According to Webster's Dictionary the definition of a team is "a group on the same side, as in a game" and "a group organized to work together."
I guess most people know what a team is, and honestly these definitions are kind of lame. I love the word team though- it brings me back to my days as an athlete. Team was everything; especially in college because you were truly stuck with those people whether you liked it or not.
When I played college basketball we always had to come back to campus before the other students during winter break because we'd have practices and games. The dorms were not open, just the senior apartments, so when I was a freshman and sophomore we had to bunk up in the upperclassmen apartments, like 5 of us to a bedroom or something crazy like that.
It sucked, a lot, because we were sore and tired from 3 hour practices twice a day and we had to go sleep on the floor. And we probably got into a little scrap with our teammate on the practice floor and we had to go hang out with them all day because we had nowhere else to go. After this break we were so sick of each other and a little bit sick of basketball as well because all we did was play, eat and sleep.
But in the end you know what happened?
Everyone went to battle for each other. It's a weird thing, this teammate bond, but it's true.
It's so hard to put into words if you have never experienced it but it's the coolest thing ever. Especially in women's sports because we all know that women can be a little "testy."
One day you hate each other and the next day you are scooping that person up off the floor when they fall, pushing them past their limits when they are tired, celebrating in incredible victories together, and crying in heartbreaking defeats.

Hey there, hope you're doing awesome…
As you probably know Bedros Keuilian's Fitness Business Summit 2010 is just around the corner.
More successful fitness entrepreneurs and trainers attend The Summit each year than any other event in our industry's history.
It's fun, loaded with the most up to date cutting-edge strategies to help you build your fitness business, and it's hands down the #1 event in the world where you can network with other business minded fitness entrepreneurs… almost all the top guys are there.
In fact, if you make it to just one event this year, this is the one… trainers will flying in from all over the globe just to be there… and for good reason…
Trainers who go to The Fitness Business Summit become more and more successful every year. ( There are countless success stories and case studies of trainers who've gone to past Fitness Businesses Summit's and ended up growing their training businesses to high a six-figures and many times seven-figures over the course of the next 12 months.)
Now the opposite is true as well, trainers who DON'T go to The Fitness Business Summit will earn pretty much the same income year after year, and when the economy is bad, usually so is their business… they just don't have the skills and strategies to succeed.
So for success minded fitness entrepreneurs like yourself, going to to The Summit is a no-brainer… no matter how far you have to travel… if you want to succeed in your fitness business, go.
Just in case you have any questions… here's eleven reasons why you don't wanna miss Bedros Keuilian' Fitness Business Summit this year…

What is up my friends! I hope you are having an amazing time growing your business.
I literally came up with this idea when I saw a Pepsi commercial for the Jabbawockeez
It just freaking dawned on me that these guys have built a business that was born out of their MTV's America's Best Dance Crew championship and they have evolved that into an actual entertainment business…. that can be duplicated and self sustainable without ever having to do another break dancing move ever again.
I remember I came down to Vegas one time for a bachelor party (for their amazing shows and family entertainment of course) and I was talking to one of my club promoter friends and she told me that the Jabbawockeez were charging XS nightclub (at the Wynn) $20,000 to do a 5 minute dance appearance.
20 G's for a 5 minute performance… WOW!!!

Hey there, I hope you're doing great… first off, I want to thank you for being a reader of my blog… without my readers this blog wouldn't exist… or if it did, the only person reading it would be my mom (=
I get people all the time asking me what I do for a living, and my typical answer is usually close to one or more of these…
"As little as possible"
"I work at home"
"I own a fitness training business"
"I'm an information marketer"
"I'm a blogger"
"I'm an internet marketer"
"I own websites"
"I help fitness trainers make more money and work less hours"
"All the above"
… and those are all truthful… but I guess it doesn't explain much… I'll try to use this post to do a better job.
Today I own a few businesses in the fitness industry that generate just under seven figures for me… and fortunately I don't have to spend too much time working, which is cool cuz' lately I've been really focused on spending time with my family ( Sarah and myself our expecting our third child right now BTW) … and I've also been spending a lot of time focused on lifting and on my spiritual path.
Work is important, but for me it needs to be part of my balanced life… I don't want to spend my day just putting in my 8 hours like somehow the majority of the world agreed to do.
I never liked spending my day at a typical day job… it seemed I was…

Hey there, hope you're doing awesome… here's a list things I either learned from my good friend Bedros Keuilian… or through watching how he lived this stuff, it took my understanding to a deeper level…
( BTW, I'd love to hear in the comment section below some of the things you've learned from Bedros… or some of the ways he's helped you build your fitness business )
1. Spend your time doing only the 5% of tasks that are most important to getting you to where you want to go

2. When getting a tattoo, make sure you get one that closely resembles the signature tattoo of one of the highest ranking and most violent prison gangs in the country

By now most trainers know that the real way to get ahead in the industry is to do either group training or boot camps… since there's just not a lot of money in one-on-one private personal training, unless of course 80 hour work weeks are something you're into.
Well, recently I've had a lot of questions from trainers about how they can transition their current clients from private to group training… here's a few tips…
1. Make your group training about 20%-25% less than your private training prices, so if you normally charge $60 for private sessions, charge an average of $45-$49 for your group workouts ( this is PER PERSON for groups of 4-6 people, for boot camps make your prices around 30%-50% of your private session prices)

2. Position group training as the "best" kind of training around, you can touch on points like how much more fun the workouts are, the camaraderie of the groups, how the energy lifts everyone up, the competitiveness which makes it hard to slack off, how they'll have more flexibility in their scheduling and how they'll be able to train with their friends if they want to.

I just got home from my latest fitness business mastermind meeting down in Tampa, Florida, and we had a HUGE breakthrough meeting.
During our Friday morning session, I locked the members in a room and didn't let them leave until we had planned out a 12-month step-by-step guide for:
- Every product launch
- Every affiliate promotion
- And every traffic building strategy we could think of
It was the most powerful meeting we've ever had.
And I also gave out a few tips that I can pass along to bootcamp owners…they are plain and simple, yet powerfully effective.
Here are are the top 10 need to do this week to move your website business along…

Hey there… hope you're doin great… kickin ass… gettin' people into shape… and finding some time to chill here and there… I LOVE chillin'… in fact, one of my favorite ways to chill is to kick back on the couch, watch some TV and write a blog post ( like I'm doing right now) … tonight it's Sons of Anarchy… love that damn show… the Sopranos on Harley's
In this post I wanna talk about some of my favorite no-cost and low-cost ways to make more money in your fitness training business… now keep in mind, before delving into these ideas I want to make it clear that I don't know of one successful business owner… be it in fitness or otherwise.. who doesn't invest in their business on a regular basis.
If you're not willing to put something in, you probably won't get much out… but I understand some new trainers don't have much ( if any ) money to invest at first… I know I didn't… so at first my investments were minimal and I used a lot of these low-cost/no-cost techniques… and then after the money started rolling in I was able to re-invest more and more into my business… as long as the ROI is there… invstmenting money into your business is a no-brainer… but sometimes it's nice to make money without spending any
So here ya go…

Hey, it's Chris here, hope your boot camp or personal training business is KILLING IT right now… I got lot's of great stuff in this blog post for ya today… like…
1. I'm announcing the winners of the Market Annihilator 2.0 Contest
2. A short video that can literally double your fitness profits if you just put it into action… and it hardly takes any time at all
3. Lot's of other cool stuff
Ya know…. I LOVE this industry we're in
I took my bike into the Harley store yesterday to get some new ape hangers put on it ( those are my new apes on the right when I was pulling up at home from the Harley shop, my wife has no idea why I want bars that big, and when I tell her cuz' it's friggin' BAD ASS she just looks at me like I have no idea what the hell I'm talking about)
Well it turns out the kid Anthony who sold me my bike a while back is now a personal trainer building his own little part time business, and he's TOTALLY passionate about helping other people… he still works at Harley and he's training people in the weekends.
And then I got an email from a dude name Larry Lonis I was good friends with about 10 years ago… but haven't heard from him since… Larry and me were full time bouncers together… we used to throw drunks out of bars together in Lubbock Texas ( Larry's a BIG dude, 6'8" and 280 lean… plus he's got more black belts than I can count and competes at a professional level in martial arts all over the world)...
When me and Larry decided someone had to go from the bar… they WENT… we got into quite a few scraps together and had a helluva lot of fun… not a person in the world I'd rather have on my side then Larry when the shiznit when down…. I've seen Larry handle four dudes better than most guys handle one.
Here's Larry by the way… he always has that "Whadda you looking at?" expression on his face… but he's a helluva guy and loves helping people…

Anyhow, somehow he found this blog and contacted me… today he's actually running boot camps out in Dallas Texas… and just like Anthony… is pumped up about all the people he's helping
I love seeing so many GOOD people gettin' into the fitness training industry… it's BY FAR one of the coolest industry's in the world… and by has some of worlds coolest people in the world working at the heart of it.
Ok, enough about Larry and my new ape hangers… now for the other goodies…

Hey there… hope you're doin' awesome… I just go back from a killer upper body workout… lot's of heavy pushing and pullin' … LOVE IT
This post covers some common questions I get from trainers…
You see, in my coaching programs I get some GREAT questions from my students… below I've posted small chunks and pieces of a few recent answers here to some questions you might have regarding your own business
( If you're a coaching client of mine, you might notice one of your questions and answers in here… I took out specifics to protect your identity)
Most of these answers have been shortened for the purpose of this blog post
Question # 1 - If I'm just starting out, have a limited marketing budget, what's the best way to build my client base FAST?
Spread the Word!
Hey there, hope you're awesome
First us all, it's official, the doors are back open on my 10K Coaching Program … and the spots are filling up fast… you can learn more about it here
Now secondly, I'm curious as to whether or not you work from "to do" list… it's amazing to find out that most trainers DON'T use "to-do" list … and then they wonder why they never get anything done to drive their business forward
It's basic, but it's soooooooo important…
If you don't fill the time with important things to get you from where you are now to where you want to go, life will fill that time with meaningless little tasks that won't really get you anywhere nor will they help you make more money. Like check out this kid…

You need to fill your schedule with the important 5% "high-lever" tasks that will get you from where you are now to where you want to go… I even have a side to-do list of tasks I'm gonna put my assistant on that day.
Here's what a typical days to-do list will look like for me…

I'm gonna tell you the first things you need to do if you want to become a fitness information marketer… but first, I wanna tell you why info marketing is probably the coolest gig in the world.
What I mean by "info marketing" is having your own line of information products… like fitness videos and dvd's, audio programs, ebooks, books, manuals and membership sites and stuff ( like my buddy Vinnie's stuff over in the picture on the right)
I don't know one info marketer who would trade it for anything in the world… seriously… being an info marketer kicks ass
Here's just a few of the reasons it's so damn awesome…
1. You get paid for what you know… people will actually PAY YOU for your information
2. You create an info-product once and you get paid over and over… you don't need to show up anywhere at anytime… you don't need an alarm clock… you don't get paid by the hour… you just create the product, set up the cart, drive the traffic and let it sell itself over and over
3. There's more free time in info-marketing than any other gig in the world… seriously, you probably know I used to be a pretty successful marijuana trafficker ( back when it was illegal like everywhere except Holland pretty much)…
I had a TON of freedom when I was in that business ( except after I got popped and served some time) … well the freedom of being a drug trafficker doesn't even come close to that of being an info-marketer… you work where you want, when you want and as little or much as you want ( and what's crazy is… creating these products is super quick and easy… often times just taking a few hours)

I started my personal training business oh, about seven years ago ( give or take)
Very few people thought I would make it
At the time… I looked more like a skinhead than a trainer ( I'm not a skinhead by any means) … I just kinda looked like one ( shaved head, goatee)
I had VERY little "people skills" ( thank God for Dale Carnegie)
Did horrible in school and pretty much stopped going in the eleventh grade
I lived with my mom ( 32 years old living with Mom… good times… I am eternally grateful though… thanks Mom! … btw, my Mom reads every last one of my posts and is KickBackLife.com's biggest fan)
I had NO idea how to get clients
I had two, and they'd paid cash by the week
I refused to dress in "workout clothes" ( they look good on some people, I just don't like em' on me… even when I'm ripped)
I was pretty obnoxious ( I'm a line crosser and have a habit of offending)
I didn't like all the "standing-on-a-swiss-ball-with-one-foot-trying-to-touch-your-nose-with-your-finger-while_activating-your-core-functional-type-training" that was SUPER popular among trainers in many of the big gyms at the time ( I liked Dead, Squat, Push, Pull… still do)
I could have cared less about certifications… I did read a helluva lot of books and other stuff on training though (Zatsiorsky, Siff, Poliquin, Thibaudeau… to name a few)
If you lined-up twenty trainers I looked the last one who would be a trainer ( even though I was in decent shape when I started my biz) - I just didn't look the part
On the surface it looked like the odds were against me
HOWEVER, I did one thing that made all the difference in the world… ( Well, I did become friends with Steve Hochman which was HUGE, but that wouldn't have mattered without this second ingredient)

Hey there, hope you're having a kick ass day
Just got back with Bedros from Mike Koenigs "Paid for Life" event where we were getting footage for our documentary about internet marketing… at the event Mike raised over 300k for his wife Vivian's charity Just Like My Child … a charity which alleviates the suffering of women, children and families in rural Uganda.
Lot's of great speakers at the event… Eben Pagan, John Assaraf, John Carlton, Russell Brunson… just to name a few… these speakers gave of their energy and time all to help a good cause, donating the proceeds of their "back of the room" sales all to charity… it say's a lot about internet marketing community.
Mike is way cool… he brought us up and screened an extremely early version of our trailer to the audience and they ate it up… which rocked… felt great to hear all the applauds.
Alright check it out… this post is gonna be short and sweet and SIMPLE
Basically, here's a few phrases that can DRAMATICALLY increase your income…

Hey there… hope you're doin' awesome… all's great here… this post has some great fitness business building tips
Been hitting the weights pretty hard lately after a 3 year lay-off
In the last month I gained 15 pounds but lost 4 inches in my stomach ( went from 327 up to 342 but I'm definitely quite a bit leaner… I'll have a six pack at around 250lbs or 260lbs… guns are 20.5 inches and already have some veins poppin' out in them)… I'm stiff-legged deadlifting 375lbs for eight, shrugging 475lbs for fifteen EASY and strict bent-over barbell rowing 275lbs for ten… no bounce at all… not the kind of big weights I used to hit, but I've only been back a month and hell, I almost 40… thank God for muscle memory, it looks like all those years I focused on powerlifting weren't wasted after all
I think my hernia popped out again though.. the little f*cker… had it fixed surgically around 3 years ago… and not that thing is back dammit… but I'll deal with that down the road
This post is about what I would if I were to start my personal training business today from scratch knowing what I know now… these are pretty much the things I did do.. some just took a few years to figure out… so this time I'd do em' much earlier in the game
Right now it's 1:18pm on a weekday and I just got to work… what does today consist of?

Hey there… it's Chris, hope you're good… I want to thank you if you left a comment for me on this post the other day… lot's of great feedback on what I should do to get back into killer shape… thank you so much and I wanna let you know I've been hitting the workouts hard and eating super clean… I've been out of the game for a few years now and it feels great to be back into it.
Ok, now check it out… it AMAZES me how poor of a retention rate a lot of trainers and boot camp instructors have… it seems clients leave quicker then they come in… if this sounds like you.. OR if you have a pretty good client retention rate but would like to improve it… then you're definitely gonna wanna read the rest of this post… especially tip # 7… which may be straight up evil… but it works like crazy.

A client who stays for one month is typically worth about $150-$600 for most trainers… but a client who stays for two years is worth an average of $3600 - $14,400 … PLUS they're a lot more likely to refer people… so in the end they're WORTH way more then the client who only trains for a month or two.
Here are some ways you can DRAMATICALLY increase client retention rates…

If you want to skip years and years of trial and error (and costly mistakes) and get the inside scoop on what really works for systems, delegation and living that Kickback Life you really want, check out the KickBack Lifestyle Club. This month Chris is giving you the royal feast with his super secret Sales Script and conversion process that he uses with all his trainers to close near 100% of clients, check it out here.
Recently I was talking with Mitch Lee about some of the dumb things he and I had done over the years in our business…and what we do now instead.
We were talking about some real royal winner mistakes and some just plain dumb no-brainer ones. Like Mitch shares in the interview how not making a simple call could have cost him hundreds of thousands of dollars in the long run.
So we decided to record this and share it here on KickBackLife.
Check out this super cool interview I did with a fellow KickBackLife reader Mitchell "Fast Talker" Lee about the just plain dumb things he and I and I'm sure many other have done as their training career progressed.
Some of the things we go over in this are:
- How long should a workout or session be and who determines this
- The big mistake in selling training programs and how to make your closing process 10 times easier
- How to eliminate pretty near all your billing problems with this simple trick (as long as you start with this now)
- Plus a bunch of other cool stuff (Mitch really spills the beans on this call)

Hey there… it's Chris
It's pretty sad but most personal trainers and boot camp instructors fail and are broke ( or barely getting by)
Here's some of the biggest reasons why…
1. Don't take enough action
2. Don't take the right actions
3. Don't learn marketing, sales and good business building philosophies
4. Don't have clear and defined written goals
5. Not enough focus on helping others
6. Works "in" the business all the time and rarley "on" the business
7. Not willing to do whtever it takes
8. Not good enough social skills ( read "How to Win Friends and Influence People"to remedy this one)
9. Too much focus on trying to impress people with certifications and using big "impressive" words when speaking with clients
10. Trying to do brand based marketing
11. Not being in charge of own marketing… letting someone else run all the marketing

Hey there, it's Chris… hope things are going awesome for you… things have been crazy around here…pretty friggin crazy
Myself and Bedros and our awesome wives were at Frank Kerns 37th birthday party last night at his secret head quarters on the beach… Frank is cool as hell… there's was about 20 of us there including Frank himself, John Reese, Jason Moffatt, Bob Serling, Dr. Mike Woo-Ming, Joe Polish, Matt Trainer and a bunch of other heavy hitters… I love hanging with other high level marketers and business minds… especially when everyone ( but me) has a beer in their hand…
Also…
Spoke at the Fast Track to Fitness Millions event last weekend…

… and me ( 6'6" 320lbs) and Jimmy Smith ( 6'6" 237lbs) and AJ Roberts (290lbs and ninth strongest dude in the world… the dude squats over 1000 pounds and bench presses over 740) and my wife Sarah all packed into Jimmy's girlfriends little Jetta to go get some pancakes and Eggs Benedict at a local diner at around midnight… here we are packed in like sardines and making the little car bottom out over every bump…

Hey what's up?… hope you're doing awesome and hope you've been enjoying all the blog posts myself and my guest posters have been creating for you.

Alright, let's jump in…
Everything is going stellar with the documentary I'm making … Add To Cart…
…the other day I interviewed Gary Vaynerchuk out in Jersey and the dude killed it as always…
The dudes business does 50 Million a year, and after talking to him it's easy to see why… he's all about building your brand equity and creating your legacy… Zach Even-esh was cool enough to drive me over to his office.

Life's been pretty crazy around here… but I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world… internet marketers are a rare breed… true renegades for the most part, just my kind (=
And I've ALWAYS wanted to be a film maker… feels pretty good to be out doing it.

Since I started this blog a year and a half ago the thing has really taken off… it currently has about a 72k three month Alexa… has provided me with seven additional streams of income on top of my personal training business… given me the freedom to go off and make a documentary… and it's allowed me to connect with some pretty awesome people.
People literally race to read the new posts… it's pretty trippy… and I have to say blogging has become one of my favorite things to do in the whole world.
I want to give you a short list of some of my favorite all time posts here on Kick Back Life… mostly older posts that totally rocked… but I wrote them before this blog had such a big following so you may of may not be familiar with em…

Sometimes you just need to get back to basics
Recently I spoke at the Fitness Business Summit and had a chance to work with a ton of fitness experts one-on-one on their fitness businesses… and it was a little weird to see first hand just how many fitness pros are focused on all the wrong things… and these were the top guys and gals and real go-getters in the industry… luckily they were in the right place where myself and my friends Vince DelMonte, Steve Hochman and Bedros "Crusher" Keuilian could help set them straight a little… but there's only so much you can do in five minutes standing in the hallway at a big event like that trying to answer someones question in 2 or 3 or 5 minutes when really most of them were asking questions that need at least 20 minutes to properly address.
But at least they were in the right place and learning from all the awesome speakers… in fact I can't think of a better place in the world for a hungry fitness expert who want to make a lot of money to be at

A lot of times when I'm first working with one of my private coaching clients, they want to tackle 50 things at once, aren't clear on exactly what needs to be done to get to where they want to go and come to me with a pretty discombobulated laundry list of what they THINK needs to get done… but most of the time they're focused on all the wrong stuff… and typically by the end of the first phone call we'll have put together a simple 1, 2, 3 step plan to get them to where they want to go.
But usually what they come to me with ain't pretty
They'll come to me with a "to do" a list of 47 things they've been running around with in their head.. but usually not one of those 47 things is what they need to be doing… I'll give them a new list of say 3, 4 or maybe 5 simple things and we throw the old list in the trash… it wasn't doing them any good anyway. ( Some clients I'll only give one thing at a time to do, and some it might be ten… this depends on many factors… but the average is 3 SIMPLE things at a time)
Often times this saves them years of wasted effort.

Guest Post from Dustin Maher
Hey it's Chris here… here's a guest post by fellow fitness professional Dustin Maher about finding personal trainers and boot camp instructors to actually do the training for you. Personally I'm a HUGE fan of getting other people to do most of my work for me… for example my personal training business is outsourced to 15 personal trainers ( going up in the Kick Back LifeStyle Club this month is a video where I show you step-by-step EXACTLY how I quickly and easily find high quality trainers to work for me… it's only a buck to check it out for the first month… and you can check it out here)
I met Dustin last week at the Fitness Business Summit where I did a little presentation on blogging, held a closed door meeting for Market Annihilator members and worked one-on-one with many of my private coaching clients… awesome to be able to see how much money some of these guys are making now after joining.
It's funny, when they joined my coaching program their problems were "how can I get more clients" and "how can I make more money"… but NOW their problems are more like "how can I pay less taxes on all the money I'm making" and "how can I hire more trainers quickly and easily?"… quality problems in my opinion… there's ALWAYS gonna be problems in life… might as well have quality ones
Ok, back to the guest post from Dustin… If you need to hire some trainers to work under you, check this out…
One of the biggest challenges for bootcamp and personal trainer studio owners is finding the right trainers to train clients and instruct classes.
I hear all the time, How can I find a qualified trainer? This is such a great question, because as you know, it is the trainer or instructor that is in the trenches and has a HUGE influence on the experience and results your clients receive.
About 18 months ago I was pondering this question. My businesses were exploding and I was nearing the burnout/overwhelmed point. I am sure many of you have been there at some point. I couldn't teach anymore class or train more groups. I knew I needed additional help, but was initially concerned about how I would find a qualified trainer and the cost associated with paying that trainer for his/her time. One day it CLICKED with me, and I created a system that sends me qualified trainers and instructors to me for free!
I want to preface this by saying that this may not work with everyone around the world depending on their geographical location, but I hope it opens up your mind to other possibilities.

Right Now I'm a few thousand feet in the air flying back from an Internet marketing Seminar in Atlanta, Georgia… one of my biggest strategies for growing my personal training business was learning everything I could about marketing a business… and marketing seminars is one of the main places I learn this stuff at.
While I'm A HUGE fan of he seminars, I'm NOT a huge fan of flying… and every time I do it I'm pretty sure I've got about a 50/50 chance of making it out alive.
Plus, since I'm like 6'6" 300 pounds and first class was all sold old.. well.. let's just say it makes for a fun flying experience for myself and my poor wife sitting next to me… not only am I taking up my whole seat, but I'm taking up a third of the aisle and half her seat as well…
I have a good marketing book with me that I'm about to tear into… but first I want to give you a quick take away from some thoughts I had that the event inspired in me and tell you about a few of my favorite time management strategies you can use while growing your personal training business…
While the event kicked ass, there was one dude who KILLED IT on stage… it was Perry Belcher and he talked about using Social Media to grow your business. Now I can't talk about exactly what was said, because this was a private event and people pay like 10k a year to go… however I can talk about some thoughts Perry inspired in me.
( Here's me and Perry… the dude knows how to give one hell of a presentation filled with stories, laughs and GREAT "how to" info)

My thoughts… If you drive people from Social Media to your blog and your offering free stuff on your blog for an opt-in, make sure it's really good free stuff… because people are sick and tired of giving over their name and email for some useless, low end free report.

( Props to Perry for the pic)
If you're offering something for free, just make sure it has value, cuz at the end of the day we all know it's really not free, people are trading their email for it… so make sure you give them something really good in exchange.
And definitely don't drive people from social media to hard sell squeeze pages., drive them to a site that allows you to build a relationship first, before you start trying to shove a bunch of stuff down their throat (I'll admit… I've been guilty of the throat shoving)
Now, that's about all I'm gonna be able to say without pissing off a bunch of really cool people who ran he event.
If you're like me you probably love what you do…whether it's personal training, running boot camps, or being an info marketer… you probably love it and feel like it's what you were born to do… but sometimes we end up sacrificing too much to make our vision in to a reality.

Right now I'm chilling out in my home office listening to the late great John Coltrane. The maids are in the rest of the house cleaning away so my wife can spend time with the our two little girls Abby and Emma without having to worry about trying to keep the house clean by herself all the time.
This morning on my hike through the woods right next to our house I was thinking about all the successful fitness business owners, consulting clients of mine and internet marketers I know.
When I use the word "success" here I'm talking about having a business that is not only financially thriving and netting the owner six or seven figures a year, but owning a business that also allows the the business owner to have a lot of freedom…
…being able to work when, where and how many hours they want.
That's my definition of success for the sake of this blog post.
Fortunately I've been focused this last few years on putting other like-minded successful entrepreneurs in my life who have values similar as my own.
Guys who are real renegades… who live by their own rules… who aren't afraid to speak their mind… who make an impact on the world… creating something great… who own businesses that are built around their life and not the other way around.
There are some hard and fast rules these guys live by and things they have in common
I would say these are five of the biggest…

I was hangin' out at a biker bar the other night and a gnarly fight broke out in the parking lot. I think it was over a female (usually is). This big dude just starting beatin' the hell out of this smaller guy, now he wasn't a little guy, but he was definitely smaller than the guy who was beatin the hell out of him… and I think the big dude doin' the beatin' must have been friends with the bouncers cuz they weren't doin' anything to break it up.
The cool thing about the fight was the that even though the smaller guy was gettin' his a** kicked, he kept bouncin' right back up, I mean NOTHING the bigger guy did could keep him down. Knuckle sandwich after knuckle sandwich this dude kept takin' it, and bouncing right back… until FINALLY the big dude just gave up and said "You ain't worth it"… and ya know what the smaller guy did, he just laughed at him, blood all over his face he just friggin' laughed at the big dude who delivered him the beating.

After the fight I was riding my Harley home I was thinking about what a metaphor for life and business that is. The ones who succeed are the ones who won't stay down no matter what kind of beating they receive.
And that got me thinking about a few points might wanna considers when you building your own personal training business (I do some of my best thinking when I'm out riding my bike on the open road). They're ideas, tips, strategies and principles I used when building my own business.
(This list is far from complete and feel free to add some ideas, tips and tricks that work for you in your own personal training business in the comment section at the bottom of this post.)
Alright, let's get to it, here are a few things you'll want to keep in mind when building your own personal training business…

Recently I asked my buddy Rocco Castellano how he was able to get a whole bunch of beauty contestants as clients. Here's what Rocco told me:
They got a hold of me because of the publicity that I generated — it was like the opportunities just keep coming. And what happened was I was able — like I said, I became, I hate the word "famous," but I kind of got exposed or I became famous for being able to drop weight very, very quickly on people and also to create symmetry.
But the publicity that I was getting got the attention of the executive director for Miss Ohio and Miss Michigan in the USA pageant system. And so she came into my gym one day and asked me if I would be the official trainer for the Miss Ohio and Miss Michigan pageant. And I told her absolutely not. You have to be fucking kidding me. There's no way that I'm going to train these little pains in the asses, these little prima donnas. I have better things to do than babysit these little spoiled brats…

I just interviewed Dave Soucy about how to build a fitness a business around your life, and not the other way around… Dave's an amazing guy…
A few years back Dave had a high paying corporate job-type-job ( ughhh ) …. While it did make him a lot of money, it also caused him a lot of stress. After Dave took a few years off, he applied his business know-how towards building a few successful fitness businesses.
Today Dave runs a boot camp twelve hours a week, has a few info product and affiliate marketing businesses that just kinda spit money out of his computer at him, and Dave gets to spend the rest of his time…

There is a lot of money in this industry to be made in the personal training industry. Unfortunately, very few personal trainers really tap in to the abundance of money that people are willing to just hand over to them in exchange for help them getting into shape.
I liken building a successful personal training business to pulling a bank heist.
Almost every guy I know wants to be part of a bank heist, and when I was personal training almost everyone I know wanted my job… now it seems most personal trainers I know want my current job, which is basically owning a business and working part time hours when I want and where I want… but that's a whole different subject for another day.
If you think about it, there really are some deeper parallels between personal training and pulling a bank job.

A lot of trainers have been wondering about how the economy will impact the personal training industry.
My answer to that is that it's only going to effect you as much as you allow it to effect you. If you're diligent in your marketing and you market to the affluent, people who really don't worry about the economy, the gas price is too much, then your business should be fine.
In fact, if you market your business properly it should continue grow, no matter what the economic climate.
I know my business keeps growing and I know lots of trainers whose businesses are growing during this time when a lot of people are worried about the economy, worried about gas and worried about going broke and having th get a regular job.

Recently, I read on a popular personal training business forum site question from one of the users. The question was something like this: "My trainers don't seem to be any good at going out there and getting clients. How can I motivate them to go out there and get more clients so I can make more money?"
My answer to that question is simple. If your trainers are good at "going out there and getting clients", then they sure as hell wouldn't be working for you. They would more likely be your competition and not your employees. Your job is to set up the marketing systems and set up the sales and conversion systems that bring in the prospects and converts them into clients.
My answer to that question is simple…

In most personal training businesses there are some common problems and frustrations that most of us run into once we reach a level of moderate success. These are like our rights of passage and how we deal with them determines not only how successful we'll be but how much we'll enjoy our career. And I don't know about you, but I don't care how much money I make if I don't enjoy what I'm doin' it ain't worth it… period.
To achieve any level of success in life there's gonna be hurdles, problems and disappointments. Accepting this fact is the first part of overcoming these little conundrums as they pop up, and believe me they pop up, especially as you become more and more successful.
One of my favorite authors Eckhart Tolle says that life is "One damned thing after another" I keep this on sticky note on my desk so I don't get too irked every time time one of these damn things pops up. Sometime I have a low "irk factor" so some constant reminding helps.
I'm just going to go through these real quickly…

One thing I find myself constantly knockin' my damn head against the wall over is all the little things I try in business that don't work out. I'd say 4 out of 5 new business and marketing systems for my personal training that I try just don't bring back any positive results in terms of R.O.I.
That's why I have to keep reminding myself that whenever I try a new business or personal training marketing system or approach that it's just a test. If I try it, and it doesn't pan out the way I expect it too, I can either continue using it the way I am (horrible option), I can tweak it a little to see if there's another way to get it to work OR I can quit using that system or campaign altogether and chalk it up as a test result.
If it didn't work out it's not actually a failure, it's just something that I learned through TESTING isn't gonna work the way I tried it with my current business model.

As human beings, we all naturally crave attention.
I remember early one morning; I was training two women in their mid-twenties.
One of them starts to show me some bruises on her shoulder that she got because her boyfriend had beat her up over the weekend. Kind of sad, it's now 5 years later and I bet she's still with the guy.
As soon as she starts telling me this sad story, the other one jumps in about how she is a porn star and specializes in lesbian and medical fetish porn, and starts telling me all about her career, the highlights of it, the horrors of it, the nasty things she had to do to get where she's at. the name of her website and how she's been doing S&M films as well but hopes to break out of that niche because she doesn't want to get typecast.
Keep in mind I had no idea this client of mine did porn until that moment, she was a loan officer as far as I knew. She did show up drunk to a few workouts and I had to send her on her way, but as far as I was concerned, she was a good old stereotypical Orange County alcoholic loan officer.
While she's telling me about the ups and downs of her porn career, the first girl is telling me how bad she has it getting beat up by her boyfriend all the time and how she always has bruises and is scared to call the cops on him because if she does, she'll pay for it.

Have you ever been to an in-demand doctor, psychologist, dentist, or lawyer?
Have you noticed that they are only taking appointments for certain hours of the week?
I bet you made sure that you'll put yourself in to one of the hours they had available, didn't you?
You never complain about how you wished they were open more hours; you just took what they had left because you know that they're in demand and they're good at what they do.
If doctors, dentists, and lawyers can be rigid about their schedule, then why can't a personal trainer too?
It amazes me how many personal trainers I know will take appointments just about any time during the week, and their schedule ends up being all over the place. This strategy doesn't allow a lot of time for focusing on the big lever like marketing your personal training business.

Patrick, what do you do?
I kind of do a number of things. I am first and foremost a fitness professional myself. I own a personal training company with two locations in central Kentucky. I own a health club in central Kentucky as well, and a juice bar within a separate health club. So that’s the first component of my business. The second component is I’m a consultant essentially for anyone in the fitness industry, but primarily focusing on marketing personal training businesses and creating profit centers within health clubs. So I work with fitness professional and club owners alike to essentially help people build the personal training, weight management, profit center side of their business.

A little bit about my background is, I started, you know, came from poverty, and by the age of twenty-five became a millionaire, and now I’m out trying to show the world how to do the same, basically.
CM: Wow! How did you become a millionaire?
DM: You know, Chris, I basically decided that’s what I was going to be and that’s what happened, and it’s as simple as that. A lot of people need to make the decision to become what they want to become, whether it’s have more money, have more time, have better health. A lot of people don’t decide. The minute I decided, it only took me about three years to do.

If a business is composed of a group of people with different responsibilities working towards a single goal, then deciding what people make up that group will be the most important decision you make as a business owner. Here are a few vital tips that will make sure you next hire will be a star employee.
Make Sure You Understand the Job – If one of your employees will be working with the new hire, ask him or her what they would like to see in a candidate before you start interviewing. If you put an ad out for the position, this will help you develop a through list of duties and responsibilities.
Interview Multiple Times - Even if you are in a rush to fill the position, it pays off conduct multiple interviews. It may take longer, but you will waste an even greater amount of time and money if you wind up with a poor fit.

One of the most important questions the health and fitness entrepreneur should ask themselves whenever considering a new project or business venture is "How does this fit into my life?"
Whether you own a health club, a personal training business or you're a mixed martial arts instructor, the main purpose of your business should be to enhance freedom and happiness. It should be a positive addition to your life and not a ball and chain like that girlfriend you had in college who ended up draggin' you down, taking up all your time and basically stalking you when you tried to break it off. ( I had to actually call the cops on one…it was ugly)
The majority of small business owners are slaves to their business and while they might achieve a respectable level of financial success, that success comes at a high cost - long hours, stress, anxiety, suffering relationships and lack of a sense of purpose.

Here are the mistakes most personal trainers and fitness business owners make (I made most of these mistakes myself for years) which keeps them stuck like a hamster in a wheel of 10 hour days, feeling stressed out and overwhelmed, and never being able to get ahead.
Mistake # 1 - Having a business that is owner-dependent
In other words, the first mistake most health club owners, mixed martial arts instructors and personal training business owners make is having a business that is run by the owner and depends upon the owner for the business to function properly. Now, this one is obvious when you think about it and it is taught by many of the top business gurus today.
The problem is, most business owners in the health and fitness industry just don't get it…
In fact, at one time my business was so dependent on me that I couldn't take two weeks off for vacation without seriously feeling it in my pocketbook. And when I would try to take time off, I felt an overwhelming fear that everything was going to fall apart without me…. it was horrible!
I'd spend my whole vacation checking in on my business, peaking at my emails, worrying about losing customers, and going over all the things that could possibly be going wrong.

Chris McCombs (CM): I'm here with Bob Glasgow. Bob, who are you and what do you do?
Bob Glasgow (BG): I'm a CPA and profitability coach and business advisor with Strombeck Consulting in Tampa, FL. And I work with small business owners who want advice from their
CPA. Like my clients, I'm entrepreneurial; in addition to being a CPA in public practice, I work also as a corporate controller in core controller positions in private
industries, so I have a varied background and track record with working with business owners.
Typically I establish a relationship with my clients where we meet on a regular basis, a minimum of four times a year. I encourage my clients to call me on a routine basis.
There's no extra charge for that, I encourage that. And also as part of the relationship I prepare tax returns for the business and for the individual owners. And I do all that
for a fixed annual fee so there's no surprises as to what something is going to cost; it's all upfront.

Chris McCombs (CM): Tom, who are you and what do you do?
Tom Perkins (TP): What I do, Chris, is I call myself a fitness business development coach, or a business development consultant, in the health club and fitness industry. I've been involved with health and fitness probably about 30 years as a consumer, and professionally since about - essentially since about four or five years ago when I went and got certified as a personal trainer and a fitness nutritionist through NESTA, John Spencer Ellis.
Before that I had a five year restaurant with a degree in accounting, had a number of different start-ups outside the industry. So when I went and got certified as a personal trainer I had already taught spinning, tae bo, and bootcamp in the club setting. I was working out with my friends, helping them get in shape and me in shape, and I just wanted to be - my friends recommended to me that I be a personal trainer since I was in the gym four or five days a week at least.
And after about a year of training people, more people started coming up to me locally to help them with building their personal training business. So I started working with fitness professional first, then I moved up to studios and health clubs, and now I'm also working with fitness products companies to help them grow their business from all point of views.

The Business Of Personal Training
Looked at from a business perspective, the road to becoming a successful personal trainer is closer to the path of a professional than it is to that of a tradesperson. The 21st century personal trainer is expected to have, at a minimum, a community college diploma in a two year program covering the fundamentals of diet, exercise, kinetics, anatomy and motivation. Added to what is essentially a medical knowledge base, trainers must be familiar with professional codes of ethics and conduct, salesmanship techniques and small business basics. In the business of personal training, you must be a good business person in order to show what a good personal trainer you are.
Transitioning from the classroom, trainers typically serve the equivalent of an internship at an established facility. The usual business model is for gyms and health clubs to take on graduates from fitness programs as independent contractors who work on a commission basis, often without so much as an hourly minimum wage base income. The facility provides the personal trainer with prospective clients in the form of new members. It is up to the individual trainer to sell his/her services to the members.

Some of the most successful personal trainers in the industry were recently asked to provide their top three tips for growing their business. Each man was proud to share his experiences and tips. Each had taken a different approach to growing his business before becoming a success, so the ideas are mostly different. There are, however, some ideas that were recommended by multiple successful trainers. We are going to take a look at some of the most popular tips from successful personal trainers to grow your fitness business.
You need a killer web site. Make sure that your have good content rich in keywords to get ranked on the search engines. If writing is not one of your better skills, hire a professional writer to take your ideas and put them into words. People tend to look on the internet more than they use the yellow pages to find a business these days, so a good web site is key.
Market your business with articles on the internet. Articles about fitness, your own blog, and press releases are all great ways to get your gym more exposure. These also provide backlinks to your website that can help raise your rank in the search engines. Again, you may want to utilize the skills of a professional writer to fulfill these functions.

Running a personal training business may be the right opportunity for somebody in this go-go Internet age. Start-up costs, after gaining a certification as a trainer, can be low. The hours are pretty much set by you and your clients. Also, you can conduct the actual training at your home, the home of the client or somewhere both of you has mutually agreed upon.
The first thing that's necessary to start in this business is to gain a little training and education - and a certificate - as a personal trainer. Many community colleges offer training courses, most of which take no longer than a semester or two to finish. There are also plenty of online training and certification programs, too. You can use most any search engine and type in "personal training" to be taken to a couple of different premier certification programs.

Because you’re reading this article, I’m assuming that you want to learn everything you need to know about the business of personal training. I can help you with that, but I’m sure that it will take some time before I can even teach you everything I know. Even then, you need to spend an entire lifetime learning about this business because it keeps evolving.
Instead, let me put up general bits of useful information for you to get a general picture of how it is to run a personal training business. Let’s begin.
First of all, if you are not dedicated enough to be a personal trainer, then you have no business to be in this business. Real personal trainers are willing to devote their time to help their clients succeed and countless hours trying to keep their business running smoothly and the money flowing.
Dedication to this business also means that you are willing to listen to what your clients have to say. After all, personal training is all about their welfare and they’re hiring you to help them. Truly care about their concerns and stick with them until they reach their fitness goals.
Spread the Word!
If you need advice on how to run a personal training business, then I can easily sum it up for you. Running this kind of business is a combination of what you already have and what you can still acquire through learning. That’s pretty short, I know, but that’s really the sum of the personal training business or any business for that matter.
Now let me explain that further. Let’s begin with the things that you already have. First of all, if you want to be in the personal training business, I would assume that you love health and fitness. Why? Because why would you be in this business in the first place if this isn’t something you care about?
Aside from that, since you love health and fitness, you also love telling people how they can achieve those things themselves – sometimes to the point of being preachy. You truly love helping people stay fit and healthy, and you work hard to help them achieve their fitness goals.
Spread the Word!
You’re a personal trainer who likes working solo because you like to keep your business small. So you probably haven’t considered creating a business plan. After all, only big businesses need that, right? But you know what, a lot of businesses – even small ones – have folded up because they didn’t create a business plan.
You see, business plans aren’t just meant for businesses who need to borrow money or to attract new investors. A business plan is something like the blue print of your entire business. It will put on paper what your vision is for your business, what your business goals are and how you think you can achieve your goals. If you’re really serious about your business, then you must come up with your own business plan.
There isn’t a single format for creating business plans. However, if you want to get started, you can look up templates of business plans online. Or you could also use a software that helps you build your own business plan from scratch.
Spread the Word!
So you’ve set your mind on putting up a personal training business. You know what you want and who you want to help. You already found a perfect location for your gym. You have the equipment and the expertise to make your business succeed.
But here comes the tricky part: naming your personal training business.
It may not occur to you immediately but your business name can make or break your business altogether. For example, you may regret naming it Steel Belles if you’re also looking to attract male clients.
Actually, naming your business or any business for that matter is not an exact science. But let me throw in a few suggestions that you might want to try out.
Spread the Word!
Want to put up your own personal training business? I’m sure you already have a clear idea of what you want to do with it and what your business goals are. But before you take any action, I recommend that you take your time writing a business plan first.
But why a business plan? And doesn’t making it require a lot of work?
Why You Need a Business Plan
If you really are clear about everything related to your business, then all you need to do is type your ideas down and organize it and turn it into a business plan. Because that’s what a business plan basically is: it puts down on paper the things that are related to your business.

My take on how to build a fitness business…
One of the great thing about building a fitness business, or any business for that matter, is that intelligence isn't really necessary for success. Oh, sure if you have a knack for picking up on good opportunities and know when pass on bad opportunities that defiantly helps, but if that's all you have you won't last a month. What you need instead is passion and intensity, and the undying will to succeed.
Here are things that every fitness business owner should know if they hope to see their goals through...
