UK's Outlaw Trainer Paul Mort Speaks On Success
Thursday, September 22nd, 2011
Why would I fly half way across the world to hang out with a bunch of trainers?!
When my buddy Big Chris asked me if I’d like to be in his ‘mastermind’ group I was like- “No way man, I’m already doing great, why on earth would I spend 15k and travel half way across the frickin world to shoot the shit with a bunch of dudes who just train people”
Ohhhh how wrong I waas!
It was Big Chris McCombs’ of kick back life fame’s weekend and other members of the group included my buddy Jon Le Tocq, the current UK personal trainer of the year, 7 figure Sam AKA- Sam Bakthiar, the video boss Andy Jenkins who runs an 8 figure business, Jay Ferrugia who has a kick ass online business and an awesome gym in New Jersey, Valerie Waters, who trains Ben Affleck, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Garner, Cindy Crawford, J-lo and a whole boat load of other MAJOR celebrities. In fact, I could dedicate a whole blog post just to how awesome the guys in the group are BUT that may bore you… and Morty don’t do boring ![]()
So this blog post is really to tell you about the things that I learnt that weekend and hopefully give you some inspiration to go out and do something extra-ordinary today
A few of the things I was reminded of, others blew my mind! (more…)

A Bootcamp Marketing Guest Post from Alicia Stregar
It’s Alicia (one half of “The Boot Camp Girls”) here. When I got home from Chris’s KBL Jedi Mastermind in Vegas, I was FIRED UP!
Before I left, I had a clear direction of where I wanted to take my business, and was thrilled to be on track with the goals I set for myself…..and THEN ALL OF MY PLANNING WENT TO HELL AFTER THE MASTERMIND.
I completely changed directions, and TRIPLED my income goals for myself (which for me is HUGE and required me to make a lot of changes to my business model.)
So the first thing I wanted to do is explode growth in my boot camp numbers, while STILL being able to over-deliver to our clients and maintain a great relationship with each and every one of them.
Our camp is dialed in on client retention, so creating a true “experience” is REALLY important to my business.
I hardly EVER run our camp at a discounted price….but sometimes you need a good sale to get your undecided prospects off the couch and into your boot camp. (more…)

A Fitness Marketing Guest Post by Forrest Folen
Hey, what’s up guys! My name is Forrest Folen, and my biz partner, Roy Schuhmacher, and I own Fit For Life Solutions in Foster City, CA and operate 2 successful bootcamps in both Foster City and Mountain View – we’re representin’ the Bay Area ya’ll, and we’re incredibly psyched to be here sharing great fitness biz info with YOU!!

Ok, check this out!!
First off, we’re huge fans of Chris. His content, his energy, his products…he’s like a Jedi Master and we’re the Ewoks…so we’re really honored to be featured on his blog.
Today, I’m here to share with you a freakin’ killer ninja-tactic retention system Roy and I have developed that you’ve never heard about before…EVER! We’ve been testing it for the last 8 months and it works insanely well.
This system will help you:
- Build a tribe-like following
- Show massive appreciation to your clients (and your staff of trainers)
- Get and retain members
- Get your members to strive harder for better results
- Keep your attendance higher
- Get your clients to refer more
- Give you a reason to show off your clients and have them say wonderful things about you and your bootcamp!
It’s called The Bootcamp Band-Ranking System

To understand how we developed the system, which we call the “Bootcamp Band-Ranking System”, it may help to understand that my background is in martial arts. I’ve earned a second degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do. In martial arts, as you well know, exists a ranking system of colored belts. In the style I trained in, there were 10 different belt colors, and as you moved up in the ranks you earned your way to a higher level.
Now, there are many effects, psychologically speaking, that take place as a student moves up in rank. Students feel a sense of accomplishment, they gain confidence, and they gain respect from their peers as they achieve higher rank.
…BUT that’s just the beginning. Ranks of similar color often become very close friends with those who have the same rank, and when people make close friends, they stick around. Also, the instructors could group people by color so now people in the group carry an “elite” feel as they gain higher rank.
…And to top it all off, people with similar experience levels could be challenged accordingly and by group, making the instructors life a lot easier…
Are you starting to see the power of this?
Yes, our Band-Ranking System is a bad-ass, ninja style retention system. It works like crazy to keep your clients motivated and striving for that next level, and it keeps them in your program, never wanting to leave.
The problem we ran into was, how can we give people a colored rank without giving them a belt?
Should we give out colored dog-tags? NO… How about a colored T-shirt? Mmmm, too expensive… I know!! What about those silicone bracelets like Lance Armstrong uses? BINGO!
It was the perfect solution. It could be worn anywhere. We could print our company name (or website) on them. People like them. They were sporty and fashionable. They were a good conversation piece.
After we figured out what we would use, we went into action. The way we work it is once every few weeks we have everyone sit down after the workout, and we take about 15 minutes to call 5-8 people up to get their new rank.
Basically it’s a promotion ceremony…and it works great for building MASSIVE APPRECIATION AND RETENTION!

Let the appreciation party begin!
Once their name is called, they come up to the front with you, usually with a huge grin across their face, as everybody claps for them. Then, we ask them a question, usually something like “What has bootcamp done for you?” or “Why do you keep coming back to bootcamp?” or maybe “What have you learned about yourself through your bootcamp training?”.
This sets you up to look really, really good. Your peeps are going to say all kinds of great things about you and your bootcamp, and you’ll reply with “Wow, thanks! I didn’t even pay her to say this!” and everyone will laugh…fun times! ; )
You may want to keep a friend or staff members close by with a video camera that can pick up good audio. (That was our mistake. We were taking footage, but the audio wasn’t that great…oh well, live and learn. Also, from now on we plan to do a group photo of the promoted clients and post it on our blog, Facebook, etc.)
WARNING: You will seriously get A FLOOD of great testimonials from the promotion ceremony! BE PREPARED!
After they’ve addressed the group, you then want to change to a more serious tone. This is important because you don’t want to come across “cheeseball”. This is where you talk about that person, and how they’re really appreciated in bootcamp, and how they’ve shown strong commitment and perseverance, and you can mention anything they’ve accomplished.
Don’t talk too long. Make it short, sincere, and sweet. Give them their new colored band, and then have everyone clap for them as they return to their seat.
With clients that have lost weight or bodyfat, this is your chance to let people know. Ask them directly “How much weight have you lost, Suzy?” She’ll say something like, “I lost 20 lbs and I owe it all to YOU and this awesome bootcamp!” (Then everyone claps and the people still on intro programs will be sitting there thinking, “Man, I need to sign up for this TODAY!!!”)
There’s a certain way that we do this with with new people, and as people move up, there’s certain ways to say things that really help bring home the appreciation factor…but you get the basics of it…
NOTE – You can do this for your staff of trainers, too! It’s a great way to keep them feeling appreciated, too!
…Of course, after the end of the rank promotion ceremony you’ve just set up a perfect situation for closing sales. After all, you’ve just rained down a series of live testimonials and the people on intro programs have no band…all they have to do to get their first “white band” is to make a commitment to their health by signing on with YOUR BOOTCAMP.
Here’s where you say, “Thanks everyone for coming out tonight, as you know we are currently running promotions, so our camp is going to be filling up really fast (or you can say it’s almost completely filled up depending on how busy you are). We have 3 spots left today, and I’m not sure when we can open this up again. If you’re currently on one of our intro programs, please see me before you go home today so you can secure your spot. THIS WILL BE GONE BY TONIGHT, SO IF YOU WANT IN, MAKE SURE YOU SEE ME. Thanks everyone, we’ll see you next class!”
If you’ve had anyone on the fence, believe me, this will put them over it!
…And believe me, some people get so crazed about this, all they can do is visualize in their head about getting awarded that band. Just the other day I was sitting down with a husband and wife going over prices, and they were kinda sitting on the fence about signing up. Then the wife said, “If we sign up now, will we get a band, too?”
After I said yes, they signed up on the spot! Can you believe the band was the turning point in the sale? It wasn’t their health, it wasn’t a discount in price, it wasn’t their weight. These were all factors, but the turning point in the sale came down to a little plastic band!! I know, right? I thought that was crazy, too…but it worked!!
…And that’s how our “Bootcamp Band-Ranking System” works! I’ve included a PDF on the colored wrist-bands and what each band rank means.
Click Here To Download The PDF Explaining What Each Band Means
We’re getting this down to a science, so hopefully Chris can show us how to turn this into an info product and we can sell it to you guys as a full retention system for 27 bucks later on! LOL!

We’ll be sure to make videos and include a full training system on how to implement it then, but for now, feel free to use it however you feel works for you and KEEP THOSE CLIENTS PAYING, STAYING AND REFERRING!
I’m Forrest, thanks for letting me share this with you! …and don’t forget to friend me on Facebook, thanks!
