti-Training Business

1. Do your best to be present in the moment and keep your focus on the one thing in front of you that you can do now to drive your business forward, giving it your full attention

2. Have clearly defined goals and a vision you are passionate about and have a HUGE reason WHY you want to attain these goals

Review your goals each day, this is your target

3. Visualize your vision as if it were reality each day, think it, feel it, taste it, smell it and feel great about it.

4. Commit to adapting and overcoming and being the proactive creator of your reality, not being reactive and at the mercy of the world… stay strong and committed to your end goal but remain flexible along the journey for unseen circumstances that you will need to overcome

5. Mediate – As of yet this is not something I’ve had much success doin myself for extended periods of time, however, I’ve had friends swear by this practice that it helped them really settle into their purpose, enjoy their work more, have less stress, more focus, more happiness, more intuition and become generally overall more centered and focused on what’s important in life. Many HUGE uber SUCCESSFUL people like Russell Simmons and Howard Stern swear by mediation and have done it everyday for years.

Russel Simmons, along with many others, says it’s one of the biggest reasons for his success ( for him I think the other two biggies were giving and not eating meat )

Mediation helps you to stay more like the calm waters at the bottom of the ocean, no matter how bad the storms of life are on the choppy surface.

The people I know who’ve had the greatest success with mediation have used either TM or Holosync from Centerponte.

6. Avoid stuff like negative people who bring you down, the news and things that fill your head with negative thoughts

7. Stay busy… Goin back to number one – Do your best to be present in the moment and keep your focus on the one thing in front of you that you can do now to drive your business forward, giving it your full attention

8. Don’t let yourself get too hungry or tired – I know, hard if your dieting down or working your butt off to build a business… just do your best to control your blood sugar and hunger and to get as much rest as you can

And here’s a BIGGIE…

9. Re-frame what situations mean to you… kind of like when that trainer was trying to steal my clients, instead of staying bent out of shape about it, I just re-framed the entire situation at the time over to a new frame that served my purpose more accordingly …

The new frame said “Any client who goes with the trainer is a client I don’t want and am actually much better off without, so by trying to steal my clients from me he’s actually doin me a huge favor and cleaning house for me”

Do this stuff and you’ll have a much easier time staying on course for your goals

Just remember….  Have goals and do your best to stay in the moment focused on the one thing you can be doing right now to best reach those goals.

Stay committed to your path and if anything tries to get in your way just adapt and overcome

Talk soon,

Big Chris

  3. Thanks Chris,
It is easy to get in a negative headspace. Staying positive and focusing on the goal you want to achieve versus what you don't want to have happen will always keep thing moving forward better.

Remember look where you want to go!

Being a brand new business owner on a very tight budget this post has given me a boost of drive and courage to press on and it tells me I am not the only one who runs into some of these problems.Thx Chris

  5. This was much needed today Chris. Having a well thought out goal that you want more than anything has to be your driving force, your definition of success. When you have that picture in your head of what EXACTLY it is you are working toward, and you keep reaching for it, then I pity the fools who try to stop you.

  6. That was tight, homie. gotta keep your eyes on where u wanna go, pick urself UP when some shit hits the fan, stay busy, hustle and make GOOD things happen

When I feel like this I always go and do a free seminar at a wrestling club…. reminds me of where I came from :)

  7. Awesome post, Chris. I can totally relate to a trainer stealing a client. Just this year I found a former trainer's website. As I was looking through it, I saw his testimonials. I looked and there was a client that had quit with me last year. At first I was super pissed. But like you, I sat back and started thinking why this happened. And then I realized that it was time for that client to go at the time she left. If she hadn't left, I wouldn't have been able to use the time that I was training her to build my business. And after having my best year ever this year, I am even more convinced. The good news is that I have a testimonial of her as well. But I have a before and after of her on my website whereas the other trainer doesn't even have a photo. :)

  8. Nice post Chris. I have dealt with some crazy stuff this year. But just forget about it and not waste time on it. Just keep my eyes on my vision.
